Noticed a couple months ago that the YT player was adjusting its size to fit the frame of widescreen movies, which was awesome, cause I hated making videos about 2.35 films that had black letterbox on top and bottom. I experimented with some of the later videos of last year (Mandy, Harry Potter), and I really liked the results. Taking it a step further with this. I intentionally avoided making some videos on paintings and photos that were vertical, just cause the regular 16:9 left so much dead space. So this is a cool development. And it modifies on phones, too. Generally, new features (like new editing tricks I learn) spark new ideas. Excited to experiment some more, maybe with some 1.33 movies next! Anyway, hope you enjoy. Got some great stuff planned for 2019.

"Next time you have an instinct to turn around, listen to it." Waaaaay back in the day my husband and I were driving home to the children and we we passed a car stopped on the freeway. Despite the urgency to get home, we turned around. It was a migrant family. A large one. All crammed into this beat up Ford wagon. They had run out of petrol. To this day I'm grateful we turned around and helped them as best we could. All these years later I still think about them and pray for them. The children in that car will be all grown now with children of their own. I hope they're doing ok. Next time you have an instinct to turn around, listen to it. You will be so grateful you did.

I have often joked that our series presents (mostly-horizontal) art history through the lens of the present. Brilliant video! And funny thing: we have a Migrant Mother video on the schedule for next month. Before I watched yours I almost scrapped it, but I'm now convinced our angle is different enough. Thanks for making this. Always enjoy it when you talk art.

I just would like to point out that the photograph of the African American woman in front of the American flag was shot by Gordon Parks, not by Lange. I’m sure all of those images in that segment came from the public FA archive, but with no source/copyright credit shown in the video for the photographer of each of the photographs shown in that segment, a casual viewer might assume that Lange made all of those images which she did not.

GadMas : I suppose it’s a little late to start a conversation, but I travelled to many places, and saw a woman in India with her face draped in silver. ( She was poor. ) Even in India, she looked so unusual. I never felt that I could invade someone’s space. Unfortunately, I had sent home my SLR, because it’s extremely heavy. I could never have got close to anyone ( I didn’t know ). Vive la Différence!

I saw a print of this in person at a gallery in Montreal in December. One thing you pick up on when seeing the physical print is that the face (and most importantly eyes) of the mother are not critically sharp... the focus is actually on the baby at the bottom right of the frame. It was a great reminder for me as a photographer to stop worrying so much about everything being tack sharp and keep focused on what really matters - the subject and message you’re trying to convey.
