I’ve seen this happen dozens of times, but mostly with human fed catfish. Ducks and fish all come in to be fed, and the catfish are enormous and eat ducks too.

In the world of nature, ducks are pretty expendable. Went to a friend's boat every weekend for several weeks in a row. The mother duck started with some number of ducklings, and every week the number went down. In the end, two survived to be close to developing into adult ducks. This was at a marina and I imagine it was a pretty safe place for ducks. There were catfish and striped bass around there though. I know the stripers grabbed ducklings and I imagine the catfish came up sometimes and got them too. Another sight I saw around there was a gaggle of males chasing a female. I suppose they catch them often enough that the breed continues, but that's how they do it. Ducks apparently do not get lovey-dovey.

Its a hard go for baby ducks. Usually maybe 2 or 3 of those will make it to adulthood. They get hammered by bass, pike, and muskie when they are in the water and murdered when they sleep on land at night by raccoons and foxes. Pretty sad.

When I was a kid fishing every sat sun with my dad in various lakes and rivers every once and a while real early in the morning I would see a line of baby ducks following mama with let’s say 6 babies then splash only 5 babies and I noticed that early in the am ducks with babies always clung to the shoreline when it was too steep to just walk on and only got in the water if they absolutely had too and when they did to get around a bush or bigger tree sitting half way on shore they would do it quickly

There's a fish in a particular river here called the murray cod. They're EXTREMELY territorial and will DELIBERATELY DROWN ducks swimming on the surface by pulling them under. If a possum falls off a tree branch and tries to swim to shore, same thing. Fish will kill it. Nit to eat but JUST territorial. They get quite big and live MANY years.
