@@CrickDiggersInc For sure, although I wasn't complaining. The frequency of that bark and the acoustics of my room made it sound like it was coming from outside, behind me. I love it when that happens. When it does happen, there's usually someone else in the comments saying the same thing.

i dont know if you guys know this or not but all those junk pieces of pottery and glass can be gathered up and sold as craft pieces, in a box, for good money. people use them in flooring and masonry, and also decor in their craft creations. people use a hammer to break larger pieces into the sizes they need. good to decorate so many things.

You found a very interesting Myers Drug Co Lonaconing, MD (1860s-present) Caspar's Directory of the American Book (1889) mentions Myers & Cripley of Lonaconing MD as far back as 1889 and earlier. According to The Era Druggist's Directories of (1904-1921), Myers Drug Co of Lonaconing MD shows up in the directories. The Myers family shows marriages in Lonaconing as early as 1866. They have a continuous history from the times of Myers & Cripley to Myers Drug Co to Myers Pharmacy there today. Also greatlly involved with the local community and events. How this bottle came into Cumberland, ~could be~ attributed to Harry W Matheney born in Lonaconing, who once worked for Myers & Cripley. Having graduated from the Maryland College of Pharmacy, he then moved to Cumberland, establishing his own West Side Pharmacy in the (1916-1921) WW I era (directories of 1916 and 1921) - and could have marketed their products through his store. So this bottle can span anything of (1890s-1921+) and specifically (1916-1921+). There are no known embossed bottles of Matheney, so having his pharma bottle meds supplied by Myers Drug Co (17 miles away) would be an excellent source of local products.

I wonder if they would occasionally shift the outhouse when it got full or to rank.if so you could tell if one side of hole is older then the other by the age of the bottles.thay would probably only move these once every ten or so years.
@CrickDiggersInc2 жыл бұрын
You are exactly right brother man they did move the building over a new hole every so often sometimes even 20-30 years before moving to another one. Depends on size and depth really. Usually 3-4 privy’s per permission though.

Just back from Town, scouting about. Nothing available, even my late '19-21 spots. Off to Yokohamas tomorrow. Get your sifter! Covington Kentucky? Which was in the news a few years ago. I found my first Akto-Agate teacup from those children's toy tea sets they made in the '30s & '40s. I'd found them broken for years, and found this whole one in a jar at Yokohamas. Yeah, Ii love the Rust Layer! Get a big 'old slot screwdriver or an old carving fork to dig with in the use layer.
@CrickDiggersInc2 жыл бұрын
Never quit looking! We always end up stumbling upon dumps. Sometimes the little homesite dumps can be the best ones. We actually tried the sifter a few times. We haven’t ever gotten anything that we didn’t see first. We however did run the pinpointed over the tailings. Nothing but iron and pieces of mangled copper and brass. We normally get into water up here in the mountains in the winter at about 6 feet. Lots of underground water so we don’t normally bring the sifter anymore.
@tomfrazier11032 жыл бұрын
@@CrickDiggersInc I've done OK with the sifter. I started in the ash dump of a 1935-70 hospital, of the Ewa Plantation Co. I went away with about $8.50 face a 14k working class wedding ring and and a lot odds.

I can't help but wonder if there are some weird things you have found digging under old outhouses? I'm sure the people who used them never dreamed someone would one day be digging them up!
@CrickDiggersInc2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes we find weird things but usually it just tells a story of the family that grew up there. I know if we start finding marbles and doll pieces they most definitely had children. The bones left from soups and meals tell the wealth of the family. We even find tiny bird bones and rat bones in some pits showing the family was very poor and could not afford much. Usually not anything in those privy’s.
@kenijonesESQ2 жыл бұрын
How long does it take you to dig those pits? And how do you know where to dig? New here and hitting subscribe !! cheers from Canada
@CrickDiggersInc2 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the size of the pit. Some of them can be 40 feet deep and take all day into night to dig and fill. Others like the one in the video can be shallow and much easier to dig. In our area 6 foot is a average outhouse. Takes us around 2 hours to dig a 6 footer with bottles in it. The empty ones are much faster

@winifredryan82232 жыл бұрын
Looking at your digging techniques; there’s a reason archaeologists use trowels once they get into the layers where they start finding materials. Smaller and more delicate objects are less likely to be broken with a trowel blade than a spade, and you can feel the objects taking thinner layers of matrix material off. I give you these pointers because you were respectful enough to check in with the landowners before digging, and I will remind you not to dig public lands because of existing laws (they aren’t nice to tangle with). Outhouses contain lots of interesting materials and even the things you don’t find worthwhile if documented could provide scientific data if you contacted a local university.
