Doing math in everyday life is the best way for some to learn math. If kids don't understand WHY they need the math and HOW it applies to life, you've lost them... We don't use a curriculum, but we focus on mastering the basics. The best "curriculum" for math I ever bought is a hands-on, games and activities based approach that works on the basics and knowing the basics off by heart. This is more for our youngest, but all my kids enjoy the games etc. We don't do millions of problems, we do about 20 or so questions for the concept for the day and that's it! If they know the concept, why drill them on it, right?!

I see so many people jumping from one curriculum to the next. I started off with those workbooks for the little ones (school zone and scholastic). I tried Learn Math Fast. It was good until it just jumped into concepts. I use Strayer Upton and realize that the old school math books are just as good if not better than the new stuff. I think the best math teacher I had in high school was my geometry teacher. He taught 15 minutes and let us do homework for the rest of the class. He would grade it and off we went. I don’t think you need 1000 problems a day. You’re brave though. Those kids cds are OBNOXIOUS!! We do use games.
