This is great! Really informative and finally someone talking about how to achieve great results on fast moving birds in flight. I’ve seen many videos on this topic, but most of them talk about large and slow birds, this is the best one by far. Looking forward to watching more videos from you Isaac, this one is amazing and the images are absolutely stunning.

Excellent tutorial. Could you please elaborate why NOT to use the Tracking function. In the slide listing settings for SONY camera, Tracking was OFF, but Tracking Sensitivity was set to locked on. Thank you.

Thank you and excellent question. These are 2 separate settings and here is the logic. Purple Menu, Item #1 Priority set in AF-C is locked on. The logic is you are telling the camera to fire when it has achieved focus and not before. As far as tracking or not tracking this is a bit more complicated and is selected when you select the focus area with or without tracking. Essentially the bird eye af is a form of tracking making the tracking function redundant. But there are times in my experience that I think keeping tracking on is actually a hindrance. One such time is if you are photographing a bird near water. If the camera loses the eye and jumps to the water it tends to stay on the water longer if tracking is engaged. If it is not engaged then it will actively be looking for the eye only and will lock back onto the bird faster. I have experienced this many times with ducks flying low over water or as Ospreys dive into the water for a fish. Same with fishing terns and similar birds. Hope that helps. Also I am available for private one on one lessons for anything that you may need help with like setting up the camera, processing, image critique, plans to photograph certain species or anything else. All of the info is available on my website.

I love how this shows how important it is to be able to predict where and when the bird is likely to take flight. Lots of great information here thanks so much!

Great presentation! Thank you very much. I've been trying to photograph a harrier hawk and just haven't been able to get it right. Been using 1/1600, f8 and iso 600. Definitely going to change things up and try again!

thank you so much! I would like to greatly encourage you to increase your shutter speed by quite a bit. Also shoot wide open with whatever lens you are using. Please remember that there is no right setting for all occasions. The lighting conditions and the species you are photographing are what should determine the shutter speed. As you saw in the video there was not one photo that I presented where my shutter speed was that low. Hope that helps and feel free to reach out if you need additional help.

That was great and so useful Isaac. I love. BIF, and the take home for me is to up my shutter speed a bit (1/4000 now to 1/6400+). Info on bird behavior very useful. And background, beautiful. I loved your pics, especially the wing down power stroke!

12:37 : I fully disagree with this; selecting a proper image stabilization algorithm is pretty important. The case 1 is for static shots, and in my experience it tends to lead to poor results when tracking fast birds (with the subject pretty much off-center). Indeed, the IS tries to cancel every movement, including the tracking. When the objective fights the tracking movement, this leads to many small "jumps", and I saw a significant improvement of my shots when I switched to the mode which activates IS only during image acquisition. I never really used the mode which is specifically designed for tracking - if anybody has an opinion on it, I'm interested.
