This is an experimental restoration of a very unusual hand cutter machine used in the 19th century in every single Apothecary.
Why experimental? Because I've decided not to use colours but the natural beauty of the metal for the final result.

When you had taken all the paint off, all I was thinking was please don’t re-paint it some stupid black or red or some off the wall color. And then you stated that you were going to keep the unpainted look and I was so relieved that finally someone with some freck-ing taste. Way to go my friend.

YES, FINALLY! I’m so tired of seeing people grinding off casting marks, slathering everything with auto body filler and primer, and polishing every flathead bolt until all the edges are rounded over! Thank you, I love the finish.

Lovely job and great choice to go natural with the brushed patina. The natural staining it oiling if the wood. Can you explain the brash brushing? Is there a coating or something you've applied to the brass brush wheel? Or is it a special brass wheel made to do this? Because I've used bronze wheels to remove rust without harming the underlying metal but didn't get that result?

I really love brassing steel especially when its got texture like that! The brassing on bare steel looks great, the clear coat seems sensible too! I have also seen it done by using a blowtorch on bigger parts to heat the part then using a brass wire hand brush vigorously. The brass wheel seems to give a nice finish though! Very consistent! 👌

After the number of years its been around, a make over was sorely needed. I might have gone overboard on the color using a red. blue. or black. and highlighted the scroll work in gold or the brass. Thanks again for a great job. Narragansett Bay.

Question? Why boiled linseed oil? I just put together some linseed oil and beeswax for preserving some cast iron, Spanish Colonial and was also going to use it on an old wooden mirror frame that I do not want to completely restore. It belonged to my father and his father. Also will use for a wooden knife handle I will make. My first attempt at this stuff. You guys got me addicted.

If you heat the part before the brass wheel, you get much better coverage! Also how was this "sort of"? It's a damn good job. I have an antique pencil sharpener that uses a similar blade design. It sharpens better than anything made 120 years later. The blade takes a sliver off and knocks a gear that holds the pencil and rotates it for the next slice.

I think it is for cutting tobacco as well. The size of the feed tray is very similar to the width of cut tobacco for pipes, You can still get flake tobacco that is cut from a block of pressed and formed tobacco, it is in sheets that you rub between your palms to break up and load into the pipe bowl. This machine would not cut that, but flat pressed cured tobacco leaves would be a breeze for the machine, making a few ounces of any blend or style in a few seconds. I think cutting the tobacco to order would also provide a much fresher taste for smokers. I would love to know for sure what the machine is used for, herbs or tobacco .. I do not think both, because, you would not want the flavor of tobacco in tea or medicine preparations, I do not think.
