This excerpt from Jeffersons book really stuck with me "Having been treated by the Nazis like every other Allied officer, I walked down the gang plank wearing an Army Air Corps Officer's uniform towards a white US Army sergeant on the dock, who informed us "Whites to the right, N word to the left".

Funnily enough the colonel teaching them skills is colonel Darr Hayes Alkire who was the first CO of the 100th bomb group until eventually reassigned and led another bomb group in the med. Shot down became senior american officer at stalag luft 3. And by bitter irony once again leading many of the 100th in the camp

Jefferson was a chemistry graduate. Macon was a mathematician/ mathematics graduate which is why you had that scene to do with the range or their planes, the weight etc

@Flix2Us. That form of hand-to-hand fighting / combat you said being praticed in the POW camp is based on two books (entitled Defendu and All in) written by a former British Policeman whom developed this style in China based on his experiencing policing the violent criminal Chinese gangs there. He latest tough this to British and Allied troops in WW2 after joining the British Army.

The second invasion was in Southern France where the US and her allies attack. This was a pincher movement from the D-Day in the north and from the south this force. The southern attack was a success. Lt. Macon broke his neck and shoulder. 12:27

Technically, every 'Day' of a landing is that Campaigns' "D-Day." The invasion of France on Jun 6th was so huge (Largest ever in American History, but NOT the World's largest), it is usually called 'D-Day' and people know what you're talking about. Once the beach heads were established, and the invasion inland began, there were still targets that had to be taken out ahead of the mass of troops, to ensure Germany didn't simply push everyone right back into the ocean. (And if Germany's military had been in charge, that likely would've happened. Since Hitler alone could give orders, and he was SLEEPING during the first hours of the D-Day attack, well, the rest is literally 'History.') :-)

Hitler was in command of all panzer, panzergrenadier, and SS units. Infantry units were still able to act on the orders of their officers. However, infantry can only do so much when you're dealing with an invasion of that size.

@@quintomalley1196 I honestly can't say if Hitler's edict that he, and ONLY himself, could issue any orders that involved Germany's Infantry? I'll concede that is true. The Germans (And Hitler, while NOT actually a German), had a fatal infatuation with all things armor/caliber, so he (Hitler) may very well have considered the deployment of mere humans (ie, Infantry), beneath his exalted cares? Still, just as happened with Germany's few Battleships (All left to fend off the might of their Enemy, solo), the ego of Hitler and far too many of Germany's Commanders, is what cost them the war. Thankfully.

Jefferson, Macon and Daniels all did end up in Stalag Luft 3. Two of them were shot down attacking radar stations in Toloun. The remaining one attacking radar stations at Marseille. While no definitive proof they mingled with guys of the 100th it was very possible they did.Jefferson even wrote his own book on his experiences

Unfortunately the limitations we have for Wingate is that besides Crosbys book and what he writes about her. The information we do have on her is fairly limited. Besides the rumour that her family asked her name to he changed and a newspaper article post war that she got married. What she did or didnt do during the war if there is records of it, then they are likely still classified or have been destroyed

The fuel tanks were notorious not dropping when they should even up until the Korean war and more. There is a famous story of in the Korean war an American fighter pilot only managed to drop of of his tanks and still had to dogfight MIG's

A couple of historical facts behind the episode: I don't know if the 100th was involved in this Operation, but the Allies eventually broke out of Normandy with Operation Cobra, which was the first time (I believe) that Carpet Bombing was used as a tactic. The concentrated bombing virtually destroyed the German forces in the target area and the stalemate turned into a war of maneuver as American forces broke out. (I will also add that it helped that the British simultaneously launched Operation Goodwood which kept the German Armor formations in their area from rushing to plug the hole in the line that COBRA created). In the scene where Buck is listening on the Radio to the news that Russian forces have reached the Vistula River, this is a reference to Operation Bagration and the Warsaw Uprising. Not long after the Allies launched D-Day, the Russians also launched a massive offensive that destroyed Germany's Army Group Center on the Eastern Front (for reference Germany had 3 Army Groups Operating on the Russian Front.). The Russians advanced rapidly into Poland and as they approached Warsaw, the Polish Resistance rose up to fight the Germans. In response the Russians halted their advance and let the Germans regroup and crush the uprising destroying the city of Warsaw in the process.

The phone call crosby made is accurate. 3 days of phone calls and being passed from one to another. One time he even went where wingate said her office was and found nothing there.

@@qburns2035 They needed 12 or 15 episodes to cover all the story lines unless they didn't waste time with BS like Crosby's affair, Westgate's stuff spying in France, which there is zero evidence for, and the POW stuff which took up way too much time. Jamming in the unrelated Tuskeege airmen not necessary at all. If they focused on the air war then 9 would have been fine.

the POW experience is vital. All part of the airman experience. Some of the most compelling episodes have been the non-combat episodes. I have no issues with including the Tuskegee Airmen. They crossed paths with the 100th at SL3, so fair enough. Having a little background context for them is fine.@@TheSocratesian

@@nicholaslellenberg3963I disagree unless you are going to have 12 or 15 episodes. And the link with the 332nd fighter group men is very weak.
