In this bass lesson I’m going to show you that with just 5 simple shapes you can utilise the entire fingerboard… and the best bit… none of these shapes are more than a 4 fret stretch…

Confession: I did this exercise, and I was able to finally start piecing together the entire fretboard as Scott said. It. Really. Works. I started doing the same exercise for the major pentatonic scale as well, and I'm already seeing tremendous improvement. Something about this lesson made a whole bunch of stuff click, so I've learned a lot in the past 3 days!

The best teacher of bass I've found on youtube and its free. I don't see the need to complain about how long it takes him to start the lesson when you're not paying for great lessons.. I find the small adventures and chats at the start interesting either way :)

Love the channel. I’ve been a drummer for over 40 years on a professional level gigs sessions so on . Anyways during covid I lost everything regarding gigs work . So I Bought a bass and started practising 2 to 3 hours every day for two years and watching your channel. I mean by no stretch of the imagination I can play as advanced as you guys but I am having so much fun learning. But I went from being able to play rhythm on the bass to learning where the notes are practising scales and now been able to play a whole set with a new rock band three-piece rock band as a bass player and I’m loving it. Personally watching people like Andy , Chaka bass player he is crazy good , Pino Paladino, Felix Pastorius, all the bass player on here are fantastic. All so Leland Sklar is one of my faves Bob Babet so on. Love the channel. Fantastic vibes.

Same here, drummer for many years and moving on to bass. Learning loads and loads from Scott. Things that just months ago seemed impossible to grasp now easy. I also play piano and compose on it but I'm liking the stringed instrument the best. I can play a bit of 6 string guitar but after playing bass for a while six string is next to impossible and not going to pursue it further. Everything feels so compact and the strings of a guitar feel like little compact tiny hairs! I think bass is it for me and makes me use my drumming skills and theory of music from piano at the same time. Like you I'll be searching out some musicians to play with probably next year. Best wishes.

Hey Scott. I've been a cowboy chord guitar player for 25years who's just learning the bass. In this mornings practice, I put a simple 1, 4 progression on the looper with the intention of really learning the 5 positions on the bass, and I did! What I did not expect was how focusing on the bottom 4 strings unlocked all 6 strings on the guitar up and down the fretboard.The no-reach patterns on strings with consistent intervals was the connective tissue to make CAGED make sense. Thank you SO MUCH. I feel like i'm playing whole new instrument(s)!

I have started watching videos. You are an amazing teacher! One thing I haven't seen yet is how to play even and clean notes without fingerboard noise. If you have ever had to record clean and clear notes are a must. Keep explaining Music Theory it really helps.

Another great one. Thanks. My next place to go from here is how to get better phrasing when playing these patterns. What happens with me with each new scale is I usually just end up playing up and down each note with the same rhythm. Maybe you can give tips to find varying intervals and rhythms that work to get interesting phrases like you play here.

Yeah I have known the notes for years on the fret because I played piano as a kid. But I have never had a consistent system to approach the fretboard. I am very happy to have seen this. I am not a blues player but messing around with the minor pentatonic today I can do what my brain tells me to do without breaking my cognitive capacity. Along with subdivisions which I started practicing from one of your videos. I have seriously leveled up as a player man. Better late than never, thank you Scott. I can now effectively start approaching the minor and major scales, I imagined something like this but now I can do it. Thanks, and I owe you one

I use up one down one for my modes, which I only figured out over the last few years. I’m getting overwhelmed with where to grow next as there is so much I don’t know it’s just where to start. Do you do kind of analysis of bass players as i know I could be so much better with focus. SOS lol

I would love to take advantage and add more arsenal to my groove, I am a full time musician however I’ve been struggling with expanding my mind. How exactly do I sign up and pay for the course? I can’t tell if it’s every gig I play they basically desire the same story but I’m not sure if it’s because I’m stuck with only knowing what I know? Maybe if I stepped up the game I will be able to get that solo on the recording or gig? Anyways as a professional you are the only one I trust with my knowing that you can meet me on my level and know exactly what to do to move me forward. I really am interested in Skype lessons I don’t mind paying the extra bucks its definitely worth it to me. Anyways thanks for the great information!
