MASSIVE Board Build Begins

I went from one massive project straight into another. Since finishing up the pallet table, I've been working on my largest board build yet. I'm currently putting together around 2 dozen very custom end grain cutting boards. Six different patterns and ranging in size from 8x11" all the way up to 18x24". There'll be a video on this build once it's all said and done but since it's going to be a few weeks yet, I thought I'd start doing a weekly video to bring you into my shop and show you the weekly progress I make in between the main build videos.

I used a shop vac for sanding for a long time before I splurged on a Festool dust extractor. I definitely recommend installing a bag inside the shop vac; the regular filter and stock seals around the canister won't do nearly enough to hold it all in, and while the vac will capture probably 90% of the sanding dust it'll still leak fine dust all over the place and make a hell of a mess. It was a night and day difference after upgrading to the Festool extractor for sanding and I hope I never have to go back!

I happened upon your channel today and decided to see what type of wood working you do. Wow! You make some really beautiful geometric, mind bending one of a kind cutting boards. I can also tell you are one of those "Go big or Go home" kind of wood workers. 😉 The projects you take on are big and keeps me glued to the monitor. I build cutting boards as well, one tool that I suggest investing in is a drum sander.

Great work. You should consider hiring a helper to tackle the tedious jobs in the shop, like glue up and have them start with your scraps. I think it will help clean up the pile and you can make more boards to sell.

I would make a few more table and “big” projects like that then, get a seat at a home show big pockets looking for amazing projects built by great people, the story and the fact they could follow the build of there table on your channel. They will pay what you need. Just to support you.

Having taken care of my wife's Christmas wish from last year of replacing our cheesy cutting boards that were set into our granite counters with end grain chaos cutting boards.....I bow to your creation of 100 gallons or so of sawdust. I'm glad I built them, they look just fine....but it was not all that clever (some, like yours ARE pretty clever) and I sure got tired of pushing stock through the bandsaw hence to the drum sander. I got seriously better at spreading glue, however. I also made a half dozen boards for friends....it was a nice project...with not much satisfaction from joinery. -Veteran '66-68

Dude, you inspire me. Right now I’m doing end grain etc but fairly plain feeling despite the great variety of woods. I would love to move my skill level up to a patterned board. Which would be easiest to start?

Hi Ryan, congratulations on achieving the 50,000 subscriber mark, (which appears to have grown by 10,000+), already! I have to disagree with your opinion that you could never sell that beautiful butcher block dining table for considerable profit ... you should test out the waters and never sell yourself short (no pun intended). I do have one question, however. I'd always heard that oak did not make for a bacteria-free cutting board due to its open grain. Are you comfortable using the whiskey barrel oak as, indeed, it was once used to house fluids? I applaud your ambition and values. Don't ever compromise your work ethic, to speed your process. I love your work and honest presentation and am obviously among a growing group of like-minded people. Keep going, and you'll keep growing!

Sue, you’re always so kind, thank you. I’m totally OK with using oak in cutting boards. In one of my previous videos, the brick patterned boards, I talk a bit about my opinion on using oak in boards. I think there’s a time stamp in the description that will take you right to it.

What I've learned in the last 2yrs in the hobby is pallets require soooooooo much work to reclaim, you really have to be selective in what projects you use them. They are definitely not suitable for everything. You can make beautiful creations out of them....but, the labor involved to use them for some projects really slows down your progress.

There is a guy "shurap" on you tube who makes blade knives. He doesnt show his face, doesnt talk, just does his job and he has 1.2mil subscribers. His last vid had almost 1 millions views. Less talking... more working. PS. some of shurp's vids have 20 mil hits. Less talking .... more working. If I want to hear talking, I will put TV listening to politicians

@@ryanhawkins Also, if you want my piece of advise, perhaps go to some local good restaurants, donate your cutting boards and create a new content with the restaurant about cooking while using your boards. While promoting both yours and theirs. Just an idea.

And I tell you why... producing cutting boards is mainly a man thing. But if you cross to cooking, then you meet both... a man and a woman.
