So glad to hear third grade is staying the same. You are the one who put me onto mwc and I was worried you changed your mind lol. Idk why that would have anything to do with us but good to know you still love it. As someone that started with RightStart, I’m hoping mwc is just as good but easier to do 😅

I love that your little guy made a model of the “Endurance”! We did a unit study on Antarctica earlier this year. Shackleton was one of our favorite people to study about, well second to my Dad, because he got stationed down there twice! My son got tired of me directing him to practice his cursive writing Shackleton’s motto “By endurance, we conquer.” I decided to have mercy and not to make him do it in Latin as well 😅.

Math is just so hard. It is one of the subjects that pretty often creates Fear of missing out. I have stuck with math for my oldest and only switched once. I have to keep my blinders on. The great thing about homeschooling you can switch things up when not working.

We did some switching with math too. I asked my 3rd grader if she wanted to do Math with Confidence, but she wanted to be independent, so she is headed to Math Mammoth with her older sister. I hope we all have a good year with math!

Yes, we struggling with picking math, too… I have four kids. My oldest two, now 18 & 17 are only 11 months apart, so they’ve been at the same math level their entire lives. If you have two kiddos close in age, and they get along well, definitely teach them math together.🎉 I started all of mine with Math-U-See. It’s a great starter/foundational program, and decimal street is something I wish I would’ve had when I was in school. BUT for us, Math-U-See got pretty boring after the first two years:( and I found my self supplementing and just teaching all of the math facts that I knew to teach. We played several math games. We then turned to Abeka for 3rd grade-6th grade for my oldest two, it can be a bit much, but a great curriculum, they just split the lessons and helped each other. However, when Pre-Algebra Abeka just wasn’t going well, we turned to Teaching Textbooks for Algebra-Geometry. It was a good enough program, but I wish I had looked into Dr. Shormann Math (I am not sure if I spelled that correctly?) I have now been hearing of this program and how beneficial it is for HS students. I have heard it is a bit intense…. We did use Khan Academy on youtube and my oldest two enjoyed those lessons. Now, with my youngest two, now 9 and just turned 11, they are decent at math, but they actually enjoy it, so I didn’t want to use Abeka with them, a little too much. This past year they have used TGATB Level 4 and have really enjoyed it! We plan to continue onto Level 5. I have yet to find anything incriminating about the program… We keep reviewing past concepts and are taking our time making sure the foundation is there before moving forward. I am definitely interested in BJU Press math, please let us know how it goes🎉 So happy you have decided on your math poa for next year, it is always nice when you can finally breathe a little better knowing it’s all lined up for next year🎉🤗 I would love to know more about the Life of Fred, too. I have heard it is a great program, but just different, and I know it can be pricy. Thank you for sharing! Have a blessed day!

Thank you For sharing your math journey!! We sounds very similar. I like to use something until it’s just not working. With my oldest We started with Right Start, then went to Masterbooks Math, then Teaching Textbooks, now Saxon and then BJU Press. Phew! I’m thankful my daughter is doing okay. She’s pretty good at catching on to math, thankfully.

We switched Math mid-year from Saxon and Nicole the Math lady. The mix practice lessons were too long for both of my children and the wording would was different from what was taught. One child does Math U See (Zeta) and the other does Christian Light Math 6. Both choices were hard to make. Thank God for Fred because that's what we used while momma figure it out...lol!

Ugh, math! I enjoy math, but have struggled finding a curriculum that each of my 3 kids enjoy or learn well from. I would LOVE a video on Life of Fred! I'm wondering if you think we could just start that series at the fractions and decimals books to get better understanding? Thank you so much!

It’s so hard to find a good math curriculum! What age are your kids right now? If your kids are older, the Life of Fred fractions book would be totally fine to start. It’s written more for middle school or high school level, just so you know. 😊

Can you explain how you use Life of Fred? I have felt like using it but wasn't sure how to combine that with their math when they have to do a lesson every day 4x a week to get through it in a year...

We just read it during morning time with all my kids. 1 chapter each time. And we only do it 2 times a week or so. The lessons only take 10 minutes. This coming year I’ll have them read a chapter on their own, 2x a week.

I have rising 3rd and 5th graders. From what I heard about it from others, I think they may both like Life with Fred for the elementary grades. I was wondering what they are like and where to buy them?

Were using Math with Confidence 1 for my first grader and finishing up Saxon 54 with the DIVE lectures. We've never used any lectures or lessons before so I'm curious to see how it goes! I enjoy hearing your choices for your older student. We just picked up a LOF book, I was thinking of using it as a family read aloud but I'd love to hear how you're older child uses it... you assign them? 😊

We’ve used LOF as a family read aloud for the last few years 😊 But now I will just assign it for my older kids to read. It really does only take a few minutes per lesson.

We did BJU 7th grade program video led and if you didn’t like Saxon I am not sure you will like this either. We switched to Teaching Textbooks and he loves it and is doing well.

Have you looked at Apologia math? I see a lot of people comparing it to math with confidence. I suspected my kid was 6 months ahead of what I was teaching and his CAT test came back and suggested he enter 4th grade math vs going into 3rd. MWC is coming out too slow for me. 😭

This is my current struggle. I own four! math curriculums and I don’t know which one to go with in the fall. We’ve used MUS for two years and I love it, but I don’t trust only using MUS and the narrowed in focus by year. We’ve done Saxon, which my kid loved, but only retained half of. We tried Rod and Staff, which was super easy, but also seemed thorough. And we are currently onto MWC, which I personally have a hard time understanding since I didn’t learn conceptual math myself. How do you make peace with knowing there’s no perfect program? Oy.

I don't know!!! I wish I knew how to really make peace with there not being a perfect curriculum. I have been struggling with this still for my oldest. She's almost done with her Saxon Math 7/6 now and then I'm going to ask her for her input on what she can use next. I have a couple options, and I'm a little nervous about the BJU math I picked for her. I do think I've landed on what she'll do for algebra though!!!

We are using "Math Lessons for a Living Education" and Easy Peasy all-in-one's math. We have been doing this combo pretty much since the beginning. Why change what is working?

Love your picks! Is there a reason you didnt pick Teaching Textbooks for your 7th grader? Asking because Im thinking of outsourcing Math from 3rd grade all the way to the end of highschool using TT 😊 I am the same, I can not explain Math for the life of me!

That’s a good question! I didn’t think TT worked well for my oldest. I had considered going back to it for her again, but still just didn’t love it for her. I think the problem was she was in a level to low for her at the time and she needed more of a challenge.

We are using Math u see and I want to add beast academy not quite for math but logic and thinking skills. I'm waiting on the budget to get the practice books for A2 and B2 there "lesson" books I got off thriftbooks. We tried GATB but it was to much for me too teach and check if I needed to edit out evil content.
