You can't take yourself too seriously, and that includes shooting with large format cameras. In today's video I'm making pictures with something right out of the recycling bin. This custom made paint can pinhole camera can make a variety of interesting photographs. All you need is some light sensitive material, a tripod, some gaffer's tape, and a whole lot of patience!

12:48 really like this tryptych; the slight imperfections along the bottom edges, the uneven way the three frames sit together, the soft tonalities and ghosting, the way the car sits across two frames and the way the right hand frame arrows off into the distance as the eye reads across to it.

Thanks for taking the time to check out the video and leave such a constructive comment on the work! I'm still amazed that this all came from a paint can with strategically placed holes.

Possible episode topic suggestion. DIY soft-focus lens for LF using a dollar store magnifying glass and a trip to home depot for some PVC pipe, black tape and a hose clamp. A hacksaw to cut a slot for waterhouse stops and some black card stock for the stops with circles cut to various aperture sizes. You could get fancy and do a work-alike Spencer Port-Land soft-focus design with the cardboard stops out near the front of the lens and the magnifying glass element at the back which would make for a nice soft-focus landscape lens configuration. Paper negatives would work well for demonstration exposures. It would be a good lock down project for some folks to take on.

Hi Mat. I believe you are supposed to place a piece of circular paper in the bottom of the van to use the anamorphic feature. It would be anamorphic because it gives s straight image, while the curved planes of the other holes produce distortion.

I built an anamorphic pinhole camera a few years ago. Here are a few hints: The camera will capture what's around the center but not what you aim it at. You'll get better results if you put it horizontally (tilt the tripod head 90°) so that you can capture both the ground and the sky. The way you were doing it you were mostly getting the sky. It doesn't work well with round things, so find some straight lines. You might want to measure it and calculate the f/stop yourself (in case Bob simply calculated the hole to film distance as the hole to bottom distance). Hope this helps.
@MatMarrash

Thanks Francois, I'll keep plugging away at it, and maybe make a dedicated anamorphic camera!

The thing with this camera is, you'll get way better results if you use a step ladder instead of a tripod.

Your pre-exposure at 8:42 had an obvious hot spot, your enlarger (?) seems to have issues that will affect all work down with it. You can see those overexposed spots in all three of the trityph images at 12:48.

Friend of mine built a 120 Anamorphic pinhole out of a coconut! Got some wild images on Velvia, definitely worth taking the time to figure it out. The distortions are very interesting when you wrap it around the inside like you did as opposed to placing it at the bottom of the can as has been suggested.
@MatMarrash
@MatMarrash 3 жыл бұрын
Okay so I wasn't completely off-base in placing it around the can? I've seen folks use round containers for this effect and was thinking that's how this one would work. While shooting, I also tried aiming the camera directly and it was looking off in a very odd direction. The experiments will continue!
@theblankcanvasfilms
@theblankcanvasfilms 3 жыл бұрын
@@MatMarrash Yes around the inside works great for panos, a lot of distortion is to be expected though, but it's part of the fun. He had good success sticking the pinhole into things like bushes and places you wouldn't normally as the field of view was so wide - have fun with it! You might have to experiment with how far away from the pinhole you place the paper, he placed it right around the pinhole end rather than at the bottom if I recall correctly. Here's one of his shots. www.flickr.com/photos/markdoxey/39927276480/

I think the issue was that you pointed the anamorphic hole staight at the sky. Extrapolating the path of the light from hole to paper, I think you only had blown out bright sky on that exposure. Normally you would point the anamorphic at an angle.

Great point about LF shooters that we sometimes can get too serious (maybe it's all the money and time we spend) but for 99% of this a hobby not a profession, so we are suppose to have fun. Thanks for the pin-hole video. I love the fact that you are really to share your mistakes and your successes. I agree with your assessment of paper negatives. I've only done it a couple of times but it was a PIA working with it. How did you convert the paper negative into a positive?
@MatMarrash
@MatMarrash 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Michael! These were simple flatbed scans as I've not done as much in the darkroom with printing paper negatives. I'm always impressed with how well paper holds highlights, even when it appears the area is blown to smithereens.

There were plenty of attempts that didn't make the final cut, several of which were aiming directly at a non-sky subject. All came out the same amount of washed out. It may be the pinhole, further testing required. Thanks!
