@@KEYBOARDTHAWAVE your Alpha Link also has ADAT connections right? You could use RME UCX II, or Babyface Pro and use the ADAT outputs. Then you can use the SSL with Total Mix. If you ONLY have MADI connection, look at Madiface Pro or UFX.

Very useful video, I'll be returning to this. Some things still not clear though: 1. My totalmix only has dBu settings, no 'Low Gain or Hi Gain' or dBv like in this video. The inputs have only two choices - +13dBu or +19dBu. Are there settings in total mix that change the gain menus, or is this just a different version of totalmix? 2. I still don't understand whether "Low gain" refers to the signal coming in, or the amount of gain that's added. (eg.is this option chosen for 'low gain' input signals/instruments, therefore adding MORE gain in the RME, or is this option chosen for 'louder' inputs, therefore using a low gain setting in the RME)?

i love my fireface UC. i run a tr707 in my setup and with the accent turned all the way up, the kick clips a -10 input. by running it into a +4 channel, i can get all of the internal drive the machine provides. a more moderate accent setting sounds vastly different and if it wasnt for totalmix allowing this, i would be SOL.

Thank you for the very helpful and clear video! I am in the process of setting up a hybrid studio with a UFX+ and Ferrofish Pulse 16 MX (connected to the UFX+ via MADI), and plan on incorporating a lot of outboard analog hardware, so I am just at the stage of thinking about this topic. I imagine when I am connecting an analog device via the TRS inputs on the Ferrofish Pulse 16 MX I'll need to set individual input/output sensitivities for each channel in the Ferrofish Menu rather than in Total Mix FX. The Pulse 16 MX is the standard version (+20 dBu), not the +24 dBU model. Are there any additional i/o settings in Total Mix FX that I should be adjusting as well? Thank you!

This is great and all but what I want is a loopback channel that doesn't require sacrificing an input channel. The mixer is virtual. Why is this so hard.
@RMEAudio2 жыл бұрын
The channels in TotalMix FX are not virtual. They are defined by the FPGA inside the interface. Hence we cannot simply add channels :)

@@RMEAudio I admit that implementing DSP in an FPGA is slightly above my pay grade. Is it a matter of insufficient processing power? If, in theory, you had a more powerful FPGA then would the feature be possible?

The simplified answer is to set your interface to +4 and forget about it. Then on your interface adjust the input level of your mic so its peak level doesn't clip.

Thanks for the video. Questions : where are these settings options in the Babyface Pro FS interface (via Totalmix) ? Where are these specs in the manual (what numbers to look exactly, in case of the Babyface Pro FS manual, for example) ? What I can see (page 78) : Max. Input level +8 dBu (for Microphone). Max. input +13 dBu (for line Instrument). How can I find the reference level number(s) ?
@RMEAudio2 жыл бұрын
Hey Dominique, the Babyface Pro is a little bit special: The original Babyface usually operates in +4 dBu or -10 dBV BUT you can mimic the +19 dBu on the XLR inputs by activating PAD. Maximum input level will then be 11 dB higher (+19 dBu instead of +8 dBu). The Babyface Pro FS has +19 dBu for the XLR outputs as an option on the bottom of the device. I hope this helps!

Hello I have a question… So according to Fab DuPont pro tools HD converters are calibrated to equal 0 VU at -18 dbfs. It's very confusing to figure out What the UFX + is calibrated to? Monitors are set to +4 and set to +4 in total mix. If that makes any difference. I use cubase pro 12 I just want to know what avrage levels would be considered the sweet spot. For RME converters. Basically does -18 dbfs in my daw equal 0vu? essentially when recording in what is the optimal level
@tcos3322 жыл бұрын
-18, +4 = +22 dBu for Full Level UFX (example): +19 dBu for Full Level. So +4 dBu, -15 dBFS would be your sweet spot
@ReignDropsStudio2 жыл бұрын
@@tcos332 I still don’t understand how you get that information? Ugh.
@tcos3322 жыл бұрын
@@ReignDropsStudio Basically you’re dealing with headroom, as far as Peak-to-Peak amplitude of you’re wavelength. Let’s say you want to see peak levels at -12dBFS, this would therefore be leaving 12dB of Headroom. If 0 dBFS is the highest level before clipping it would happen at a level of +24dBu, +4dBu or -20dBFS. So 0 dBFS is essentially your DIGITAL level, +24dBu would your ANALOG. Thus, your sweet spot in this scenario would be -20dBFS SMPTE for Digital level, at +4 dBu for Analog. Sort of make sense, or help explain it better?
@tcos3322 жыл бұрын
@@ReignDropsStudio here’s a good way I learned just by looking at metering and more visual references. This is for the same scenario mentioned in last reply too.
