In this video I took a deep dive on counter melodies with three different examples all across the energy spectrum. I tried my hand at answering the questions of what are counter melodies, why counter melodies matter, and how to make counter melodies. I really do believe a good counter melody is the secret sauce to making your music more memorable, more dynamic, and more professional. This video was inspired by a request I received on my last video, so let me know in the comments if you have any questions or if there's anything you want to see me cover in a future video! Also, let me know which beat was your favorite! Did you like the guitar lofi song? What did you think of my FIRST EVER drill beat? (lmaoo) How about the "almost soul" sample at the end?
Seriously though, thank you guys for all of the support so far, I'm really happy to see that my videos are helping some of you guys out on your own musical journeys. Hit that subscribe button to join this little music making community we're getting started in our own corner of the internet (:

On the Sega Mega Drive, it seems like sometimes the counter melody plays on the SN76489 whilst the main melody plays on the YM2612 so it’s easy to hear what it’s doing and learn from it 😊

Suggestions when you have a lofi piano (chords and melody) and a non-guitar (i.e std vst) and trying to avoid stepping on the main melody? Chords occupy 1 octave, melody another octave means counter would have to be higher or lower than those ideally. If the melody varies in pacing then it makes it difficult to have a different rhythm. Call and response would require the main melody to have gaps to allow for a response.

Great question! A couple of thoughts I can offer (without being able to actually hear the track) are if the main melody has a lot of motion your counter melody should be very simple (think sustained notes with only a few changes, maybe using effects like panning, delay automation, or turning up the portamento to make it more interesting without being too complicated). Also, you don’t necessarily need layers to be in separate octaves, but the closer they are together the “thinner” I would recommend them being. For example: if you have 2 hands of a piano and want a 3rd element in a roughly similar register you can simplify the chords the piano is playing to make space for the counter melody. Instead of the “left hand” playing all 3 or 4 notes in the chord, try having it play only the root and 5th or root and 3rd. Depending what type of rhythm you’re using you can do something similar with the right hand of the piano. That being said, I think you’ll hear me preach simplicity a lot on this channel! Sometimes if you’re having trouble fitting an element into your track it either doesn’t belong, or the other elements are too busy. I’m not at all against having complex elements of a track, but I definitely recommend complementing a complex element with much simpler ones. I hope that was helpful, let me know if you have any other questions!

i just don't understand why do you name chords a main melody, but it's good new youtube channel
@itsmeluked
@itsmeluked Жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s a concept I disagreed with pretty heavily for a while actually, but I find that a lot of producers have been referring to their foundational components as the melody for quite a while and I figured this was intended to be a beginner level explanation anyway. Realistically the definitions can get incredibly nuanced but I think the concepts I talked about here can apply pretty broadly across most types of melody. Thanks for watching!

Another great video, Luke! I have to ask though, could you maybe talk about some of your favorite plugins for a vid? I've been kind of stuck using the same ones for a bit I'm sure your schedule is probably a bit packed with requests, so no pressure haha Also how in the hell are you already at 240 subs, weren't you at 80 like a week ago? Congrats on growing so fast man!

It’s blowing my mind how much support I’ve gotten in the past like 10 days! I’m really glad people are finding these videos helpful, it’s a pretty cool feeling. I’d love to make a video on some of my favorite plugins, but I have to admit I haven’t invested as much as I probably should have by now 😂 so don’t be surprised when you see how many free plugins I’m hawking lol Are you more looking for VSTi’s or Effect plugins? (Or both?) I think it’s going to be a little while before I can make this video but you make a great point: switching up your plugins, samples, instruments, even DAWs is a really good way to keep things fresh and spark some inspiration. Thanks for the suggestion!

@@itsmeluked Yeah i think both VSTs and effects would be great, just to see what i've been missing out on Using LABS libraries like soft piano and the E. Guitars gets kind of boring after a while, at least for me. No problem, thanks for the content!
