Respectfully, Matt Choi isn’t elite, he’s about average for a highschooler. He’s also a beginner for the most part so no hate, just want to make it clear because he’s still got a lot to learn himself.

He may not be elite and has a lot more room for improvement, but man's pace and him finishing an ultra makes him have some sort of credibility.

@@JonahhhTV true, I actually like Matt and a lot of his content, but as someone who ran D1 middle distance (not trying to sound braggy, but Ive ran about a minute faster than him in the mile, in lifting terms, someone that runs 4:00 vs 5:00 is the skill difference of someone that can 1RM bench 2 plates and someone that can 1RM over 4 plates, both are impressive but there’s a huge gap there, and while it’s impressive to run a 5:00 mile or 3:00 marathon, it’s like benching 225, it’s not elite nor close to elite) is now studying to become a collegiate level coach, I gotta say a lot of his advice is quite bad. Again, no hate to him, he’s just young in the sport and is still learning and running is so much more complicated than most people realize, but a lot of the training advice he gives is inoptimal at best and a huge injury risk at its worst. That just gets a little dangerous when claims get thrown around that he’s elite and an expert when he’s not. There’s an extremely large skill and knowledge gap between someone who can finish a marathon or an ultra, and the people that can win them.

@@carsonmalleet4367Absolutely. Add to that that there are about a 100 different genes that determine human endurance capacity, not to mention different muscle fiber types. Mark has mostly fast twitch...he will never run fast for long distances.🙋🙏

2:59 is not elite, at least for a guy. It's a pretty good sub-elite women's time, though. Consider the men's world record is 2:01 and the women's WR is 2:14. I can bench a one plate per side, six times. Is that elite?

Elite? This guy is an advanced beginner runner. And that's fine and great, but him passing himself off as an elite is fraudulent.

No hate but yeah I don’t think he’s elite, he only started running couple years ago or so, he’s made tremendous progress tho which yeah probably makes him “elite for someone whos a sophomore on running

Good explanation of threshold running--as you run easy and lower that HR it improves the upper bound of your LTHR (lactate threshold HR). It sounds a bit like you do some Hadd/Maffetone blend training. On LRC there's a good thread about Hadd training. A way to think about it is being able to run long and fast, but locking into it by feel the better you get and without looking at the watch.

What Mark doesn't understand is that some people have more total fast twitch muscle fiber vs slow twitch. Fast are explosive, slow for endurance. Mark was a powelifter. He is primarily fast twitch. He will never run fast for iong distances.🙋🙏

Can anyone explain to me how im able to run 5 miles straight but stand, calves work out or walking tires the fuck out of my feet ? is running less damaging to your feet than standing or walking ?

Running encourages circulation where standing in place can inhibit it. You’re also more mentally prepared for the discomfort that comes with running, so it feels normal when it starts hurting. It’s not as much pure fatigue you’re feeling but moreso discomfort from your body getting stuck in a position it doesn’t like for a long time. Also, with weights, you are working your muscles anaerobically with long contractions at much closer to maximum strength output. The pain that comes from lifting is your muscles literally tearing. The pain from running comes from lactic acid produced by the chemical reactions that occur while generating enough fuel for your muscles to produce quick powerful movements for long spans of time, that’s why you’re mostly just working your legs but your whole body hurts. So it’s two different things causing the pain, and training one doesn’t help much with the other.
