I like playing Uno because all ages can play. Our library has an extensive amount of board games they lend out which is fun to try the game for a few weeks and send it back. I like mancala for a one on one game. We recently tried ticket to ride, it's a LONG game, but it ended up being pretty fun. We also have a competitive family so there are some games not allowed, Sorry is one of them 😂

We're on our home stretch of homeschooling (sadly) but my high schooler is still struggling with spelling. When you mention "spelling bootcamp" what would you recommend we use to give him confidence? He literally freezes when he has to spell a word. But his imagination is incredible so if he's writing a story, I will type it for him; I hired a tutor for the past 1.5 years and he has made great strides but still having issues. I'm willing to do what it takes to build his confidence because in his mind it's holding him back from his future with work. Thanks so much!

I know some people homeschool well, I have a genius friend i met in highschool that had been homeschooled well, but homeschooling is still dangerous because of how easily it can end up hurting people, plenty of people are conspiracy theorists who homeschool and indoctrinate their kids, same with teaching them biggotry, homeschooling also prevents them from making friends with people there age or learning how to work in a team or socialize, even if you make them go out or do a hobby or something.

Sure, kids are weird. Interesting people are weird! But also, homeschooled kids are especially weird because they lack the volume of social interaction that helps them succeed by blending in with society skillfully. And they tend to be weird because MANY of the reasons why parents choose to homeschool are because the parents are insane, which tends to rub off on the kids because they're being raised in the home asylum. If your household is religious, conservative, abusive, or at all adjacent to the conspiracy theory / survivalist / pseudoscience culture, you're doing your kids a huge disservice by homeschooling. But if that's true, you're also going to respond that you have special knowledge about reality and you need to protect your kids from learning anything outside the family unit. See above.
@jasonmzerbey
@jasonmzerbey Ай бұрын
Government isn't insane? You don't need to claim special knowledge to recognize that government requires a monopoly on violence to exist. Some of us don't want our children raised in a system predicated on force.

My kids aren't weird because they're homeschooled. They're weird because I'm their mom! They were doomed from the start! 😅 (Have you seen that meme?) We are religious and conservative, but my kids are NOT socially awkward at all. My kids are well-rounded individuals who are great at speaking and interacting with people older and younger than they are. They have plenty of friends, including non-homeschooled friends. I find this to be true of most all homeschoolers. I don't get the 'socially awkward' and 'weird' because they're homeschooled labels at all.

study after study after study says that the school choice and school quality is far less important than parental involvement in the child's life. Homeschoolers do terrible if the parents are lazy..Kids at affluent schools do terrible if parents are lazy and uninvolved. Kids in high crime areas do terrible if parents are uninvolved or contributing to the area's problems. Our kids are in public school because we live in a nicely conservative area. My wife takes them to the library every week and they fill big tote bags of books they read all week because we dont let them watch tv without us or play video games at home and for the most part neither do their friends parents. And at dinner and on outings we have good conversations about nature, science, religion, even the economy and how supply chains work like the other night.

With 25 years and five sons I can tell you we did everything. Lol. But by the last 10-15 years, we moved away from assessments and focused on our master homeschool goals. Our goals stayed constant: share our faith, make sure all knew their basic arithmetic inside and out (the stuff they’d all need), marinated them in excellent literature, and trained them to be excellent communicators on paper and in front of others. These goals guided everything we did and the boys thrived. One is a machinist with a brain for history, one is a teacher and writer, one is a master musician, one is a mathematician & scientist, and the other is studying business and is on a division 1 rowing team at university.

This is so spot on! My homeschooled son is well ahead of his peers academically but we spend more time and effort on the life skills and trying to build his executive functioning (a huge challenge), which I know will be valuable time spent for his future compared to academics. I attended an Ivy League university for a couple of years and saw college kids who were valedictorians, prep school kids, you name it, who couldn’t boil water for pasta or work a washing machine. And of course, high academic achievement transfers nothing to your relationships or sense of self and resilience. When the going get tough in life - and it always does - you’re probably not leaning on your AP Chemistry knowledge for help. And the Barbie thing, wow. When I was a preteen girl Furbies were all the rage, and I see now how and why the adults were all so disturbed by them, haha! Children should be using their imaginations and interacting with real living things, not some motherboard in China.
@BetterWay2Homeschool
@BetterWay2Homeschool Ай бұрын
It’s such a funny thing. Many times, homeschoolers will Seem behind their peers for a while. The reality is that they’re just learning different things academically than the schools are teaching- typically at a slower pace at first… …and then they spring past their peers. Not always of course, but usually. When the heart and character are given center stage, children lean into the process of learning. They’re not as concerned as the good grade as they are experiencing the lesson and mastering the concepts. On the surface, critics would same it’s the same as in the schools… …but it’s not. Those executive functions are bedrock to thriving as adults. Far too many kids (and adults) are missing them. The great news is the brain is a muscle that can be trained. I am thankful for the homeschooling life that allows us to give proper attention to these things while our children are still at home!! Thank you so much for sharing:)

Doing math in everyday life is the best way for some to learn math. If kids don't understand WHY they need the math and HOW it applies to life, you've lost them... We don't use a curriculum, but we focus on mastering the basics. The best "curriculum" for math I ever bought is a hands-on, games and activities based approach that works on the basics and knowing the basics off by heart. This is more for our youngest, but all my kids enjoy the games etc. We don't do millions of problems, we do about 20 or so questions for the concept for the day and that's it! If they know the concept, why drill them on it, right?!

I see so many people jumping from one curriculum to the next. I started off with those workbooks for the little ones (school zone and scholastic). I tried Learn Math Fast. It was good until it just jumped into concepts. I use Strayer Upton and realize that the old school math books are just as good if not better than the new stuff. I think the best math teacher I had in high school was my geometry teacher. He taught 15 minutes and let us do homework for the rest of the class. He would grade it and off we went. I don’t think you need 1000 problems a day. You’re brave though. Those kids cds are OBNOXIOUS!! We do use games.
