you are correct...remove hunters from the equation and the poachers will take over and decimate the herds which they have repeatedly done across much of Africa. If you want to save elephant herds, the only viable solution is carefully regulated hunting which provides the financial resources to fund anti-poaching efforts and gives locals a reason to keep the great beasts around.

Hi Jerry. What we see in this video is that the hunters carefully selected an old bull from within a healthy population. By culling old bulls that have already contributed more than enough of their genes to the pool, younger bulls get the opportunity to breed and create diversity within the herd. This is what is meant by conservation hunting; it's good in terms of genetic variation and in terms of enhancing food availability for females and calves. Furthermore, the financial input to the community from hunting permits (provided after careful assessment by the local government, don't forget) means that villagers don't have to resort to snaring, trapping or shooting (badly) wildlife (including elephants) themselves to generate income, illegally. The substantial amount of meat from an elephant provides an important feast for the surrounding villages. On occasions, the bulls selected for culling are known to be causing trouble for and coming into conflict with villagers. As they get old, village gardens and crops become a tempting food source for bulls that are beyond their breeding prime of life. So, no one is indiscriminately shooting endangered animals here. The simple truth of this kind of carefully managed hunting is that it works in the interests of all involved and in particular in the interests of the herd's healthy future. Sure, it appears to be unkind for the bull elephant that gets a big bullet through its brain, but put yourself in its shoes. As you approach the end of your successful life, would you rather have your belly ripped open by hyenas and your eyes pecked out by vultures, while you're still breathing? I'll guess that you're not a shooter or a hunter - and that's fine. But please, try to keep your head thinking straight as you take in information and form your views. You might prefer to present yourself as if you were a member of a jury, charged with the responsibility of carefully assessing information. Try also to understand that the reactions you see from the members of the hunting party come from their pride in having completed their hunt successfully, without unintended consequences. The animal is dispatched with skill and respect. This is what hunters strive for. Skillful completion of their task, in all respects. It's not about an ego trip. Hunters who can afford to pay for the licences and the expensive rifles and do the training and travel needed for this activity are not redneck dickheads. They are successful people who take pride in how they conduct themselves within the community. They have respect for others and the animals they hunt. @@MauserM03Blog While i'm not against hunting or culling in order to maintain healthy population on principle, the way these videos are framed there's no pertinent info in these videos or shorts about how they go about selecting the game they hunt. Yes, it's possible they go through all that necessary work, but if there's no indication that's the methodology they used it could just as easily be a randomly selected bull and they could be culling way more than what your analysis implies. If they don't want people to get the wrong impression, it would be nice if they provided more context as to the cost/benefits of a culling and why that individual animal was selected for it in every video. I get what people want is the entertainment factor of the actual hunt but Im not going to consume a video without that info in the context and assume the proper responsibility is being taken behind the scenes, that would require too much trust in people which is hard to come by when there are just as many people hunting and poaching without being responsible about the ecological impact.

@@TheWerttyFiles Thanks for responding Jerry. I agree with you, that some or many of these big game hunting videos are deficient when it comes to explaining the conservation benefits. This particular one did a reasonable job though, considering the information in the description, together with the care taken with the cows and calves, passing over the younger bulls, the images of the meat being harvested for the local villagers and the other bush animals feasting on the left-overs. I'm a hunter (though not of African game) and I do often think just as you do, that a better job could be done to explain the care taken in selecting the oldest males, avoiding pass-through situations where animals in the background might be injured, shot placement for quick kills, etc, etc. I do sometimes think, 'Oh, that's not a great look. People won't understand.' However, I expect that these videos are made for an audience of folk who already know about these things. It might be useful for a hunting guide to make a comprehensive explanation of the ethos behind and benefits of conservation hunting of African game. Concerned viewers could watch this explanatory piece and learn a little about matters they would otherwise never be able to understand. Thank you to you for being open minded with the additional information provided. :-)
