All fuel pumps do not need replacing in all 6th generation models. If you have a MKC-A02 version fuel pump, you're fine. If you have MKC-A01 version, check with your dealer as it may need replacing. You can see the fuel pump by removing the seat.

They are not replacing ALL fuel pumps only those that fall into a certain date range. Pumps manufactured in 2017, 2018 and most of 2019 will be replaced. The rest of the pumps will just be inspected to see if pump is within range.

Just a minor correction Scott - the fuel pump is not a centrifugal pump it is a rubber vane positive pressure pump where the shaft is off center in the housing so the vanes compress fuel on one side and pull in fuel on the opposing side. These pumps create approx 60 psi

Reminds me of when the gen 5 wings were recalled for frame welds cracking. My 2003 was on the recall and Honda took care of it and I rode it for 14 years all over the country no issues. I just bought a 2023 Tour DCT on 3-7-24. I went to the Honda website put in the VIN and not under the recall. I called my dealer they confirmed they inspected it and I'm good. So far this gen 6 is amazing!

My 2004 GL1800 still runs like a watch to this day at 90K miles. I no longer ride it due to a stroke last fall, hoping I can sell it to someone who can use it another 20 years and enjoy it as much as I have! The '18 and later Wings do have some serious issues that need addressing.

As the not so proud owner of a new 2023 wing with the 6 speed manual transmission I have a question. If the tranny bolt fails at 70 mph is the rear wheel going to lock solid or is the slipper clutch gonna allow the rear wheel to keep rolling?

I had the fuel pump checked today at the dealer for my 2021 Goldwing. The dealer has to inspect the pump to determine if it is included in the recall. Mine was not. If it was, they would not have let me drive the bike away from the dealership until they replaced the fuel pump, due to federal recall regulations. If it needed to be replaced, they estimated a 10 day +/- repair time. My dealer is in Maryland.

I have a 2023 Goldwing DCT Tour with 3,600 miles. I have noticed an irregularity in the shifting that seems to be getting worse. In Econ mode at operating temperature the bike will shift normally with a smooth "click" from 1st through 5fth gears. When shifting to 6th and 7th gear under moderate acceleration maybe at around 2,000 RPMs the bike will shift differently. Instead of a smooth "click", the shift sounds and feels more like a "squeal" or a more pronounced clash. It sounds much like what I would imagine would precede the UBS transmission issue discussed on this video. I discussed this issue with my local dealership where I bought the motorcycle a year ago. They initially suggested it was an engine lugging issue in Econ mode, which I know is not the case since the shift occurs at higher RPMs. I finally took it into the shop and the shop that would only diagnose this issue if I agreed to pay a one-hour diagnostic fee which I agreed to pay to possibly prevent a catastrophic failure or safety issue of the nature discussed on this video. I also had my sales person personally ride the bike who verified he heard the same sound. The dealer initially said they could not find anything wrong, but would continue to look, and the issue has not been resolved as of this date. My question to other riders is, "have any of you experienced this issue? If so, do you consider it to be normal? I would appreciate hearing from other Goldwing riders in the meantime and will keep you all posted on what Honda has to say about my complaint. I also do not think they should have refused to diagnose the problem unless I agreed to a diagnostic fee for a complaint regarding a new $30K motorcycle.
@ograyenm
@ograyenm 3 ай бұрын
Update - the dealer, in collaboration with Honda corporate, was able to recreate the problem and they believe the transmission issue is caused by a failed shift motor bearing. I do not know if this is the same problem described in the above video identified as a Universal Bearing Support (UBS) bolt failure, or a new issue. A case has been established and they will proceed to tear into the problem to confirm the initial finding and replace one or more shift motor bearings supposedly under warranty. I will continue to update the forum when additional information becomes available.

Make sure you ride a new one before buying. I bought a 2023 a couple months ago and wish I had not. I still ride my’05 a lot more than the new one. I have never seen a more uncomfortable bike….especially the seat. Granted the new one has some good things going for it but they still don’t outweigh the bad. Besides the seat my other major complaints are loss of a gallon of fuel and larger turn radius. Supposedly better fuel economy offsets less gas. In the real world instead of tanking up at 180-200 miles, I now look for fuel around 150 miles.

@@user-qs6hq6cz8c interesting how old gen Wing owners have a harder time with the move to the new gen. Wings. I came from FJR's and it's the perfect move for me now that I'm 64. I rode last gen. Wings and felt they were way too big, almost car like, but the new one feels just right.

@@user-qs6hq6cz8c don’t know why you only get that much , I get 220- 250 miles from a tank, even loaded fully, and I don’t hang about. As far as the riding experience goes the latest model rides the pants off previous models , genuinely puts it more in the sports touring cluster, comfort is personal, don’t have an issue with it. If you criticise the luggage volume that’s measurable and yes it should be better for the size of machine but we make it work, something you wouldn’t have to think about on previous incarnations . The FJR1300 Yamaha also has some failures which can lock up the transmission and back wheel. But apparently it was recalled and fixed by Yamaha. But it's tough to trust any model that has a bad transmission failure from the factory.

And that's the scary thing... there's just no telling what will happen in a failure like this! And the best thing to do as soon as a hint off a problem occurs, is be prepared for a wheel lockup. Keep the straightest line you can, on the best surface you can, slide back sit up and get on the front brake as hard as the physics will allow!! Trying to shift could make things worse, for complex reasons using the rear brake could also be a problem, instinct will probably see most use it but mindfulness of the fact a light touch could initiate a lockup, is important. The concern you have is valid, as your proposed scenario is potentially an outcome we may see. I have no familiarity with this particular model at all, as I have be out of the loop since retiring 16yrs ago.

From what I can see in the photo of the attachment, looks to me like hydrogen embrittlement. Yes, that is a heat treat thing. It's insidious. The bolt can snap just sitting there. More often when being under load. Might last forever. Might pop sitting in the garage. I don't know what it takes to replace this bolt. However, if it were my GW, I'd look to replacing it. I won't claim to be some expert. However, I have dealt with HE.

I'm betting these fuel pumps are made in China or Indonesia. Honda used to be known for quality and reliability. The warranty used to be pretty good on the '01 thru '17 'Wings. The '18 and up warranty is not as good especially on electronics. If failures aren't covered by Honda, they will probably say it was something you did or something you failed to do that caused the failure. Just recently bought some Honda oil filters. China made.

Quick update on my 2019 UK Goldwing Tour fuel pump failure. My bike is fixed and ready to be picked up tomorrow, 2 May 2024. Fuel pump was confirmed as faulty after having a fuel pressure test carried out. Fuel pump has been replaced under their Honda extended Warranty scheme. Honda UK have only issued a recall for fuel pumps on 2020 - 2024 bikes, so my bike would NOT have been included in the recall. Maybe Honda UK are going to release a recall bulletin for 2018 - 2019 bikes too? Will update further once I have the bike back. Ride safe. 👍🏻

UK update. I spoke to the Honda dealer today who is repairing my 2020 registered Goldwing. He informed me that my bike is a 2019 bike and the UK fuel pump recall (announced this week, late April 2024) does NOT cover my bike. The UK recall is for 2020-2024 Goldwings and NOT 2018-2019. I find this strange as the USA recall covers 2018-2024. My dealer also mentioned that the part number of the faulty fuel pump on my bike is also NOT one of the part numbers listed in the recall. This would suggest that there are fuel pumps fitted to 2018/2019 bikes that are not covered under the UK recall, but are also prone to failure as mine has done. Might I suggest this is slightly concerning? “Luckily”, my bike is under the Honda extended warranty, so the fuel pump replacement is covered and should be back on the road next week when a new pump arrives from Belgium, apparently. Hope this helps someone else in the meantime AND prompts a few questions for Honda UK to answer?
@GoldwingDocs
@GoldwingDocs 2 ай бұрын
There are two different recalls. One covers the 2018-2019 bikes, and the other covers the 2020-2024 bikes. Other than the model years covered, the two recalls are identical. No idea why Honda decided to do that, it has caused much confusion. Check the link in the description, both recalls are shown in that topic on the forum.

Just replaced the vacuum actuated fuel petcock on my 2008 Shadow that had a recall on it... who knows when the recall was issued. The original owner didn't know. So he sold it to me when his bike mysteriously wouldn't crank right after just cranking fine. I figured it out though when it started acting flakey on me and would no longer pass fuel through it even when in on position. I looked in the fuel line and it was bone dry and I was like, what the sam hill is this nonsense. If a seller ever asks you if you know how to work on motorcycles, be suspicious. In retrospect, I'm like... aha. I can tell you on my Shadow, I was swearing and cursing at the person who designed the tool box and battery box compartment... a complete bonehead. The worst job ever.

Honda was once the King of reliability. I'm afraid they are going for cheap now. I recently bought some oil filters for my 'Wing . CHINA made. Cheaper for Honda, more profit. Watch closely as Honda does this in increments. China and other CHEAP manufacturers. Quality will not be a priority. Cheap will be. The U.S. made Hondas were the best ever made.

I am in disbelief. On my KZfaq channel, I compared my experiences with my GL 1800 Goldwing with my Yamaha royal star venture which is a 2008 model. I went back to a venture after owning my GL 1800 Goldwing, because I found the Goldwing to be boring., A bit of a gas hog getting only 33 miles per gallon, and. The main reason I got rid of it was because of how extremely difficult, more than any other vehicle I ever owned. It was to do simple maintenance on just about any other motorcycle. Like changing the air cleaner, or upgrading the rear shocks spring, and the fork springs. The forks weren’t a problem, but it took seven hours following the Honda service manual to remove the rear shock to replace the spring and then reinstall the shock. After just those two jobs, which on my royal star venture, was about a 20 minute job to replace both air cleaners on my Venture, and to remove the rear shock, which I did twice now to change the oil in the shock, which was a piece of cake, those jobs changing the air filters, and removing/installing the rear shock, less than two hours on the royal star venture I have, which happens to be my third, Venture since 1986.. as bored as I was, and as concerned as I was about doing any further repairs on the Goldwing, because of how buried everything is in plastic, I always thought it was a perfect motorcycle. I see that in my video on KZfaq, I went back to a venture, but, the goldwing i bought will admit, was perfect, and they are. I did have an issue on my GL 1800 with the four-way flashers sticking on and not being able to get them to turn off which turned out to be such a widespread problem, that even ebay used four-way flasher modules are generally sold out when salvage yards put them on eBay, and used, they cost anywhere from $250-$500. They don’t fail, they just turn on and start flashing , and then you can’t get them to turn off. The button sticks on… but I really don’t consider that an issue to worry about, I just would never use the four-way flashers again on my Goldwing.. Now I have heard of the man who burned out his clutch in his new model of gold wing, because he was practicing slow parking lot maneuvers and burned out the clutch. Honda did replace the first one even though, as everyone knows, a clutch like tires, bulbs, brakes, is a consumable item and not covered under warranty. But Honda did replace his problematic clutch the first time, but not the second time. I have an acquaintance that is a full-blown Goldwing fanatic. He has a large trailer which happens to be as large as a horse trailer, with tools and straps, and lighting inside all Goldwing themed. Now he has been a lifelong gold wing fanatic that pulls his trailer to the Goldwing functions at certain places around the country. I’m sure at this moment he is either at Daytona, 2024. We’re on his way with his Goldwing and his riding buddies Goldwing also. The reason I bring this up is because, he and his riding buddy traded in their 2014 gold wings in on brand new 2018 gold wings as soon as they came out in 2018. After a few months, the wives complained about the lack of space on the backseat and the smaller luggage and not as comfortable as the older Goldwing was. So he and his buddy both traded in their 2018 gold wings, on left over 2017… I don’t know if they had that special transmission that was rumored to have issues. But I know he took a loss but he didn’t care he one of the old style Goldwing and 2017 was the last year for that version which he liked best… I found this out from him when I bought his stock vented windshield off of his 2017 and put it on my GL 1800, because he replaced the stock windshield with a particular aftermarket windshield. He likes a bit more… I really am surprised. Did goldwing buyer?? have a problem with their flagship motorcycle. I was a motorcycle mechanic at three different motorcycle dealers, two of them were Honda dealerships. So I do all my own work, but it is so arduous to work on a Goldwing with all of that plastic, that I just didn’t wanna do that again after changing the suspension and the air cleaner alone which took me five hours to do the first time… by the way, if you put 100,000 miles on A 2014 gold wing or anyone of that generation Goldwing. And you have the dealer do the air cleaner change, that means you would have the air filter changed 10 times in 100,000 miles… that will cost the owner over $6000 just in labor charges to change the air filter 10 times in 100,000 miles.. I have a video on KZfaq of my yellow gold wing, taken apart to get out the air cleaner under my other screen name. But the title of the video is.” goldwing made mouseproof” that is my yellow gold wing in that video that I am showing people how I made my Goldwing mouse proof, because when I opened that machine up to change the air filter, I found that a mouse or mice had decided to move into the air cleaner housing, which is not uncommon.. I had mice bedding inside the air cleaner of my Yamaha RZ 350, I had actual living mice hopping out of my buddies or 100/7 BMW when he pulled into my driveway one day. He lived about 3 miles away, and when he got to my house, the mice had had enough of that motion and noise, so when the bike stopped, the mice hopped out and headed for the hills… I also found a lot of mice debris like tiny nut shells and an actual snake skin inside the air cleaner housing of my SAAB 900S.. so, if I still owned my previous generation Goldwing to the current one, I would suggest to anyone that owns one to Watch that video I have on KZfaq on how to miles proof the air cleaner. Because if they make your motorcycle there, home, they can chew into the wiring. and there is quite a Birdsnest of wiring just above the air cleaner housing on those gold wings.. we’re any of the Goldwing honors who’s engines locked up injured? I have had two transmission lock ups in my life. they are pretty terrifying, because pulling the clutch in does not release the rear wheel to free wheel while you Coast to a stop. Once the transmission locks up, pulling the clutch and will not release that rear wheel to rotate. The clutch is just between the engine and transmission. Anything after the clutch that locks up will lock up the rear wheel and it will stay locked up… On the two lock ups, I had , The rear wheel both times stayed locked until I stopped. On the one machine, an RZ 350., The Skidmore going uphill that I left with the locked rear tire was over 130 feet long. It stayed on the ground all that summer., The bike wanted to come around sideways, but I somehow was able to keep it going straight while the backend was snaking left to right.. both of the machines I had transmission lock ups on were under 400 pounds. I can’t imagine having the rear wheel lock up on a 850 pound motorcycle like a Goldwing… As a matter of fact, I would definitely get rid of any motorcycle that has a history of transmission lock ups, even if my motorcycle wasn’t one of them.. Hey transmission, lock up can be fatal. It is completely different from an engine lock up, because pulling the clutch and will release the rear wheel the rotate.. Is there any word on the final model year for the Goldwing that was announced about six months ago due to eat you emissions standards that the Goldwing cannot meet for the future? I would possibly like to put in my order to have one of the final year Goldwings, Just as an investment

Just think,forty years of building a case against the goldwing! The Venture lost out to the Goldwing 1200 in the 80’s.According to Traxxion Dynamics an air filter with 70000 was still serviceable on the new wing.I’m sure a Honda dealer will allow a 1000 dollar part exchange against a 32000 Wing.The new wing is brilliant get over it!
