I am going to be 63 in 3 months. I run 4 times per week after work and 3 weight lifting sessions during lunch time as well. It is not easy and at times it is difficult to head to gym or put on my running shoes. But the overall physical satisfaction after each session is something that motivates me. My weekly mileage isn't so much anymore but still keeping it at a respectable 30 miles plus each week. I hope to extend this routine for as long as I can.

That is awesome! You are an inspiration to us younger runners just getting over 40 and figuring this out so greatly helps to hear from masters that are doing the hard work to manage age as best we can :-)

This is great advice, I'm 49 and have been prome to injury, however, I've noticed marked difference by cross training on the bike and adding in 2 strength sessions a week.

Where was video like this when I started running 5 years ago, already a master? You’ve created a great resource here! Thank you!

I was running 5 days a week and my current (my first) marathon program pulled me back to 3 and I'm seeing great gains with the extra recovery days.

As a 53 year- old preparing for my first marathon I want to encourage you to keep enjoying your running! I need to work on my rest and sleep routines more, actually. Yes, I believe rest is very important- one guide to marathon preparation on audible (from a very experienced 100 marathon runner) basically suggests rest days after every bigger run. Am finding incorporating slow runs, speed work and strength training very helpful. Weekly 5k parkruns keep me competitive too!

Oh My Goodness- Your almost 40. Oowww. Running is complex. You hit on some good points. But you didn't mention hundreds of other things you can do to improve. Diet. Sleep. Pushing a sled. Wearing a weight vest. Using a weighted jump rope. Belly breathing. Running trails with roots and rocks to engage the brain for quickness in the feet. Always asking the question, "How can I get better, faster, stronger?" Track workouts. Goals. Planning for your goal races. Running 5K's often to see how you're progressing. Hills. Mountains. Choosing different routes. New scenery. Climbing Fourteeners. Backpacking to places that are quiet, so so quiet. Renewing your spirit. Running with the rabbits. Talking to the rabbits. Stopping in the trail ,just to look around. Learning the names of the wildflowers and trees and birds. Learning a bit of history of the places you run. Trudging through new snow. Having a nemesis that you want to beat at the next race. Pushing onward and upward. Challenge yourself. Laugh at yourself when you see that you've put on two different socks. Getting older can be a lot of fun. I'm 70.

Turning 60 was like falling off a cliff. My pace has slowed by over a minute at every distance from even 5 years ago.

Damn… I’ll be 40 April 2023. I’ve definitely had to adopt a 1/2 mile super easy jog, dynamic warm up, and then static stretch and more mobility after my workout. Approx 20 minutes for the warmup and 10-20 for the cool down. If I skip the warm up or cool down, I definitely feel it afterward

I’m 61 and went on the carnivore diet. Absolutely the best for any age runner. I run 13 hours a week mostly MAF heart rate and add speed work twice a week. Recovery is much faster, i feel so good, I cut out a rest day running 6 days a week. No pain, lots of energy, sleep is better, stress is much less. Nothing but meat, eggs, salt and butter. You simply must try it. I feel 20 years younger. Less injury prone, less digestive issues, never hungry. Really amazing. Blood test are great, doc says I’m his healthiest client.

Muscle can even be built with heavy weight training. I have put on muscle through my 50s by lifting heavy. I also like cross-training for sprinting-type activities - I am the world's slowest runner and can't run-sprint to save myself , but bike, row or ski - yep and it's fun.

I do two mile runs at the gym, so six miles a week, 30 minutes per two miles, also satisfied 😎👍💯I'll be 58 later this year. I put some tips on running on my channel too.

I'm astonished by how trashed my legs get, and the difficulty of recovery as I age. I started running about 4 months ago and my legs consistently feel sore, tight and stiff after running.

If you’re not already doing so, make sure your easy days are truly easy. I’ve been having great success with using a HR chest strap and setting my watch face during my easy runs to only display Heart Rate & Elapsed Time. This removes any temptation to push a little bit faster to get the pace to where you think in should be.

but if your mileage is more than a certain amount a week, then you could lose muscle built from weightlifting. how much? 30 miles a week would risk muscle loss? 40 miles a week?
@StrengthRunning

If you're lifting and eating enough, you won't lose muscle unless you have a LOT of muscle. It's a balancing act.
