Slalom is one of the critical exercises in the basic motorcycle rider course and the foundation of many other slow speed skills. I show the techniques that will help you do it right, and do it with ease.
This is the first video in the series on mastering slow speed motorcycle control.

My instructor told me to always look straight ahead. Cones should be felt through periphery vision. Maintain a constant speed of 6-7kmph, use only foot brakes if you must, and when you start, start by taking a curve from one imaginary cone before the other ones. That helped me pass my exam on the first attempt. I took the exam on Yamaha MT-07. I notice a lot of people failing in slalom tasks.

You were lucky to have a great instructor. Imaginary cone - he/she made you initiate the countersteer. The rest - all great points.

Thanks a lot, Lana! Your well-structured and pleasant lessons give me a lot more confidence. How do you control your speed in these exercises? Is it mere clutch control or do you add more tools? Thanks in advance for your reaction and looking forward to subsequent lessons.

Peter, do you have a crystal ball? This is exactly what my next video will be about. If the weather works out, I'll have it on my channel about a week from now.

Excellent as always. Thank you, Lana! So I went to the Nordkapp (Norway) from France (8000+km in 22days😂) on a GS750 and found myself shaken and overly careful after dropping the bike in a tight turn on day 1. I had underestimated the additional weight -top weight at that- from the baggage load. How do you address bike loads in training for tight turns?

Hi Christiane, perfect question. Congratulations on such a long trip! You are right, packing and riding a loaded bike is a separate challenge. I personally prefer to keep all my weights as low as possible (paniers) and minimize the top load at all costs. As for training, I don't train with additional weights, maybe I should :). I just take my first day on trails with a fully loaded bike slower, giving myself more time and space for turns and any maneuvers.
