Mastering the long run is absolutely key to any kind of distance training. Whether it's considering nutritional and hydration needs before the race, what to wear, how to monitor your effort and pace, how to recover afterwards or what to actually do IN the run!
I've tried to break down what I think are the important aspects of the long run to me in the hope that you might just pick up a new idea or two of how to do it properly
Now go get out there and good luck!

"Talks about running unbalanced with things in your hands" "Proceeds to run with GoPro for our benefit" :P Great video Ben. What Eliud Kipchoge accomplished was truly inspiring. Don't blame you one bit for tearing up!

Awesome video! I love breaking all my runs in chunks, and try to make successive chunk a little faster, even if it is just a fraction with the "Last Mile Best Mile" as a mantra. It builds my confidence and it helps me not to go out too fast and finish.

I started watching Kipchoge’s run at 2am here in the U.S. and I actually got nervous for him near the end fearing he might not make it.... silly me! He’s a machine!!

I have a similar hydration vest but mines a Harrier 10L... on long runs you'll appreciate taking off layers (hat, gloves, wind jacket and putting it all in your hand)

That’s true. It’s served me well as well. Will need it for other reasons in Thailand!! Mucho hydration needed!!

I did my LIRF Course yesterday and rolled my ankle on the second warm up sessions. In MIU this morning no fractures but very badly sprained and bruised. Easy week for me this week 🥴

Was amazing watching it yesterday morning, nothing like a nice slow long run! I was ment to be doing the Peterborough half marathon today but sadly it got cancelled an hour after it was ment to start we was all standing in the pens in the pouring rain for getting on a hour, police was called after a man was acting suspiciously near mile 11 marker, thought he had a bomb was gutted but totally understanding.

Yeah and planning already for next year got a few lines up and a couple of full ones, it's just a great half marathon in the city center so get good crowds and a good standard in the field.

It was phenomenal to watch Kipchoge run that fast and break the 2 hour barrier. What a speed.. :o! I am struggling to beat the 20minute 5K barrier for so many months now... keep trying, no human is limited haha! Oh and what a great dog you have! What did he earn after 20K?? carbohydrates cookies? haha.

Hi Ben, great video even though I'm 2 years late for it lol. I have a hydration vest (saloman) but I find when I wear it I over heat and struggle to control my heart rate. I've only wore it on 3 long runs but gave up with it as it made the runs feel real hard due to a higher HR than normal.

I’m honestly really gutted about my long run ability at the mo. I increased my mileage too fast and loved my long runs. I developed runners knee in both knees through over use and now I can’t run further than 3 mile at the slow, low HR paces without pain. Gutting. I really really hope this will change with time. I can still do good distances but they have to be up tempo🙄. Means I’m restricted to cross trainer or bike for “long runs”.

When you’re ready then start again from scratch. Even I’m doing that. If you view it as lifelong then there’s no rush whatsoever. It will come back I promise 👍🏻

Fantastic!!!! A question for the brains trust, is it possible to shave a whole 30min off first and only marathon time before London? or is this an ambitious case of aiming too high X

Hi Ben, how much walking would you typically incorporate in to a long run? Is it just when you stop for a drink break?
@ThisMessyHappy
@ThisMessyHappy 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, yes it’s just when we take a drinks break etc. We don’t walk but that’s not to say you can’t. It’s very individual 👍🏻
