Occurred on July 03, 2021 / Steamboat Bay, Alaska, USA
After about five years of developing, managing, and guiding at what has become the top kayak fishing lodge in the world- Los Buzos Panama. I had gathered the attention of the Lodge manager at Steamboat Bay, Alaska. He had seen what I did to build the lodge and fishery in Panama and wanted to see if it would be possible to do something similar in Alaska. As far as I knew, there were no official kayak fishing operations in Alaska that had any type of quality kayaks, and I could not find any footage of big game fish landed from kayaks in the area. So I gathered a team and set off with the mission of catching a massive halibut from a kayak and exploring the effectiveness and viability of setting up a kayak fishing division at the lodge. We greatly exceeded all of our expectations by landing this massive 160+ pound halibut on our first day fishing close to the lodge. Most days we even ended up catching more fish than many of the boats on the trip and came to find out that in many cases, it was more effective to fish from the kayaks and ended up with the easy decision of starting a kayak fishing division at a nearby location- Waterfall Resort. The story has made huge waves in the fishing community as one of the largest officially documented halibut landed from a kayak."

Great video! Our California Halibut don't get that big, but I go after them anyway! Be careful out there, I would not do that without people around. That's somewhere you don't want to end up in the drink! Congrats!

Wow! That's crazy. I'm amazed you were able to lift it up onto the boat. What you did was very dangerous. I'm sure you realized that now but you'll need some modifications if you want to continue doing this and keep all your fingers. 1) I would never grab the line like that even with gloves on. I made that mistake with a 51" (64 lb) halibut this summer and the line cut right through my glove (when the fish tried to run) and into the skin, fortunately didn't lose a finger. 2) I'm amazed you were able to pull ~155 lbs up onto your kayak, and was even more amazed when it held still that long for photos without giving you a thrashing. A gaff or harpoon plus club or gun is the only safe way to take a hali that big onto the boat. Then you'd be killing it though - have a way to cut the line instead if you're going to do catch+release. 3) Happy you released it, those big ones are breeders and the meat is tougher anyway.

Hummmm....something doesn't seem quite right here....guide boats I've been on, when they go for halibut they carry harpoons tied to a float...for a good reason: they would never haul a halibut that size straight into the boat...it's too dangerous. The damage/injuries they can cause is very real. Maybe the halibut in Alaska are mellow....I dunno.

They definitely can be dangerous. I found that slowly bringing them into the boat at an angle stresses them out far less than netting them or gaffing them and plopping them onto the deck of a boat.
