Marty's Matchbox Makeovers

Marty's Matchbox Makeovers

3 жыл бұрын

Today is the 15th September 2020. 80 Years ago today the Battle of Britain was fought in the sky over southern England. It was a battle that saved England from Hitler's planned invasion.To commemorate this historical event I decided to do a 'Battle of Britain' themed makeover.
Leave a comment including the code '#BOB' to be in the draw to win one of the Spitfire models on a display stand. There are 3 to win, good luck!

my dear departed Hubby (a certified Harley Davidson mechanic, as well as a British bike lover) called the nearly permanent darkened color of his fingers (from all the wrenching) "professional gray". :D

The "target" came about from WWI. Originally, British aircraft had a Union Jack as the symbols. However, this looked a lot like the German cross at a distance. The French were using their national "cockade" which came from a circular decoration worn in hats at the time of the Revolution, these were blue in the middle, white and then red on the outside. That is what is still used by the French Air Force. The British decided to copy it so from the ground "round" meant friendly, "cross" meant enemy. To differentiate the nations, the British swapped the colours, with red in the middle and blue on the outside. The yellow ring was supposed to help visibility, in the early part of the war they painted out the white and yellow with blue to improve camouflage, some did it on the side too, although it was often left in place, as in the example you have.

These days there is still a roundel but it's done in a "low viz" scheme. Generally they shoot long before you ever see the other guy nowadays.
@llewev
@llewev 3 жыл бұрын
@@theodoreolson8529 True, given the importance of long range detection measures, I do wonder what difference it would make to get the more colourful ones back. Something to do with radar-absorbent paint perhaps? The glory days of aircraft colour schemes were the German WWI Flying Circuses and the USA in the 1950's and '60s.

@@llewev My specialty was logistics. I know the maintenance guys would talk about how the low viz colors help defend against certain optical targeting systems. There was usually one bird in the squadron with a painted tail but that was typically the hangar queen.

And sadly, our latest F-35's have adopted the US habit of putting the low-viz emblem on the top of the port wing and below the starboard (WWII modifications to stop friendly fire). An appalling development - like calling our generals by "stars" ("two star", "three star) etc. But when they dominate everything our military does......

I HAPPENED to be visiting Stonehenge on a September 15th in the early 90's sharing a tour bus ride with a group from the Battle of Britain. I sat and listened as these old bag of bones began to re-animate while they reminisced, shedding the wounds of time, once again laughing as young men, hugging and even crying a bit. When we arrived, I sprung from my seat and made for the front of the bus - "Excuse me. I am compelled to say that never before has one person been so grateful for the life all of you made possible. Thank you will never be enough. Bless you all." And off I went. At 74 (Sept. 28) watching one of my favorite "KZfaqrs" pay homage to The Battle Of Britain - I Thank You...

Beautiful. Thank you for this, Marty, and let us all remember the RAF heroes. Even here across the pond, I know and remember the sacrifice of our UK and Australian and NZ brothers during the horrible times of the bombing of civilians in England. The gallantry of those special people created the conditions which allowed for the defeat of evil. God bless the RAF, the RAAF, and the RNZAF.

Thank you so much Marty for putting in this extra effort to release this video today, the 80th anniversary. There are so few of 'The Few' still alive now here in UK. And let's not forget the airmen from the Commonwealth and occupied Europe that made their way to Britain to join up with the RAF and fly, and fight (and die) alongside the young Englishmen. We all owe you so much.

Great craftsmanship. If you were in the military back then and repaired the aircrafts as well as these models now, the RAF was lucky to have a MARTY. 😁🛠️ And as a historian, I must honestly say... This programme is a wonderful tribute to the brave boys who gave everything for their country, whether they flew for the ROYAL AIR FORCE or the Luftwaffe. None of them wanted this war and most of them would have preferred to drink a beer with their opponent than to shoot at him. LEST WE FORGET Thanks for sharing this #BOB special. You, Julie and the team behind the scenes have a great week and stay healthy. Hi Marty ,small word it is for sure . The picture of the Spitfire you have for color and Markings is a MK1a , This particular aircraft I built the wings for on the Isle of Wight, Uk across from Portsmouth where the first prison ships left for Australia. The spit with no radiator is wrong the other spit with two Rad was Mklll and on , the one in the picture has one round tube radiator and one square, One Is for the coolant for the engine and the other is the oil cooler again for the engine . The spit picture, this aircraft never saw active service it crashed in early 1939 after a training flight the pilot parachute safely. The aircraft crashed into a river bank and there it stayed until the 80s . The salvaged aircraft was kept until there was a sponsored to commission the build . Build started 2009 and the aircraft was completed 2015 . The aircraft was one of two MK1a built to commemorate BOfB the spit rebuilt was salvaged from the beaches of Dunkirk. And both aircraft were in the movie Dunkirk. Thanks for your channel I played with a lot of these toys in 60s 70s . I remember having Bi planes from the same manufacturer as these spits would be nice to see them again. # BOB

Mould making RTV silicone is preferable and doesn't need a release agent but you can add corn starch to glazing silicone to make oogoo. The moisture in the corn starch helps the silicone set all the way through rather than curing from the outside in.

There's a technique used by those who restore yellowed plastic on old video game consoles..... The part is submersed in a tub of hydrogen peroxide (some wrap the tub in aluminium foil) and surrounded by a strip of UV (LED) lights and left overnight. Quite a production but works like magic, goes back to clean white. Not sure if it works on clear plastic as well. You wouldn't need a big tub for small Matchbox parts. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jdVdZpmW0bLMeGQ.html

One day when the Ottawa Air Show (YOW) was approaching a Spitfire coming in for the show had gear problems. My friend had the opportunity to work on the Spit and correct the snag. After effecting repairs he called me and we both salivated over one of the few remaining serviceable Spitfires that remained in the world at that time. Truly the sexiest war plane that ever existed. (If a war plane could be sexy.) I should mention our boss at the time (mid '80s) was 72, and cut his teeth on Lancasters while serving in the RCAF . I assume you're talking about Dunkirk. The Nazis had to pause to: 1) let their infantry divisions catch up to their armoured spearhead (most Nazi infantry divisions were non-motorised i.e. used horses). 2) To recover from the Arras counter attack. Fortunately the RAF was able to disrupt the Luftwaffe sufficiently to allow the evacuation to take place.

Great video, the transformation of the Stuka in particular was very impressive!! When I was a kid I though these models looked cheap and couldn't understand why they didn't put more effort into the finish of them.

Lovely Marty, enjoyed that. The masking pen looked more tricky than it was worth, especially given that the original planes look almost hobby painted. Many thanks, Chris.

You've paid a great tribute to those brave men and women (Let's not forget those Angels who delivered the Spitfires to the fighting squadrons, sometimes having to actually defend themselves in the process.) who flew and defended Britain. They showed the Axis who ruled the skies! #BOB

It may have taken you a week, but it was a week well spent! Even the "imperfect" one is a triumph, showcasing your talent and ingenuity. Thank you for the entertaining video and the "memory prod"..... PS lovely as these are, please do not put me in the running to receive one of these (much as I would like one!). I am already the proud possessor of an example of your amazing talents!

Excellent show. Thanks Marty. When using Silica, remember to use a little Vaseline or Petroleum Jelly on the Selected Piece. Lip Balm and Detergent also work. I really appreciate the work you do. Thank you again.

Marty, I always look forward to your projects with their new challenges. I felt like it took 5 years till the oil stopped oozing out of me from changing the oil coolers on P2 Neptunes, it was a dirty job. There are numerous KZfaq vids on mixing silicone with either dish soap or corn starch. I think the silicone caulk by itself is too sticky so it adheres to seal. There are store bought silicones for pouring or ask your Dentist if he has some old flowable silicone used for very accurate impressions. With a small plastic snap closing.box, your Dentist should get them from his dental lab used to ship crowns or bridge work and they get thrown out, make great two part molds. Pour silicone in one side with your master embedded 1/2 way and allow it to set. Do not over fill. When set spray a separating material like silicone spray ,fill the other 1/2 of the little box with your mold material and snap the box together and press to squeeze out excess. When set you will have a two part mold that is keyed together for casting resin. Great for small parts. #BOB

The eternal gravity of the message was offset by the magazine cover in the paint booth, which made me laugh out loud. The planes look very good. Cheers

Marty, what a fantastic tribute to the few young men that protected this beautiful ireland in #BOB. I'm sure you know, although a few years apart, the two most simply beautiful things to come from the 20th century were built in the same factory. The Spitfire and The E Type. BUT The Spitfire has the The E on sound (just) nothing on earth will ever sound like a MERLIN engine.. I for one THANK these brave men that flew these gorgeous aircraft AND the brave Lady's that delivered them. God bless you all....

Marty , I was having lunch yesterday with my Uncles and Aunties and I mentioned the Battle Of Britain Anniversary . He told me he saw on VE Day 1945 a Spitfire fly low down along Unley Rd Adelaide onto King William St !! He could of been only 8 years old and He still remembers that
