The 100th takes on a deadly mission to Münster, Germany. Masters of the Air is now streaming. apple.co/_MastersOfTheAir
Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, Masters of the Air follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.
The series features a stellar cast led by Academy Award nominee Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle and Nate Mann, who are joined by Raff Law, Academy Award nominee Barry Keoghan, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook and Ncuti Gatwa.
Hailing from Apple Studios, Masters of the Air is executive produced by Steven Spielberg through Amblin Television, and Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman for Playtone. Amblin Television’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey co-executive produce alongside Playtone’s Steven Shareshian. In addition to writing, Orloff co-executive produces. Graham Yost also serves as co-executive producer. Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Dee Rees and Tim Van Patten serve as directors.

The episode described the Munster mission (10 Oct 1943) of the famous Black Week. 20 B-17 aircraft from the 100th departed from Thorpe Abbots (England) and only 13 reached the target. And of these 13 aircraft, only 1 returned, the Royal Flush of the legendary Robert Rosenthal.

Yup, they were WGr 21s, used mainly by heavy fighters such as Bf-110s, Me-410s and Ju-88s to break up formations and make the job easier for the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. A lucky direct hit would almost certainly be catastrophic for a B-17 or B-24
@AEB1066
@AEB1066 3 ай бұрын
They also had a bomb that was dropped from above a bomber formation set to explode after falling 1,000 feet. Some of these bombs contained phosphorus that produced a falling cloud of burning chunks: in photos that is often mis-identified as an exploded bomber going down. However the moment fighter escorts showed up the twin-engined interceptors where swept from the sky and even rockets became rare as they impacted on the speed and maneuverability of a fighter carrying them.

George Morrison was a tail gunner in the 303rd BG and told me about those rockets. He said " You'd see'em back there in our vapor trails a Me 110 or 410 and when I'd see his tail drop I knew he'd fired rockets at us. I'd immediately tell Dasheilds to pull'er up fast. The ship in front of us wasn't so lucky as those rockets took their wing off. George passed away in 1997 he was the sole survivor of his crew or so he always thought. I found Don Delaura the bombardier alive and well a few yrs after George passed. This series makes me really miss my friends.

Well, besides the historical events, the show did foreshadow it from the beginning. The colonels had mentioned replacements were being sent, several episodes before the replacements were ever shown. There would be no reason do mention the replacements so early into the series, unless the main character is being introduced with them. Similar to how Crosby is the narrator, instead of either Cleven or Egan. Add that “Masters of the Air” is a bit of a tribute to Steven Spielberg’s father, who was a bomber boy in the Pacific theater. So, it should not support anyone, the main character would be a the most famous Jewish bomber pilot.

I watched it and i lived in Münster for 15 years. I can see in one shot my house with the street. And as the bombs drops you can see exactly which streets are hits. Münster was bombed 102 times and 91% of all houses where destroyed. They dropped over 32000 bombs and 642.000 Phosporbombs. 20% of this are unexploded and a fast mayority of it remain in the ground until today, they try to defuse them when they find one. It is unclear if the bombs are stable in the future or if they crumble and explode in the future. It is terrible that so many people on both sides died.

@@AB-mw8oz I meant my “unlike these bomber crews” I wasn’t talking about there interest but rather that unlike the liftwaffe they had a set number of missions. You read my comment wrong

These Boys, eventually, were numbers and statistics. Losing a whole squadron would make you think, wouldn't it? And still they kept sending them in by the thousands, into a meat grinder, unescorted.

I'm suprised it has few American propaganda and planes get wrecked left right and center. The Flak is very unrealistic tough. Every time it goes off, hot sharp shrapnel should fly everywhere trough the plane if close enough. EDIT = Why are pieces around mark 1:30 falling so slow as if they where on the moon?

Our collective purpose as Americans was clearer back then, that's why. Now we just group up and regurgitate media lies to one another as the senators and representatives laugh at how well their scheme to turn us on one another is working. SMH.
