Dr. Jack Imhof and Colin McKeown are on a very special trip to explore some back lakes in Northern Ontario in search of massive Brook Trout. They are fishing in a special regulation region west of Elliot Lake, the guests of Blue Fox Camp. From this base camp, they use canoes to explore hidden lakes that hold brook trout from 2 to 7 pounds! To learn more: bluefoxcamp.com

The weather that week was very challenging, but varying tactics was critical at that time of year to catch good fish.

Great episode Jack! Hope to see more of you in the future! What dry fly patterns were you casting in the smaller lakes? Why were they chosen?

Very happy to see you on this episode Jack, first one I've seen with you, great job narrating and you seem like an awesome guy to fish fish with, as well as teaching me a lot in this episode. Colin, your the OG who has always has kicked butt so apologies for not giving you as much priase as Jack in this comment haha. This question may be too broad for a shortish answer so no hard feelings if it's too much to answer. But ironic and super happy to hear you guys explaining what structures to look for on a lake small or large; as well as how a lake typically has about 10-20 full of fish and the rest void of fish. It's ironic because I was just out ony new little drift boat today (called the "mini drifter": great boat if anyone is looking for one), and I started fishing on this side of the lake where the main feeder stream was coming in, about 12-19ft deep, lots of weed growth with channels of deeper pockets, and shoals. And I was hooking some of my best browns left and right, it was epic! I then when over to the other ends of the lake which had much deeper edges off the bank and didn't get a darn thing in those deeper places. We had a very nice wet and snowy winter finally here in Northern California so the water temp was still nice and cold even though it's mid May which can be uncommon around here. I made that build up long, my apologies. Really the question is, should I still target the productive areas I found today later in the year even when the water temps get close to 69/70 or do you think the fish will eventually move to those deeper areas. Thank you!

Or if the water temp gets close to 70 should I just stop fishing overall, I've heard browns are more tolerent too warmer temps but maybe I shouldn't be stressing them still...

Thanks for the kind words Austin. I also hosted a show a year or so ago, fishing Lake Superior for Coaster Brook Trout with another great guy, Mark Melnyk. Check it out on our KZfaq channel. Getting back to your question. A major feeder stream at this time of year is, as you found out, a great place to concentrate hungry trout. Water temperatures in the lake after a long cold winter would be low and the feeder stream would likely bring both warmer water (warmer than about 40F likely) and food washed in by runoff….perfect place for hungry trout at this time of year. Also, the seedbeds and bugs would benefit from the nutrients and suspended food coming in from the stream. I would try the far side of the lake later in the summer when surfaces temperatures warm up and the trout seek the colder water. As to maximum temperatures for browns, they can tolerate 70F and likely up to 78F but at a metabolic cost. I usually suggest folks only fish in the mornings and evenings when water temperatures get above 71 or 72 and not fish at all when they are above 74F. When played in that heat they can appear ok but the lactic acid levels can continue to build after release and often they may die over the evening. You often don’t see the results because scavengers will often get them so you never see the dead fish. Hope I was able to answer your questions. All the best and Tight Lines.
