Much of the choreography (or whatever word you use to describe this for a machine) of the aircraft is poor, smoke effects were clearly coming from tubes, half the action is off camera, and "fancier" effects came from what was more than obvious a toy.

The P51 was almost a footnote in history. Wasn't until a royal air force test pilot suggested sticking a Merlin engine in it and then it became the best plane of the war
@Bo_Nidle
@Bo_Nidle 4 ай бұрын
Best escort fighter definitely. Best plane of the war is open to debate and I say that as a Mustang fan with 45 minutes stick time in the real thing. The term "Best Fighter" has to be qualified. Best escort fighter in terms of range definitely, but other than it didn't out shine every other fighter in all respects at all. Was it a very good fighter, yes, but "the best" is a broad claim. Dogfighter? That title would have to go to the Spitfire which was better armed, (cannons beat MG's, even .50BMG) more agile and had a better rate of climb. Ground attack? The Typhoon wins that one with its 4 x 20mm cannons, 8 or even 16 x 60lb rockets and/or bombs. All rounder? That would probably be the Fw190. Most successful in terms of kills goes to the Bf109. Like I said, the term is open to debate.

@jacobclement8150 I would love to get more stick time but it’s a bit expensive. However my reasoning is based on facts not blind patriotism. You can break it down by nationality and amongst US fighters in the ETO, the P-47 would give the P-51 a good run for the title. Other than range and top speed the P-47 was better armed with 8 x .50s, and had a higher dive speed than any other fighter. It could take a lot more punishment than the P-51. In the ETO the second highest scoring outfit in the 8th USAAF was the 56th Fighter Group which stuck with the P-47 through out the war. (Technically it’s the top scoring group in the 8th as the top scoring group was the 354th which was a 9th USAAF group on attachment to the 8th)The top two USAAF aces in the ETO, Gabreski and Johnson, both flew with the 56th in P-47’s. As I said the term “best” is open to debate.

Band of Brother’s success is due to its reasonable scale. In budget, timeline, characters and story it’s all much easier than Pacific or Masters of the Air. You can properly tell the story of easy company in 10, one hour episodes. You can’t tell “With the Old Breed”, “A helmet for my Pillow”, and “I’m staying with my boys” in that same scope. You can’t tell the story of the bloody hundredth in a few episodes. A mini series is a great tool to follow a couple dozen people over a story spanning a year or so. Not hundreds of people over nearly 5 years.
@arkwill14
@arkwill14 Ай бұрын
EXACTLY! I think they failed to understand why _Band of Brothers_ was successful. Because they stayed with one relatively small group of soldiers the audience got to know them and how they functioned as a unit. And because of that the combat scenes were all the more intense because the audience was invested in those characters. _The Pacific_ was a lot harder to follow as they jumped from unit to unit and many characters were in and out before viewers even knew anything about them. And _Masters of the Air_ went even further in the wrong direction.

The funny thing is that a b17 would drop 40 100 pounds bombs on a light industrial center like this one, so there's actually about 12 other bombs missing, the big inaccurate is how fast they are dropping them and that they are not following the lead navigators signal drop all together on the target, the big problem of the show is the plane never changes when by this point in the war the lead navigators plane would have a radar instead of a ball turret and all of the b17 would have had a chin turret installed, not to mention there are almost zero tactics in this fight for example the lead bomber would have one initial smoke bomb so the rest of the group could see the signal to drop bombs at this time all the other bombardiers in the group just toggled the release switch and didn't use the bomb sights

Even the closest in Mustangs would still be 1,000 feet above the bomber stream, not flying through the formation. The second he P-51's spotted enemy planes, they'd ditch the drop tanks, the P-51's started out in "Finger Four," formation but later changed to Line Abreast. This just hurts.

You made the right call. It was bad. The actors were downright unlikeable and there was no unifying theme or narrative like BOB or the Pacific. It was just "hey fellas whaddya say we 23-skidoo into these forts", more or less all of them getting shot down, then some time in a POW camp. The Tuskegee airmen storyline was an afterthought and would have been a better basis for a series. Hanks/Spielberg have lost their fastball it seems.

The first half of 1944, the mustangs took out so many German aircraft in the skies and parked at Airfields, thousands of them, that the Luftwaffe was unable to provide any arial defense in France during D-day. Haven't seen the whole thing, but CGI as of 2024 seems to rely on overcast, twilight or glare and dirty windows. Scott's Napoleon had similar low light or visual impairment. Also there seem to be too many aircraft in one place. It looks dramatic, but the fighters would be more spread out. The bomber crews felt that they were being used as bait because the P-51s were freed from close escort of the bombers and turned loose to hunt Luftwaffe fighters.

The P-38 Lightning could also fly far enough to do these escort missions, but their maneuverability and high altitude performance were not sufficient to take on the late war German fighters. As soon as the P-51 became available the P-38 was relegated to night duty and recon duty or shipped to the Pacific, where it was very successful against the less modern Japanese fighters.

This show was positioned as created for lovers of this topic, but it was created by those people and for those people who will not change anything about it. If we were shown a space battle from Star Wars + with bad CGI, it can't be excused because we weren't there. And which "event participants" are you talking about? If they were, they may have described it as "chaos", which the director took as his own. Do you want to learn about WWII aviation? Read books by people who at that time still knew how to walk independently...

@@TunderTunder. Quit paying too much attention to CGI, it’s not great but it gets its point of the story across. Allocation of budgeting is different in every project, of course this isn’t going to be pacific rim level cgi or real planes considering there’s a handful of B-17’s left. It’s comical to even disregard the entire show as everyone is doing over special effects. Practice on that short attention span of yours and sit still and watch the show.

It did not in any way follow the quality and time put into band of brothers and the pacific maybe because it was moved from HBO to Appletv. I was really disappointed and sad this could have been so much more than was given.

The P-51 was the best fighter plane of the war according to the Americans. The Spitfire was 100% superior in a dog fight. Just not over Berlin. P-39 had more kills (in the Soviet Air Force); the F6F had a higher kill ratio; the P-38 had better maneuverability, firepower, and twin engine redundancy; the P-47 was tougher, the Tempest was fastest Allied fighter of the war, and the Hurricane was the only reason there was a winnable war in the first place.

Target Berlin Berlin, the capital of Germany, was selected as a prime target for the AAF, not only for its industrial importance, but because it was believed the Luftwaffe would react in force to defend it, suffering heavy losses in the process. The first attack was made on March 4, 1944, but only 29 bombers reached target because of weather. Two days later, 660 AAF heavy bombers reached Berlin in the face of tremendous opposition; 69 bombers and 11 escorting fighters were lost -- the AAF claimed 179 German planes destroyed. The AAF returned on March 8 and 462 bombers, escorted by 174 P-51s over the target, bombed the Erkner bearing factory; again, the Luftwaffe lost heavily. National Museum of the USAF

The dogfight scene is just so stupid. All those planes in one area, flying that fast, there would be planes crashing into one another, friendly fire like you wouldn’t believe, and such chaos that both sides would take too many casualties to do any good. No one can doubt the bravery and sacrifice of these airmen in the war. I grew up in the 1950s and must have built a plastic or balsa model of 20 different types of WW2 airplanes. But: It is well known that the strategic bombing of Europe was a waste of lives and treasure. It accomplished virtually nothing to shorten the war. Hitler's armnamen minister, Albert Speer said so in his memoirs and the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survery after the war agreed. If you think about the little damage done to London by German bombesr or from the buzz-bombs and V2s the message is the same. Winning a war takes "boots on the ground" and control of natural resources. All that the bombing does is make people angry. Ask the Ukranians.
@BarryAllen__1A23
@BarryAllen__1A23 4 ай бұрын
Yes because Albert Speer definitely did not have a bias of his own and definitely did not just make stuff up to make the allies in the bad light. Whether you like it or not strategic airstrikes heavily impacted the war. Factories, oil rigs and bridges being destroyed will severely hurt the military capability of the enemy. Bombs can easily be manufactured, while destroyed roads and other infrastructures takes a significant time and resources for the enemy slowing them down even further. Aerial supremacy is still an integral part of every military in the world. Boots in the ground is why the eastern front was bloody and aerial supremacy is why the western allies have significantly lower casualties than the soviets

Out of all the (many) inaccuracies depicted in this clip, none of them infuriates me more than the line "The P-51 Mustang was the best (US) fighter plane of the war." No, it wasn't. The P-38 Lightning had the highest kill ratio of any US aircraft in WW2, the highest number of kills, the first US fighter aircraft to shoot down a German aircraft, used to shoot down Admiral Yamamoto's personal aircraft on April 18, 1943. I can go on and on about this aircraft, my favorite of the second world war.
@LuisSoto-ho5fw

Interesting perspective. But I believe that line was spoken by a character? If so, consider that to US bomber crews the Mustang was akin to sliced bread, mainly because it could stick with them all the way to the target and back. Bomber crews, weren't particularly interested in, or privy of, kill numbers, or what was happening in the Pacific, but rather in the escort fighter they could SEE protecting them over Berlin, for example. Speak to a person from England, and the Spitfire is the end-all be all, because that's what defended their loved ones during the Battle of Britain. Us here in 2024 might have slightly more objective view, and perhaps more access to historical records.

@@EvilLordBane He said "Hands down, the best figther plane of the war." What we perceive as "facts" is often colored by the experience of the moment - and the narrator presenting that as a fact is well within character. My point is that to HIM, and to most B-17 crew at the time - that statement (however inaccurate, perhaps) would've been a statement of fact - Navigator Harry Crosby in 1944 may not have known - nor cared, I'd bet - about the actual range figures. For someone who've been through mission after mission of being nearly decimated by the Luftwaffe, and now has friendly escort all the way to Berlin...the P-51 must have seem forged by angels.
