Artists can learn a lot about making comics engaging and visually appealing by looking at different panel arrangements and their effects on storytelling. In this lesson, Aaron Conley teaches the importance of quickly sketching out both full character shots and detailed backgrounds to set the tone and context in a comic page. He points out how including full body shots of characters like Wolverine and comprehensive backgrounds can really improve the storytelling in comics. Aaron also talks about the role of backgrounds in creating mood and atmosphere and he mentions how close-ups and action shots can make the storytelling more dynamic. Aaron discusses the nine-panel grid layout too, showing how it's useful for both learning and professional comic creation.

I think people misuse the word background when they mean environment. The environment can and often should be in the foreground middle ground and background. It creates a lot more of an interesting composition. The great Carl Potts got me to think this way and it really helped to level my composition up.

"This could be like...another dude!" Btw, I've been unsuccessful in tracking down anything that shows how to layout a background like George Perez did, or how to draw so many heroes in one scene as he did or as Jerry Ordway has done. I hope that this channel might feature the best methods of crowd drawing like in All-Star Squadron and Crisis on Infinite Earths, and how to put so much detail in the space shown yet keep it clean enough to see everything, and keep track of elements while putting them in, to avoid crowding. Or do either of the aforementioned explain their processes anywhere? Anyways, this channel has been helping me considerably to refine my drawing.

This video reminded me of a question I have in the back of my mind.. If I only have around 4-8 hour a day for drawing, is it better to split those 8 hours into 4 hours of practice and 4 hours for drawing what I want or personal projects? Or is it better to alternate from day to day? For example, on day 1, I focus entirely on practice, and on the next day, I dedicate the entire time to personal projects, and so on. would love to hear your opinion on this !
@NATA5II
@NATA5II 2 ай бұрын
Whatever feels good for you. Some days you’ll burn out on practice in 2 hours so you do 6 on personal stuff. I wouldn’t worry so much about timing it to the seconds. Stay focused and make it count when you’re practicing that’s more important than time spent.Another important part is applying what you learned in practice to your personal stuff.
@ProkoTV
@ProkoTV 2 ай бұрын
EXACTLY what NATA5II said. It's not about setting that time goal. It's about studying with an intentional plan for what you'll learn. Unless you need to set a timeframe to practice in or you won't spend any time practicing, loose guidelines on what you intend to practice/learn is the way to go. Just give yourself that goal to tackle each day and let it take the time it needs. As for splitting up learning and personal projects, try to make the personal projects contain what you want to get better at. It pushes you outside your comfort zone and you'll have more fun with the practice that way.

Most artists I've met are really sensitive and insecure people... is it really confidence that makes their art so good or is it the insecurity itself that is beautiful in an artist which comes out through their art as some form of harmonic symphony? I have no idea.

Hey Proko, since you've been an artist for so long now, I wanted to ask have you ever had to deal with hand/wrist pain? I've noticed recently when I draw for extended periods I begin to get pain in the meaty part of my palm right under the thumb. I've began stretches in hopes to lessen it.
@ProkoTV
@ProkoTV 2 ай бұрын
Yep! Definitely have. It's important to do stretches and use tools that don't have you applying intense pressure, especially for making smaller things. If you're working traditionally with pencils, try the overhand grip. It helps a lot! But if you're working digitally, adjust your pressure curve, use paperlike screen protectors and other things to lessen the intensity of what it takes for you to make a mark. And mix in those streches!

@ProkoTV

US comics and manga share a lot of overlapping rules with some differences necessitated by page structure, panel counts and publishing format. But most of the guideline rules apply to both.

There are auto translated Portuguese subtitles available. We aren't currently allowed by KZfaq to have multiple languages audio tracks but are ready to create and upload all of those when they do roll that out to us. In the meantime, your behavior of spamming us with comments about this subject is incredibly rude. A person moderates these comments and you spammed them about supplying a thing that has as much availability on here as we currently can provide.

Is there any hope for artist in the future , becoz of the ai and stuff. What kind of job will it affect. Can become a story artist
@ProkoTV
@ProkoTV 2 ай бұрын
Absolutely! Despite how it feels right now, humans are different from the machine made art. That only crafts things based on what's been seen before and fed into it. Humans invent and chart new paths.
@ghengis423

If anything, if AI becomes the standard for art, than people will pay premium for man-made stuff, similar to a lot of crafted products now. Although i don't think a lot of fields like concept art, storyboarding, or comics will end up going full ai. Maybe I'm naive, but i think a lot of worthwhile places and companies still understand the importance of a real person's hand in the product, at least for now

The best teacher for action in comics (either for pacing, composition, etc) you have to read manga. Stuff like OnePunch Man, Jujutsu Kaisen, among others. Visceral, amazing and outstanding paneling and composition, and more importantly clear and concise action. Sadl, US comics are really bad at action, and they tend to throw text amidst crucial moments in aciton oftentimes. Let the aciton breath, let it be grand and spectacular! Don't shy away from page count, make it big and powerful, and textless as much as possible, let visuals speak.
@ProkoTV
@ProkoTV 2 ай бұрын
I understand where you're coming from with this one. Classically, US comics were pretty bad at this. But poke around into some more recent artists like James Harren, Daniel Warren Johnson, Tradd Moore, Nick Dragotta and you'll find artists that are doing exactly what you're saying. Superheroes and legacy characters/publishers still have a good hold but some great, writers, artists and publishers are doing great work and deserve the recognition for pushing the medium forward.
