Master John Natividad talks about his sparring sessions with Chuck Norris, and his training methods back in the day. He also talks about his relationship with him.
edit: Grand Master Natividad has now passed away, and I made this video because I was always one of his greatest fans in Karate history. Because of him I wanted to become an amazing teacher and Iw as very fortunate to do this interview with him. his group, with Rob Mancini and Mr. Staples, and his family would always help me with my Journey. I am very glad I got to know them and help me throughout my martial arts career. He also help me produce Team USA and when he was still healthy and young helped me with my classes to help improve our school.
I never knew he lived in my town, when I found out I couldn't believe he actually had a small group in my city. What were the chances? The first time I met him was an AppleBees in Warm Springs in Las Vegas. The one was a walking legend. I am very honored and happy I got to be his photographer and videographer before his passing, and this man contributed so much to my life and the world rather.

Met Chuck Norris one night in Los Angeles when he pulled into my Dad’s gas station. I recognized him as I remember from his Karate commercials. I said “hey, your Chuck Norris the Karate guy”! He said yes and shook my greasy hand. I noticed his gas credit card read Carlos Norris. When he came back to his car I asked him about this and he said “”yes, that’s my real name “! Later I went to his Karate Dojo on Wilshire Blvd where I met one of his younger brothers. Chuck Norris came in and I saw him again. This was in the 70’s. Chuck Norris was a gentleman to me. He was famous at the time for teaching several movie stars Karate. Later I took Karate as I remember near where I lived. Chuck Norris was the real deal! A kind hearted person and a great Karate expert.

Mr. Norris came to Special Training with the SCKA by invitation from Mr. Ohshima in 1965 or ‘66. He became friends with Mr. Ohshima’s senior Black Belt, Caylor Adkins, and Mr. Adkins would take young Black Belts to one of Mr. Norris’ schools (probably Torrance) to spar. I first saw Mr. Norris in 1967 at Jhoon Rhee’s Internationals at Madison Square Garden (he won). And I met him after Ed Parker’s Internationals in Long Beach, CA. I spoke with him briefly and he seemed to me very friendly and polite. He asked if I trained and I told him that I did under Mr. Ohshima. He said that he knew Mr. Ohshima and was complimentary.

Chuck Norris was a competitive martial artist. Bruce Lee, while skilled, was an actor. Bruce's legend grew to superhuman proportions because he died young. If Chuck died and Bruce lived, it would be the opposite. Chuck would be seen as the legendary master who was untouchable. That's just how it goes.

@@fluffylittlebear Bruce Lee is an actor, but he does have a deep understanding for the martial arts. Bruce Lee learned Kung Fu from Ip Man and he was taught by Chuck Norris when they met each other in the United States. Chuck Norris had just won the world karate championship and Bruce Lee was there supporting him. Chuck Norris is a better fighter all in all, but nobody had Bruce Lee's lightning speed and powerful counter attacks. There's no faking what Bruce can do with those nunchucks.

I love Chuck Norris because he was entertaining and the story line was very good. I loved this story. Another thing, I love what he had to say about being positive and of course the training and not giving up. Chuck hitting too hard, that was funny! I never knew about the schools? Am in California? I think it was a good idea to interview Master John Navi Natividad. Guys that many of us might not have heard of but were still key people in the MA world during the "golden age of MA". Time passes us by so fast many are just forgotten. Even the "legends" are eventually forgotten. by the next generation of students. I wonder how many kids studying Karate today know who Chuck Norris is/was. JOe Lewis. ...etc. We live in an odd time ....in MA, Film and music....in that most of the greats have retired or have passed away. And magzines like Black Belt are hard to find on the newstands (at least htey are in Toronto, Canada). 10 years ro so ago you could count on seeing 4 or 5 MA magzines on every newsstand that sold magazines. Supermarkets and book stores. Today not one. So how to todays general get reminded of those guys who made MA what it is today? Accidentally coming across theier KZfaq interviews?? They might even see Chuck & Gina's exercise machine commercial....not knowing that was "Chuck Norris 3x 6x Karate Champion/MA film star"...Just this older looking bearded uy with a beautiful blonde next to him. Not knowing she's his wife. Were in the "dark ages" of MA/film/music IMHO...

I only knew who he was because of I did a sociology report for the generation. Professor gave me a C+ because she had no clue what I was talking about. The report was when the split happen between tournaments between Japanese karate, taekwondo, and American karate. Then I found Natividad. I had no clue he lived in Vegas. Over the years he helped me produced the Olympic karate team I got a gold that year at nationals and my athlete ending up making the team. Whenever he had events I supported him. I asked him for an interview I could tell he was getting weaker I think he knew his time was less and less and I could see it on his face. So I asked as many questions as I could so I could educate the world about his accomplishments.

Listen darlin', Chuck may not have been the greatest, but I guarantee he'd spank that ass of yours. Just sayin'... Even before he met Bruce Lee, Norris was already cross training in multiple arts. In addition to Tang Soo Do-Moo Duk Kwan and judo, he trained with Japanese legends Fumio Demura (shito-ryu), Tsutomu Oshima (shotokan) and Hidetake Nishiyama (shotokan). The Norris schools produced more champions than any other group of that era. Even legends like Bill Wallace have said that if Norris had opted to compete full-contact he would have done well (depending on his chin). Top 10 of all time, perhaps not, but definitely of his era.
