Honestly I have seen guys make boring bars this way for the lathe. If I had to nit pick that death towel he put in the bed of the lathe is an accident waiting to happen.

The most amazing thing was it didn't cut a slot in an aluminium block. The problem still remains but the broken milling cutter was recycled. Truly amazing.

It's a chip guard. I often place a drop cloth on the ways when cutting iron or something else messy
@mt8149
@mt8149 Жыл бұрын
@@halfcircleworkshop I think the cloth is a bad idea because it could easily get caught in the turning and cause a bad injury. I'm not over-zealous with safety but that is an obvious catastrophe waiting to happen.

I like your ideas. My only caution that I will suggest to anyone is to place your machine tools farther from a wall that may prevent your getting away from something flying your way. Be careful.

Had similar thought. But then the penny dropped (then I realised), he was demonstrating why NOT to throw out broken tool bits: They can be perfect material for DIY custom tools bits.

@@Mastermind-I'm here to help, my qualifications - thirty five years experience employed as a high precision toolmaker in metal and plastic industries working to size tolerances to 0.00005" surface finish 2 micron of inch, other duties include instructing apprentices in their training. Now to your question: It is best practices to clamp lathe tools as close as possible to the tool post. This reduces flex and strain on the machine. Flexing can also produce vibration, reduce the life of the cutting edge and leave a poor surface finish. The work clamping arrangement on milling machine is far from satisfactory. The purpose of the flats machined on the boring bar are not explained. The work piece shown bored on the mill could as easily be machined on a lathe with the correct swing. The work piece being held on a face plate or independent four jaw chuck. There are always exceptions to the rules to get the job done, but on the main best practices should be maintained which incumbences machine shop safety. Cheers

The tools that you created out of the broken end mill would have only cost you about $25 to purchase. Unless you are just machining for a hobbie your time is worth way more than it took you to do this. The makeshift boring head is also a very inexpensive tool that can be purchased relatively cheap and have a more precise adjustment. Just because you "Can" do something, does not mean that you "Should". Nice to see that there are still guys around that can make their own tools in a pinch! Maybe teach the new guys about clearance angles on your next video.

Depends on your situation how much that time is worth .. If there's a deadline and the replacement parts are stuck on a container ship somewhere off the coast of Los Angeles, or if you're in a country where labor is 1.50 an hour, the numbers change..
