This was so helpful. Your flip through with all of your commentary has helped me make up my mind in purchasing not just Math Mammoth, but the Grade 1 book and not grade 2! Concepts are much better explained than with our current curriculum

I'm a Homeschool Education Specialist with a charter school in my state and this is precisely what I needed! Parents have countless curriculums to choose from and it's nice when I can have a video walkthrough of a curriculum in this great detail that they can view prior to spending their instructional funds on a curriculum. Hi Tanya! 😃🖐 How have you been, Girl?! I'm researching Math Mammoth to see if it's a good fit for us to add to our resources and to see if it would work for my grandson. As always, you do a great job showing us all the important details. You and I just click. You go over exactly what I'm wondering. Have a fantastic homeschool week! ❤ from VA.

This was so helpful! Trying to decide between MUS and MM for my first grader. I love MUS but it is definitely missing some topics outside of math facts. I’m curious to know if you’ve used MUS in the past and how you think it compares to this curriculum as far as a solid grip on math facts.

I tried to use it one year and enjoyed the manipulative part of it, but it grew monotonous pretty quickly. We still use the blocks all the time, though.

Thank you for your review! Can you do a comparison of Singapore and this and why you like this over that program?
@ProjectHappyHome
@ProjectHappyHome 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, we used Singapore for Grades 1-2 for my eldest, and the only reason we switched was because he wanted a change of format (out of boredom more than any specific problem with the curriculum). One huge benefit of MM is the cost - it is far less expensive than Singapore while still teaching mental math and providing a plethora of games/extension ideas (in addition to videos). We recently switched back to Singapore 2022 for my middle child because she wanted a change of format from MM. Both are great choices!

Thank you so much for the in-depth look at the books and explaining the different sections! Math Mammoth looks like exactly what my daughter needs, I was wondering did you ever feel the need to bring in manipulatives to help out with the instruction? My daughter likes hands on math, she loves math in general and I want to keep her loving it. These books look very engaging.
@ProjectHappyHome

Hi! The curriculum has several suggested games using simple manipulatives like dice, counting sticks/counters, and cards. Honestly, the most useful math manipulatives for us were plastic cups, an abacus, a sturdy play clock, a deck of cards, and mini-erasers (or pompoms or beans) for counters.

Hi! I'm very new to homeschooling and I thank you for this review! I'm wondering if the books help you with ways to teach your kids? I didn't see much instruction in the books and while I understand basic elementary math, I'm not as confident that I know how to teach it.

I use a variety of math curricula for supplement, including Teaching Textbooks and Abeka for review and Mathematical Reasoning (Critical Thinking Co) for real-world applications and pre-algebraic/geometric problems. For my eldest, we supplement with Challenging Word Problems from Singapore Math as well.

Hi there! My son will be 7 in December. He loves math and is very good at it. We've used numerous different math books and he zooms through them. Currently I have Saxon 1, but I think we're both very bored by it. He learns so well that the repetition gets annoying. I used Saxon when I was growing up and loved it, but I am slow at math even if it is one of my favorite subjects. I don't want him to feel weighed down by repetition, but I don't want to miss important skills. He already knows how to do analog and digital clocks, addition, subtraction (including negative numbers), and is branching into multiplication and division. However, some of the information and skills available in the book you showed in this video we haven't exactly done that. Should I get Grade 1 and just have him skim through until we hit something new? Or should I just go ahead and get Grade 2?
@ProjectHappyHome
@ProjectHappyHome 3 жыл бұрын
There are sample on the website, so I would look and see. Another option is to buy the focused topic area books for the concepts he hasn’t done yet and buy Grade 2 for the base.

At one point weren’t y’all using Beast Academy? I’d be interested in a comparison or why you are/aren’t using BA any longer. We’ve used MM in the past (grades 2 and 4).
@ProjectHappyHome
@ProjectHappyHome 4 жыл бұрын
We actually did not use BA longer than a couple of weeks, as I mentioned in one of our homeschool updates. My son didn’t like the “bait-and-switch” of cartoons that were about math instead of jokes. Lol! I think it is a great program for kids who excel at math and enjoy the mental gymnastics of problem solving. My son is more literature-oriented, so it was a chore for him rather than a pleasure.

At this age, I use a lot of manipulatives to help them visualize the math operations. Once I taught her how to use the abacus and counting items, she’s been able to progress rapidly largely on her own. But I regard math as a teacher intensive subject in elementary especially, so I’m always there to help her along.

We have MUS and am completing primer this week. I bought alpha and we do like MUS but I am very interested in MM (I just purchased level 1 but have not recieved). I plan on trying both as Math is so important. What I have heard 'round MM groups, is that if they understand the concepts you dont have to do every problem- maybe every other one. But I notice you seem to do all of them. How long does it take your 1rst grade to do 2-4 pages of Math? It seems like it would be a lot of time. And my little just turned 5.. although her attention span is pretty good.
@ProjectHappyHome
@ProjectHappyHome 3 жыл бұрын
The work isn't distributed evenly across the various pages in my opinion. We generally do all the problems on a page, but I tend to change up the amount we do depending on the difficulty/attention span. She will generally do 2 pages at a time, but I like to work up to 4 pages at a time by 2nd-3rd grade.
