With this week's video, I've worked against my usual ethos of 'spicing up' a casting by making this Matchbox MB192 (Rover) Sterling markedly duller. I remove its 'My First Matchbox' brightly coloured paint scheme and return it to something much more subtle, recreating a period monochromatic executive saloon that the Rover 800 series was always meant to be!
The name on the base of this model simply says 'Sterling.' It was purposefully done as this model had a worldwide release. The Sterling nameplate was used on the Rover 800 series given to the top-of-the-range models. When the car went to North America in 1987, it was sold under the brand name Sterling. It was sold there until 1991. Meanwhile in Europe and other global markets, it was sold from 1986 and had a 1991 facelift. The 800 series ran until 1999.
The Matchbox model arrived in 1988 where it remained for just four years. It was one of the small number of models to receive the 'My First Matchbox' treatment in 1990, receiving brightly coloured paintwork and plastics, as well as tampos on almost every surface.
