Managing and mastering fear, stress and anxiety with former Astronaut Dr. Sandra Magnus and former Navy TOPGUN instructor Admiral Sandy Winnefeld.
We fear the unknown, change and of course danger. In this discussion, Dr. Sandra Magnus and Admiral Sandy Winnefeld hammer home how they mastered fear, stress and anxiety in lifelong careers with extreme danger, uncertainty and responsibility. Desensitization through extensive training and preparation has been the simple logic, however it requires a lot of hard work and discipline. If you’re willing to put in the work, Dr. Magnus and Admiral Winnefeld show how any person can conquer fear and anxiety.

That's right...he's da man..tornadoes respect him and want to be more like him.....I can picture young hank playing in a field and a EF-0 drops down and starts to slowly follow him. He's wearing a cowboy hat and it suddenly goes flying in the wind so he looks at the tornado 🌪 with a angry face and the tornado shrinks down and switched wind direction and his hat blows back onto his head and he dusts it off ....then he goes home and it starts following him and his mom FREAKS OUT when she sees it and grabs him and heads for the storm celler and he stops her and says MOM HE FOLLOWED ME HOME ...CAN I KEEP HIM...I NAMED HIM DUSTY GUSTERSSON..and she's at a loss for words dusty stays a few hundred feet away so he doesn't hurt the house...and at THAT MOMENT SHE KNEW he was gonna be a professional storm chaser and millions of people will follow him and adorn him one day...the end

@@lornperkins4270 Dusty Gustersson lived with them for years, and Hank played fetch with him all the time. When the day finally came, Dusty and Hanl set out to capture images and videos of Tornadoes. That's when they hit a big one. F5 in size and power, yet stuck in the middle of the field, Hank stared it down, and right as it was about to end him, Gusty sacrificed himself, forcing the F5 to weaken and bow in submission to Hank. Gusty will be remembered.

Dr. Magnus' comments about the difference between theoretical knowledge and experiential knowledge reminded me of the first time I flew over a volcanic eruption back in 2014. I knew, on paper, that the lava I was looking at would have a temperature between 1000 - 1200C, but actually FEELING the heat coming up through the belly of the plane was something else entirely.

Hank's knowledge translates into calmness and effective communication for all of us.. he puts us right in the chase in the passenger seat. Thank you very much for this excellent video Hank. When I was younger, I used to be deathly afraid of wind. Not just tornadoes, but wind itself. Any wind, even 5 mph winds, didn't matter. Even though that fear is now gone, interestingly enough, it has left me with a permanent interest in weather phenomena. I overcame my fear by exposure to wind, but it was extremely difficult to do. I would hate even going outside any time there was wind. If there was a storm, I would cry for hours on end. One day I had decided I'd had enough, and I went outside on a windy day. I was almost paralyzed for a minute, but then my heart rate slowed and I started to realize that I wasn't in the nightmare I always imagined myself in. For once, I smiled in the face of what was previously a monster to me by staring it in the eyes. What I learned from that experience is that often times when we are gripped by fear and anxiety, we have to expose ourselves to that monster that lurks in our minds and not look away. Sometimes the monster may be portrayed by something we saw on an article or somewhere else online, and the only real solution is to get out in the real world and see for yourself.

At the age of about 9 1/2, to my grandmother I predicted the Nashville tornado of March 3rd, 2020 the night before it happened. Ever since then, I’ve had an undying interest in meteorology. One day, at the age of 10, I found one of Hank’s videos and have been a die hard fan ever since. I remember every day when he was getting close to 1 million subscribers, I closely watched his sub count until he reached that milestone. Fear is such an under examined thing in todays world. In the past I was worried I was going to die from health problems that never even existed in the first place. I had wasted all of that time, focus, and energy on something that wasn’t even real. Fear is a useful tool in present survival moments that can keep you alive, but in most cases it works against you. Learning to accept that there are just some things you can’t control, and working towards controlling the things you CAN control, are how I’m beginning to win my war over fear.

For several years I had a dangerous job that usually was scary and quite stressful. Although there were days I was very comfortable with doing the needed tasks, most days there was fear involved because one small mistake could be catastrophic. I had to convince myself that just following the proper procedures everything would work out. Put the arrogance aside and never be afraid to ask for help when in a tough situation was always the right thing to do. Just stop everything and figure out the best course of action to resolve the occasional dilemma. When training new people while doing the job I would tell them that the sick feeling they are getting in their stomach will never go away. Having that scary sickening feeling kept you alert, you would take your time, and not make crucial mistakes. Some people would get over confident, quit taking their time, and once they did that they made the mistakes that cost the company lots and lots of money, and potentially could even cost someone their life. Fortunately no one ever got hurt while I was there. Having fear isn't necessarily a bad thing, being able to control it, then face your fears to achieve the things you must accomplish can be very satisfying, or maybe it was just relief I was feeling. Been years since I had that job and I still suffer from the fear I felt.

This was a really good presentation. In over 30 years of aviation, training & manufacturing I have seen the best and the worst in "leadership" or the lack thereof. I have been a "team member" and a "team leader" in different capacities. The good bosses respect their people, listen to them and knows that they know what they are doing. What the "workers" need is today's goal with complete & timely information. The good boss clears obstacles from the path of his/her people. A good team member keeps the boss up-to-date. The rising tide lifts all boats thing. Conversely poking people in the butt with a sharp stick is not leadership. So on, so on & so on...in a nutshell.

8:40 This is a very interesting approach to training. Not simulating a realistic scenario but a worst-case scenario that's different each time.

Very interesting listening to the pitfalls of leadership amongst the young. I spent a great deal of my career in the music industry which, by it's very nature, consists largely of young people. At times it could be chaotic and no-one would ever ask for help. To use the old cliche "Youth is wasted on the young". I can tell you for nothing, I made a whole bunch of mistakes I would never make now! Great video, Hank - you make some of the most interesting and thought provoking videos on the internet. Thankyou.

One of the most practical, leadership lessons given by true leaders. Excellent interview and discussions. Young, aspiring (to even established) leaders would benefit a lot from this video. Thank you all. 👏👏👏

This is fantastic. Thank you all! I love stuff that makes my brain fizz, but with advancing age comes a realization that...well....the carbonation level is dropping, and that worries me. Thank you for helping me restock on fizz!

I had a friend in college who was also my piano accompanist (I was a music major and violinist). She had started out as a music major, but switched to biology because she felt the demands of a music major was too much (music majors have no life since we need to practice 42 hours out of every day, plus do the homework for one's classes, including classes which are outside one's area of concentration. She was no slouch though, and she held a 4.0 GPA all the way through. After studying her way through a PhD, my friend eventually landed a job at NASA as a mission specialist, and every time she went up she was super excited. She just brimmed with excitement. It's kind of hard to describe her exuberance about it. Judy Resnik is no longer with us. She died in the Challenger accident. But she died doing what she loved. She never had fear, and what better thing to die doing than what you love. In regard to aviation, there's a saying which I bet the Admiral would agree with. It goes, "There are old pilots, and there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots." It's basically saying be purposeful, and not reckless. The best fighter pilots are not reckless. They are purposeful, and they can think clearly under pressure. Kinda like really good storm chasers. They patiently play out the game until they reach an advantage, and then very quickly take that advantage and turn it into a win. Like fighter pilots, people who succeed never lose sight of their goal. Aside from that, the best advice I can give anyone is to always ask "why." Why, why, why. That curiosity in life will not only make you successful in what you do, but it will also guarantee that you will never be bored with life. Life has so much to offer for those want to know and to learn. My only complaint about life is, that on average, we only have 75 years or so to do it all in. I'm sure I couldn't get bored if I had 1,000 years, and I'll wager that these three feel the same way. I'm grateful to all three of these people, and many others who have in the course of my life imparted knowledge into my tiny lump of gray matter. It is my hope that there are many others watching Pecos Hank's videos, and other informative videos, who feel the same way. These people should be cherished for what they bring to our lives.

What I've discovered in 75 years of life is that courage doesn't mean not feeeling fear - it means doing what needs to be done IN SPITE OF BEING SCARED OUT OF YOUR WITS.

In 2016 I commented on Hank's video titled "TOO CLOSE TO EF4 TORNADO - Inside Debris Cloud in 4K" in which Hank was roughly 150 meters from a violent tornado. At about 5:25 to 6:00 in the video, he realizes his choice to get that close put him in a life-threatening situation. I asked him how he decides to stay or flee in the face of those dangerous situations. His reply: " You stay for the epic shot and you flee when you think you might die... I took a gamble that day." This speaks to Hank's comment about being too fearless in his past. I'm sure the ensuing 6 years have tempered his decision-making!
