Yea how is it so powerful?

So, here's how it works. A single locomotive like that usually can't pull 200 cars like that on it's own, even if all empty cars, thats why you will usually see 2 to 4 or even 5 locomotives powering one long train. In today's railroads, locomotives horsepower range from 3,800 to 4,500hp depending on how heavy the train is, usually 2 4,000/4,4000hp locomotives can pull a 100-150 car train without any extra hands (or DPUs, distributed power units) Each locomotive in a train helps out with providing extra power making it enough horsepower to pull such long heavy freight trains with only little to no struggle such as 2 locomotives can be from 8,000hp to 9,000 hp 3 locomotives providing up to 12,000hp, and so on It varies depending on the model. Most common heavy duty models provide 4,400hp to 4,500hp now while some other locomotives provide up to 4,000hp or even a little less These are the ones used for those long heavy ones sometimes you may see a locomotive in the middle or the rear of a train, this is called a DPU, distributed power unit Which is used if a train is heavy/long and needs power evenly distributed throughout the train to make it easier to pull

Also they drive on rails with metal wheels, which ends up being more slippery than walking in oil soaked boots on ice. What that means is it's easy to push/pull all that weight if you have traction (which locomotive has more of than a train car since it's heavier) and when train accumulates an amount of speed it's very easy to keep this speed.

yeah. Traction is very important. They have DC traction motors or AC traction motors, both of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. DC traction for instance is not the greatest at low to medium speed, but does really well at high speeds. AC traction is good for all, but a lil pricy to maintain and fix, but far more reliable than DC. DC locomotives were discontinued and no longer an option to the railroad in 2010 or something i believe.

Actually, loaded coal cars are much heavier that loaded container stack cars. The average loaded coal car weights 100-110 tons, the avg. double stacked container flatcar only 12 tons.
