Aluminum casting of a Fire Ant nest.
Instagram @Kiefer_Casting 🔥🔥
Imported Red Fire Ants (Solenopsis Invicta) are an invasive ant species in the southern United States. They kill other native/beneficial ant species, endangered ground-nesting birds, and send people to hospitals. These ants are harmful to the ecology of Florida as well as many other southern states.

When I was in kindergarten, we had a fire ant colony in the sand box. I fell down while playing on top of the hill... I'll leave out the details, but the colony was not thrilled, to say the least. So, yes, fire ants are very aggressive and an invasive species. Also, these are pretty awesome to see the behavioral patterns of different ant species and how they work with their colonies.

From what I remember from school (many Moons ago), you heat Aluminum Oxide to the melting point of Aluminum, then shoot a HIGH VOLTAGE electrical current through it (AKA "Frankenstein"), this is why Aluminum Foundry's are always found near power plants (or they used to be).
@keithjurena9319
@keithjurena9319 3 жыл бұрын
Aluminum oxide is dissolved in molten cryolite, a lower melting aluminum compound. Then electricity separates the aluminum from oxygen. Yes, it takes a lot of power. This is the bulk of the value of aluminum.
@Titus-as-the-Roman

@@Titus-as-the-Roman At current ;) normal consumer electric prices, there is about a dollar's worth of electricity in every pound of aluminum. That energy value is preserved which is why aluminum is widely recycled. It takes less than 5% of that energy to remelt and recycle.

@NolansAnthillCastings
@NolansAnthillCastings 3 жыл бұрын
I’m going to leave it. I try to avoid casting near trees so I don’t get these big roots but sometimes I still do. When that happens they’re usually pretty stuck in there since the ants will dig around them. It adds a bit of character to the casting in my opinion.
@sinformant

If you used a long skinny metal tube for a nozzle and stuck it in the ground around the hot casting and injected the water around it while hot, I wonder if the boiling action of the water would loosen it and maybe help uproot it

Came across your channel today, interesting. Have you ever thought about using these new age resins they have out today, thinner than molten Aluminum, can get deeper into the nest, slower to cure which allows it time to do so, and can be mixed to mimic any color, including Aluminum, and it won't burn you.
@suep9445

I think one big problem with trying resin or acrylic is that moisture in the ground will prevent a good casting, screws up curing, clarity, etc.
