Smart move. It's not the same anymore I'm afraid. DIY like Faux News has made everyone an expert.

My boy Brian Lucey is THEE! man when it comes to mastering! He did some mastering work for me a few years ago and it was great! He's a great guy, and will help you out along your project's journey. Look him up when you get to the mastering part of your project.

I don't think I have heard someone talk exactly what has been on my mind for decades. Bryan is brilliant. And the fact that his most memorable lesson was from Robert Fripp, damn.

glad you enjoyed it. what parts were technical to you?
@deadscenedotcom

Well, to me it isn't technical. But as I recall, you delved into specifics in gear and approach. I share a lot of your sensibilities, and I think the interview was instructive for many. I appreciated the insight into the equipment used to soft-clip the input signal during A/D and your openness about standard industry analog mastering practices.

+Brian Lucey They're amazing! but you also have to remember that they get great guest like yourself who help a lot of aspiring engineers to want to some day work in the industry as well. So thank you for the great information! It really does help

My tip for that ... be amazing always. If you are exceeding expectations, over and over, you will succeed. And you will have a good life doing it. Too many people think that shortcuts are fast answers are the way forward, and they are not.

Good show. I think its safe to say we'd all like to see the rules for batters box be more defined tho. It seems to work best when they have to either name a plugin or explain a technique to qualify as an answer. Makes the show/segment that much better.

Hey Brian! Thanks for taking the time. I was talking about the show in general. But now that you ask, 1.) How loaded up is your master bus? Do you use Izotope Ozone on your master? Or do you use seperate plugins/gear to get the same job done? Are there any plugins that you find yourself using for every mix on the master? 2.) Do you honestly think outboard gear is a necessity to compete with the best in the industry? Honestly. Or do you think you could get the job done completely in the box. 3.) Lastly, (kind of tied to the last question) I am currently 100% in the box but i'm starting to get more interested in what outboard gear could do for my mixes. If there was one piece of equipment (under $1,500) what would you suggest i get if im looking to simply give my mixes an analog feel to them? So basically I would like to mix everything in the box but then at the very end maybe run them thru something to give them that vibe/feel. What is that piece? Thanks alot brother, it's much appreciated.

What makes a great mix is skill, vision, musicality and taste. Gear is not the thing. BUT gear is part of the journey for each person to go after what they hear in their head as possible. A regular client Tchad Blake is one of the best in the world, all ITB for long over a decade. Many others. Yes .. it can be done. As for what to add in gear, you have to always be looking at the weak link in your chain, and go after that. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I have had the same gear (more or less) for 13 years, and it's wonderful to just WORK. Mixing ITB allows a lot of creativity, but you REALLY have to know what you're doing to make the sound quality up there. Analog gear is slow, ITB is fast. The people who are busy need a lot of fast. My chain is all analog plus Sequoia's stock linear phase EQ which is the first digital EQ I have liked.. I'm set up to handle any style and quality of mix with 4 outboard and 2 digital pieces, plus DA and AD. The best mixes only get 2 analog pieces. Some I use 3, others all 4.

make a mix, commit, get better, compare and learn ... it's the only way forward. we win together, making money from enabling people to rely on you is unethical. and just too much power.

Please get more mastering engineers... (The good ones like this guy) the general beginner engineer I feel now thinks they can master ( I call it "fake mastering" or just throwing a limiter or two on the mix and calling it a day) and its just not true. I think this is because there is a lack of knowledge on what they actually do and what their process is!

Hi there. Thanks for the opportunity. Bass:you answered yes. Could you elaborate on that please? Reverb: do you have go to Reverb?
@brianlucey832
@brianlucey832 8 жыл бұрын
I was just kidding around at that point. Bass ... I like. Bass? Yes! Reverb is not for mastering, unless the client asked, which they don't that goodness. Yes with a ? I think I have used reverb once in 16 years. It was a live thing, board mix. Bricasti M7 is the best natural verb IMO. But reverb is not for mastering. I could have said "no" but if Dave is the client, I say an awkward "yes?"
