I am a retired US Marine living in west Texas. A group of us older fellows get together at the Fort Bliss gun range to shoot benchrest on silhouette targets from 100 to 200 meters with 22lr. The wind in the high desert often shifts from 3 to 9 up to 15 mile gusts which can translate to large MOA windage adjustments in either direction depending on the distance. We don't have time to wait for a drop in wind speed due to the way we compete. 4 or 5 guys down the firing line taking turns on knock down targets. You have to bracket the wind with reticle MOA/MILRAD max and min on your target, or swag an estimated shift in inches. If you don't take aerodynamic jump/drop into account you will miss unless you are shooting close range. Right to left winds with a right hand twist barrel jumps the impact up. Left to right winds will drop the impact. We use a near wind indicator, mirage when conditions allow, and a flag at the distance of the targets we shooting. Too much fun and very challenging.

Hello master sniper.Great instruction, interesting to watch . The gear available to troops today has me green with envy. Mid eighties Djbouti East Africa , was fortunate enough to be a part of tireur d'elite ection 13dble. Our instruction on the course was pretty basic in comparison to what the brits do now i would imagine. We never had any fancy gadgets, although essential on today's ranges. The rifle we were given was a well worn frf1 7.5 teamed with a 3.8 scope . Windage was worked out by experience. Adjusting your windage by sound and feel ,no grass or trees . Then oddly enough waiting for the lull ,exhale lift onto your target, release. I honestly believe none of your aids would have worked. too much going on with getting in tune with your rifle, when you have mastered that as the weeks progress it will fall into place .anyhow we had enough crap to carry running up and down hills due to our fuck ups ,surprising how quick you learn . Nice to watch someone you instinctively realise knows his stuff . Thanks again Taff 173 147

Great video. I wish that wind finder was available in the states. Not sure why is not but if made available on gun shops here it would probably sell like hot cakes. However, at close to $120 with shipping and handling through a single store in the UK? Idk, I still think is worth it so I will most likely end up buying it. However, I don't believe most people would be willing to do so, and that is a huge loss of potential for that product. Drop it to $50 and bring it to the US market.

I’m impressed with your suppressor I can hear the action on your rifle that’s what we call in the states Hollywood quiet. Do you take students? I’m a decent shot but as with all things I could always improve. I’m a bit of a perfectionist.

At 3:56 when you demonstrate 3-9 o'clock and 9-3 o'clock you've pointed the wind finder in the opposite directions because the tail actually tells us the direction the wind is going as opposed to the nose telling where the wind is from. I've been really enjoying your video series and that was a beautiful CZ452 Lux 22LR.

Fantastic video ill see if i can get one of those wind finder from some where iv got something like that on the end of my red wolf midnight its a piece of thread on a metal rod so looking down the barrel i get a idea on wind direction, have a nice day Sir

Optics Warehouse good evening Sir just watched the scope set up, well as a novice my self at the min i must be doing something wright as i use sprit levels i have one on my dove tail rail as well as one on my angle indicator which is on the scope, now scope mounts BKL s as these have a good centre balance, ye a word on my scope i got drapers to get mine from optic W house they sad to me why that and not the Nico sterling i sad after watching john at OWH i sad ye that’s the one, wait for it drapers ordered in 2 and guess what they sold both as i bought one the reason i got drapers was they set it up for me so paying a bit more for was was ok however elevation was out wait for it 10MOA, yes you don’t need your eyes tested and its not a spelling problem, so as wee speak i had to take the scope off as i was totally happy with a very bad set up, so novice Jack is on it and doing a far better job ye, I don’t have a torque ranch I’m just taking it easy when tightening up ill print off a set of cross hairs and line up the ridicule and line it up that way o ye have a look at this AAR on air and you will see my red wolf midnight kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qrOJfdeSvJjJpYU.html and to Finnish off another fantastic and spot on set up well it wood be with your military background take it easy

The first wind effects the bullet the least, since it has the highest velocity. I know some people argue the effect being bigger because it the first force the bullet gets as it leaves the "vacuum". But consider this: the bullets trajectory steepens the longer you shoot, because gravity pulls on it and when the bullets velocity starts dropping, it has longer to effect the bullet during the same amount of distance compared to leaving the muzzle. Same with wind: if the wind is constantly blowing from the same direction at the same speed, you will see the bullet start drifting more at closer to the target than near the muzzle. I've gotten excelent results by only looking at the wind close to the target or if there are no good indicators, look for the first indicator that is closest to the target. I dont even own a wind meter because the only place you read wind is the spot where the bullet never flies. Actually the bullet will be in flight 50cm to 1 meter forward from your metering position, since most people meter the wind from their shooting position or behind the rifle.

tiputipu777 It is demonstrably true that the wind at the target has the LEAST effect on the path of a bullet. Getting wind wrong at the shooter essentially magnifies wind deflection error through the trajectory. If you separate the flight path into thirds, mathematically it is getting the first 3rd right which has the highest contribution to hit probability. As range increases the last third becomes increasingly important, but it never overtakes the importance of first or second 3rd of the trajectory (for realistic ranges). A wind meter should only be a guide to gauging and bracketing the wind near the shooter, since that is easily measurable and verifiable. It is true, as you say, that the wind at the target has more time to act on the bullet due to the reduced velocity. What you are discounting is that the drag on the bullet has also decreased. This reduces the drag component due to wind and offsets a portion of the increase due to time exposure. Obviously this is all a textbook exercise and I've yet to shoot in a location where it could be boiled down this simply. In reality it all matters and the geography of your locale is usually the biggest driver of wind effects. I've shot in a places where the max ordinate of the bullet was several hundred feet high over a canyon. At the shooter you might read 5 mph wind but the bullet was easily experiencing 20+ mph wind at max ordinate. In that case, getting the wind right at the shooter or at the target would be meaningless if you didn't get the middle third right.

Wrong..do some test at 15yrds on a windy day tuned gun and proper set scope..then do it on a day with little wind. U will see how much the wind affects right out the barrell.

Very nice sir. The best way to read the wind is to use mirage and the protractor method. I keep 2 clear protractors in my dope book cover for this very reason. What I do is read the mirage angle using my protractor and divide that by 4 and that gives me my windspeed in MPH. Then I plug in my answer to this formula and adjust accordingly. Mirage angle in degrees/4= windpseed in MPH Windspeed in MPH * Distance in hundredths of yards = answer divided by 4 = wind moa.

Is it odd that I have always just kind of done all these calculations in my head? I’ve been shooting since I was 4 years old. I grew up in Alaska. I rarely miss once I have a proper zero. .22 has less of a wind profile but it’s extremely light.

Wind at your position is the most important wind, it creates the largest deflection (especially at this distance) .

@@jamesmurphy7442 nope, the first 1/3 of the 200m distance will account for close to 57% of deflection, last 1/3 will account for 10%, if we increase the distance to 1000m the last 1/3 of the distance or the last 333m will account for only 17% deflection. The effects of the mid range will increase, however the first 1/3 at the distance of 1000m accounts for around 45-47% deflection. Source: Where does wind matter? This is a game of angels, small changes at your position will have the largest effect. At your position wind is the most important as it is the only wind that we can measure with some accuracy. And if we are lucky and the wind at your position is similar to the mid range wind, it is really hard to miss.

This simple device is all very well, but it only acts as an aid at the snipers location. This has no relationship to the effects of windage ‘down range’! The best way to get a one shot kill is to have a number 2 who, through practice and experience can call the wind over the range from sniper to target! Whilst the No. 1 is concentrating on the target, the No. 2 is reading the wind using natural features and experience. Slightly difficult in a desert, but you can still use heat haze!!
