An interesting entry in the Ninja Gaiden franchise with seemingly no connection to the Arcade or NES games of the series, save for the character of Ryu. This game featured a new storyline, new characters, and a more simplistic mission structure in which stages are set up as single chapters, and not subdivided into different acts like the NES games.
The gameplay should feel very comfortable to veterans of the NES trilogy since Ryu retains most of his original moveset and attacks are performed in the same manner. One notable change is that Ryu can't cling to walls in this game, but rather bounds off of them. It helps keep the gameplay fluid, but it can also lead to unavoidable damage in some situations (jumping into an enemy or stage hazard). Ryu also has a "desperation attack" that kills all on-screen enemies, but drains a portion of his health. It's activated by simultaneously pressing Jump and Attack so it's easy to accidentally do the attack and lose health.
Another aspect is the game's generosity with power-ups. You have your standard energy power-ups (white), your Ninpo power-ups (red), and your special attack and score pick-ups. One strange thing is that the Ninpo counter tops at 999 N, but once you reach that number, you seem to have infinite magic (which I tried not to abuse). If you use your Ninpo sparingly, you'll easily reach 999 by the third or fourth stage.
The sound is kind of off-beat and out of sync in some parts because the sound from the original video had some prominent static noise which was really irritating, so I had to make a VGM log and convert to WAV. Even so, it sounds much better than it did. -

The only things I miss and prefer in the NES version are: the graphics here are more colorful and clear, but it doesn't have that 'dark' appeal that the NES versions had, it seems much more cartoonish here. And the original boss music was way better on the NES (in fact, sound in general). but the gameplay looks much better here, more dynamic and balanced (even though there is the Ninpo glitch which is pratically cheating).

This game...See Ghouls and Ghosts on the NES....Then see it on the Sega Master System.. Do the same with Bubble Bobble...Shinobi...DoubleDragon...Complete day vs night!! I am still baffled at the fact that the Sega Master System didn't had the acknowledgement it deserved in the US. The rest of the world knew though that the Master System was far more superior than the NES in all aspects, except the stock gamepads perhaps.

The dirty monopoly policy that nintendo had with the softhouses killed a bit SMS. The hardware comparison was a joke, SMS is much superior in all points, but NES had a library 5 times bigger than SMS because of the dirty monopoly. Think of a castlevania game on this sistem. Sadly the companies supported the wrong console.
@scissorman44

Considering how SEGA shot themselves in the foot in the long run(Nintendo's policies had JACK to do with the Saturn failing) I don't think those companies did the wrong decision by supporting the top dog at the moment(even if the policies were douchey, they DID allow for a quality control that weren't possible before the Console Crash)

SMS is a very underrated console. Had better spec than NES, but due license problems, bad marketing and some bad games in first years it never got the respect it worths. In the end, NES had a way bigger library of great games even if the best SMS games were slightly superior.

Overall a great game, but there are a few spots of epic trash game design with some of the worst enemy placement I have seen in a platformer. The best example of this is the three flames that spawn where you jump at 35:39, there is absolutely no avoiding them unless you use a bomb which takes a chunk out of your life to blow up everything. I died so many times trying to out run these stupid flames and it is 100% not possible. So basically, you HAVE to take damage to get past this part, real great design guys, good one!
