I disagree. In SF terminology ships build around siege weapon usually should be classified as Destroyers (it work differently then navy for practical reasons). Cruisers by definition are large ships capable to independent combat, what mean they should have perfect area and point defense. Because they shouldn't rely on linear tactic and fighters. Otherwise I agree that it is quite decent from militaristic SF point of view design.

Not to argue against your point but what do you think about the Halo UNSC ships? Frigates all the way up to carriers have MACannons of varying sizes. But all require the entire ship to face a target. This is generally due to the technological situation that they are within and how the most effective way to take down their enemies shields is by the use of these weapons. Missiles are also used however they are not the main weapon. Used to deal with targets that they may not be able to effectively aim at.

Elrarion for the smaller ships (though calling a ship like the pillar of autumn small is amusing) generally yes,the ship is either built around the gun (as with the forwards unto dawn) or still has to point the entire ship to aim it... EXCEPT... we see that the Infinity has capital ship sized versions of the Onager cannon you use in Reach as "secondary" weaponry on her hull, leading me to think that for larger UNSC ships that can spare the mass and power, perhaps they will carry a few of these turreted MAC's as well as their main spinal mounts. I'd also think that for the ships that are too large to maneuver quickly, like things battleship sized and above, especially carriers, you'd instead spend the mass and power you would on a spinal mount on a whole array of turreted MAC's. Actually, given the presence of the Mini-MAC we see on the Mammoth in H4, it wouldn't surprise me if ALL UNSC ships were mounting at least a few of them, if not prior to 2552 then certainly in post war designs and retrofits. And my opinion on the designs is that they are quite true to what I would expect a civilization that has mastered spaceflight and learned to control gravity would do...though there are canon conflicts over the whole subject of if UNSC ships had artificial gravity pre-2525 or not.. and the designs from that era clearly have no rotating sections for spin gravity, and you wouldn't design a ship that way if you only had spun gravity as well so... Irregardless... whoever designed the UNSC ships clearly was thinking about if such a design would work IRL and so far as I can tell, with assumptions made about things like engine efficiency and what have you, they would.

TheRezro it depends on the size of your navy and your industrial capabilities... and your tech base. Generally if your tech base and industrial base is small you build General designs and use large ship class designation for them... I've seen in sci-fi calling a ship that's 150 meters long a corvette for civilizations that have a large tech base, whilst in other sci-fi, such a ship when build by a smaller civilization would call it a destroyer, for example. And as for cruisers... the designation has become a bit of a catch-all for anything above escort ship class, which usually includes destroyers, but the meaning of destroyer has become... skewed over the decades anyways. I usually designate designs that utilize siege or other oversized weaponry or weapon arrangements as "Cruiser-heavy Railgu " if it is built around a Railgun and depending on its mass and size I may dip down to using destroyer or up to battleship designations. The trick here is when designs are built for things like BB's with oversized engines...then it's time to ressurect ship designations like "Battlecruiser"!

MrGrownman455 Yes, you can, although the way the blocks are in this game tend to encourage players to make bulkier looking ships. But a sufficiently good builder can certainly make sleeker looking ships.

i build a small version of the enterprise from star trek beyond, it doesn't look bulky

stockart whiteman no... No it doesn't and it doesn't land on planets. If this ship gets into a gravity well it's done for. But it has shuttles to land on planets and moons with.

Why it should even do that? Generally there is special class of drop-ships for that, though it depend on setting. In SE as far I recall it is generally hard to land with the larger ship.

Danyal Zhang ...you do realize that galactica is over a kilometer long and 500 meter meters wide (not counting flight pods) and nearly 200 meters tall, right? People have built things that large but it will melt your computer if you try any level of detail work.
