So heartwarming to see such wonderful young players take the stage supported by brilliant pianists able to create the orchestra accompaniment. Ray is such an inspiration for everyone I feel his energy, and he communicates in such a way that everyone understands. Yes it is a technical thing to play the violin and you need to be very good to play the notes. But to sell the music you need to understand what it is you are expressing and be able to transition between statements and feelings, be in full control of this (requires total bow control) and PROJECT the music which may be volume dynamics, emotion or simply rhythm but never with a feeling understanding about what you are trying to do. You must project the music not focus just on playing to yourself like Ray beautifully demonstrated.

Nice to see the famous Aussie tall poppy syndrome is still alive in Australia from some of these comments . One of our few world class musicians. Let's hope he's not reading these comments. And if you Ray many Aussies like me are so proud of you.

G-day Ray is a person who has abilty to comunicate no matter where he finds himself that is a trait that alot of younger Australians seem to have that natural abilty when overseas all three of our children who are Aussies through and through even the eldist who was not born here but only ten months old when we came here are very much like him in that regard that is not to take away any of Rays wonderful Talent and his nateral abilty to perform his music and teach I have been lucky enough to observe him up close with a young talented violin artist friend of mine and what he as taught them in the shortn space of time he was with them and I am not a musican myself his approch was insightful for as an avid listener of music it was helpful for me aprecate music more. Ray is a Good Bloke in my Estimation of him 👍 I am writing this on Dec 21 /2023. So to who is silly enough to be reading this Merry Christmas 🎄🫶🕊️☘️❤️

Straight to the heart and soul of musical expression. Ray's masterclass builds deep foundations and technical leverage encouraging and challenging the musicians to greater awareness and insight into performance. Cheeky humour. Recalling the Horse Stance, Rays signature posture? Well done all. What a privilege to be able to watch this online!

Ray just tell this first guy that that the second movement is a love song. He needs to think of someone that his is in love with and all the passion that that entails and tell him to show us love hat passion. Careful not to try to be too funny. It comes across as making fun of him.

I guess I compare everything against Karolina Protsenko especially when she is in her classical mode. She grew from the age of nine as a street performer and so had to please the audience to make a living. She made movement, appearance and audience contact a part of the show. She probably sacrificed the perfect playing position in order to give an entertaining performance. The distinguishing differences I see in her is that she shows passion for the music, she is confident, fearless, she plays to the audience and wants them involved, she brings emotional depth to the piece and she plays with abandon. You can see it on her face and body. When she went through a master class with Ray Chen (video online) you could see the difference in response from her versus these talented folks here. Chen is a good example of that himself. He brings intensity to the piece like no other. I suppose I'm watching this video because of Karolina. By the end of this day, I suspect Karolina will have gotten at least 100,000 views across all the media where she is shown, probably a lot more. It's good for her, it's great for the violin and it's especially great for orchestral music. The description on this video says "Ray Chen is a violinist who redefines what it is to be a classical musician in the 21st Century." I think that's true, if the musicians cooperate and the public can participate in the experience. One thing she proves is that the violin is not only a classical experience it can be just as much or more when played in contemporary music.

As an educator myself, Ray isn't very clear with how he wanted students to play. I don't think he is aware how he approaches music can be easily explained in ways students can interpret. He also needs to understand that students don't have instruments that are capable of producing quality tone.

Wow a world class musician doesn't know the instrument and tool of trade and the tone it produces. That's like saying Lewis Hamilton doesn't know his cars. I like how you preface with as an educator. Maybe it isn't clear to you, because maybe you just aren't good enough to be learning in masterclass

All students were technically very competent. What they need to do to level up is the interpretation and expressiveness, which often have to be thought through with imagery and metaphor. It's like coaching an actor in acting, except through a violin. You will get nowhere going bar by bar, note by note. It's kinda ironic that a educator like yourself don't understand. There are different levels of skills musician and with those level comes different way of how to teach them.

Ray has a hard time instructing people because having them think of a feeling isnt enough. He needs to tell them exactly what to do with the bow and technique. Bow pressure, bow position, angle, position near the bridge, manipulation of the violin, etc.
@hamwhacker
@hamwhacker 6 ай бұрын
Agreed. Varying bow speed and looking after the start and end of phrases exactly how you want them to come across, would be nice for example. And leaving GAPS between notes (silence) is important. Maybe they don’t want to be prescriptive about the violin during a masterclass. These players are already at a very high level. Personally I have some clear ideas how to do it but I am not a teacher and not a professional (only a good amateur). I usually learn ONE technical thing by watching such masterclasses, sometimes by watching the famous soloist or picking up on one thing they give away (a tell) about how to be really good. I understand the point you making...but I have come the conclusion that most brilliant players (who are not teachers) don’t know technically how they got so good, since it took years to achieve and they were instructed by someone else. There is not a single masterclass that I have not enjoyed immensely. I have HUGE admiration for the students, and find it so fulfilling to watch and listen to the engagement between everyone in search for excellence. It is so inspirational.

Ray Chen is an otherworldly player, but doesn’t seem to be a very good teacher. He gave a lot of vague direction while stuttering, and I kinda felt bad for the students trying to incorporate such vagueness into their playing.
@meganwong9508

I don’t know about that. There were moments he did talk about technical aspects but he did emphasize he didn’t want them to be just told how to play the pieces. Rather, to think more in depth and inwards about their playing. I saw it more as an opportunity to become more thoughtful/mature musicians.

@@meganwong9508 to me that's just another way to say it was rather aimless. I think masterclasses aren't the place to ponder. There's a finite time slot for each student and pondering can be done at the student's own leisure during practice sessions. I obviously don't give masterclasses but I think Vengerov is the best masterclass giver ever to exist. He's just so good at communicating to the student and interacting with them. while watching Ray's masterclasses I always am bothered by the feeling that he's trying too hard to present a respectable appearance to the audience and then he stumbles and tries to get across too many ideas in a vague manner, none with a distinct message. And sometimes the small talk with the student sounds really forced and unnecessary, like he's trying to fill in the gaps but it doesn't work well imo. Sometimes he sounds a little condescending to the student too though I know that's not his intention, it just kinda overflows from the pressure of giving a masterclass.

I think it is because Ray is so natural at expressing in his own way without even thinking about it, he probably finds it difficult to explain how others could incorporate "his" ideas

@@irisce2799 Yeah, fair enough. I do think this session was probably a bit more "abstract". As another user mentioned, I think sometimes with great musicians, a lot of things can come quite intuitively but that doesn't always mean it translates to teaching those things well. It's not that he doesn't want to convey those things but to your point, it's more of a question of how do you do it in such a way that is more tangible or understandable for the student. I also wonder if he were to give a masterclass without such a large audience, if it would have been different. It did feel like it was not only for the student but for them (and us as the viewer here) as well, so I can potentially see the approach having to differ as well. Regardless, I think there are still good values/thoughts to take away from these sessions!

Honestly, I couldn't handle Ray's masterclasses, he just says so many confusing things and gives to many speeches in between 😂 privacy man, let the students at least think and try a couple of times. I always reference Noah Bendix-Balgley's masterclasses as comparison. He is sooo super effective and surgically precise with his instructions and recommendations and also has not such a huge ego.
