So you stood out in the freezing cold, wind blowing for over 2.5 hours to film a fire for your subscribers. Wow, you have my respect. Usually someone shows a 5 minute clip and leaves out the good stuff. Thanks LZFD ret

@@THEMAJESTIRIUM1Looking at this tells me this FF's rarely face a configuration of such magnitude. These fires though in an urban area behave like wildfires, they can and do create their own wind and feed the the fire add in the 20+mph winds and your literally in a firestorm. The worst part about it is the wind literally carries the water away from the fire. This is the epitome of fighting with both hands tied behind your back. You can't get out in front of it you can't out flank it and attack from the sides and if you try to fight it from behind you just push it further into populated areas. Once a blase like this gets going all you can do is the best you can to slow it down cause you will not be able to stop it. Especially if it has that much fuel to burn (a paper products mill).

@@davegilbertson4907 I was in Boston awhile ago doing a mutual aid training instruction course with their states OEM in getting surrounding communities upgraded for airport or flight disaster response. We were working closely with the MASSPORT FD who had primary over the airport when a MA call came in for a ten alarm blase. Though it wasn't winter they had a lot of problems getting enough water to the apparatus and feeder lines from.hydrants. That has been a topic of discussion over the last few years om the structural side, some suggesting a two main system one to feed hydrants one to feed structures so pressure and volume aren't impacted during an urban suburban blaze like this the also addressed the frozen hydrant issue but there doesn't seem to be as easy a remedy for that in colder winter states where that is most likely to be an issue of concern.

Granted I've never fought a fire of that magnitude in those weather conditions and I'm sitting in a warm house in a lounge chair better than 10 yrs retired from the fire service but it never fails to astound me when I witness a multiversal or ladder pipe applying a stream and observing 90% of it being blown away and the little water that does happen to fall on the fire turn to steam in the thermal column.

My question is what caused the blaze. I give all the first responders a huge hats off for their bravery and honor. I would do anythin to return to the field, but health conditions stop me from doin that. I'm an ex Verplanck, New York fire fighter. Hats off to all my brothers and sisters who fight fires all across the globe. We're the few brave souls that stared fear in the face and walked through Hell to save lives. @Robert H Cochran It was our tragic fate to be led into disaster by a Band of Lunatics and Criminals! And so died Adolf in his bunker before the Red Army could knock at his door - a lunatic! Before that, it was Hitler who attacked Poland (1939), France (1940), Great Britain ("Operation Sealion", 1940). Last came the attack against the Soviet Union ("Unternehmen Barbarossa", 22.06.1941). We can call ourselves lucky to be part of the Western Hemisphere again - can't we?

Incredible! These guys were fighting an enormous fire under the worst possible conditions...high winds and bitter cold and a maze of ancient industrial buildings that may or may not have contained toxic and flammable substances. To make matters worse, regardless of where they pointed their hoses, the high winds saw that their stream had dissipated before even touching the flames. Forget Superman, Batman and Spiderman...firefighters are society's true superheroes and I honour each and every one of them!

what so impressed me John a little more the half way in hearing you say when you first got there this (4 story structure ) was not involved! I now live in Southern MD say 90 mins south and east of DC. At a guess based on age this had wood and timber floors which aided in the fast passage of this fire. I am glad you were safe and warm. I am amazed your passage was. Stay well as I wait for a follow-up as this was on the news late yesterday. Did not know it was the Marcal Paper plant

As an ex fire chief, I simply cannot fathom how this happened… Number one, Marcal had their own fire brigade that was on duty at the time of the fire. Number 2, this building was fully operational… IE up to code with fire doors, suppression, alarms, standpipes, etc etc. Number 3, only way I could see this happening is if the building was vacant, and the fire had time to build un noticed. Yes it’s windy, yes it’s cold… but the fire started indoors, why was it allowed to spread as fast as it did? I understand the buildings housed paper, pulp, paper dust etc… But an initial surround and drown the first involved building could’ve saved this complex. Their was a complete and utter failure on someone’s part here… Whether it was intended for insurance purposes, who knows…. But in an occupied building, especially in today’s day and age, especially having its own on site fire brigade, this is / was completely unacceptable in my opinion. Buildings that burn like this are usually abandoned, this building was up and running and staffed at the time this happened. Makes no sense it got so out of control, so fast

WELL, I AM NOT TOO SURE BUT IT GOT BAD REALLY FAST AND CONSUMED THE ENTIRE COMPLEX IN A VERY SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME.....THANKS FOR THE COMMENT.....

Could not have happened at a better time with COVID. I have friends that worked in that building and 2 of them were interviewed by police. They conducted over 100 interviews, and the fire was believed to have started in a buildng that had large rolls of paper. But "extensive damage" caused investigators to be unable to determine the cause. Personally, in my opinion, I think thats BS when they say they couldnt figure it out and this 100% had to be for insurance. I could be wrong, but who knows.

@@JohnRendNYCYou and Sean Kelly 1498 raise some very valid points. Add to that they rebuilt in about a year after this fire so how long was the investigation. As someone who performs fire investigations and assessments albeit for wildfires not structural fires I know all to well how the official investigation can be impeded, or pressured by both corporate and political interference. I have written 8 reports on wildfires on the West Coast that were directly caused by a "major regional utility entity" that conflicted and were heavily critical with the NFS CALFIRE State Fire Marshals and County and State OEM's investigations. Even after almost a hundred people lost their lives nothing has changed or been done to stop it from happening again. Most arson/fire investigations are meticulously performed the only time that deviates is when a corporate entity is involved. Then you get a very short timed investigation that details the ignition point but not the cause, nor does it explain the spread of the fire which is always at a rate in direct contradiction with structural preventers and suppression apparatus on site prior to the fire.
