it always seemed to me that Orion's RP was a classic case of the player saying to the group "it's what my character would do" and then behaving in ways that made the group (particularly the female cast members) very uncomfortable. but Travis, Sam and Matt all had major issues with him. people need to remember that Orion was playing Tiberius for 2-3 years before the stream started, so he couldn't have been THAT unpleasant. this clip shows that he was trying to play a forceful, very intelligent character with very low Wis and therefore unaware of how he came across to other characters. sometimes this was funny as here. later, it became really obnoxious. I think, as others have suggested, that Orion thought he was the best known member of the cast on Geek and Sundry when CR started and thought he was the central character in the show
@ArthurRex1312 жыл бұрын
@@rantdmc It wasn't until after the stream started that his issues reared their ugly heads. Clearly they were able to get along with him pre-stream, so I'm betting his cancer diagnosis plus everything else is what created the fallout.

But as others stated i understand that it's rude to ask for a trade via the DM prior to this when the other player is not present on that day. Well, in our universe we know what Calories are, how much an average person uses in a day, can calculate a calorie cost for certain actions, and how many calories you take in from various foods, which seems a bit 'gamey' when you think about it. It's not too far to think that somewhere in ages past old wizards tried to quantify the difference between wizarding spellcasting and what sorcerers do and came up with the idea of 'sorcerer points' to explain it. See this moment need some background. I found this funny originally but going back and rewatching the series this is the third time he’s asked the first time Sam wasn’t even present he tried to get matt to give it to him without Sam being there and claimed he didn’t need the card Sam had explaining the ability. Then he asked and Sam said no. That’s when he decided to do this and I’m not sure if he was being funny or condescending anymore because he wanted it and was being told no constantly. Like with allura after they rescued Kima and he thought allura and him were flirting so he slammed his hands on the table and threw a tantrum when matt made reference to kima and allura having a past together this scene probably would have had a similar outcome if Sam didn’t agree. I did like him though it sucked he had to leave but honestly if you go back and rewatch knowing he was purposefully meta gaming, continuously making plans without consulting the group and then getting mad when they didn’t follow along, showboating and trying to “win” all the fights even if it was a sleeping old lady that he brutally destroyed, talking about his “half chub” when his character got aroused which I don’t think I’ve seen Travis that mad before or insulting fan made work that resulted in Travis stepping in to defend the fan who made the shirt on stream it makes it a lot easier in hindsight to see how problematic he was and how it was ruining the game for everyone including himself. I hope he actually got the help he needed cause I know he did have a lot of stuff going on outside of the show which is understandable but dnd isn’t about “winning” at least not for this crew. It’s about the experiencing and fun and connections they make with characters that only exist in everyone’s imagination. Oh yeah! Almost forget he also decided he should wear a flamethrower made by a fan on set multiple times which is already not safe but it really didnt bode well when Tiberius was most reliably known for throwing fireballs to close and injuring his friends and now Orion is walking around with a home made device filled with ignition fluid in a game that involves a ton of hand movement

Travis is usually always up for a laugh and a bit of shenanigans and is generally a chill dude, so when you've worn his patience thin, you know you probably done fucked up. The shopping spree episode towards the end of Orion's time on the show was running so long that Travis at one point intervened and said, and I'm paraphrasing here: 'Alright, buddy, your turn's been long enough now. You're done.' To which Orion responded with: 'Oh, alright. Just one last thing, then.' And Travis came at him again with a: 'No. No last thing. You're done.' Although Matt did allow him to do his last thing. Even the chat was getting very annoyed with him, asking him to end his turn already and let the other players have a go.
@Lucifronz10 ай бұрын
It is slightly humorous, but in a "he only half-realizes he's being condescending" kind of way. A lot of the early bits with Scanlan and Tiberius arguing were directly due to Sam being easy-going, yet easily irritated by Orion's behavior. There were more than a few tense moments just because Orion always had to be the smartest person in the room. He wanted his character to be the most powerful, the most intelligent, the wisest and the best equipped. That alone isn't a problem, everyone wants their character to be great, but he overdid it and made it really difficult for everyone else to shine because he wanted to be not just a great party member, but *the* great party member. I don't doubt he also considered himself the leader of Vox Machina, because he just genuinely was that arrogant. I liked Orion when he wasn't being a twat. He was a fairly funny guy and you can see why the others put up with him for as long as they did... but it only became clearer the longer the campaign went on for everyone to see that he was becoming progressively more and more of an entitled dick. Focusing *solely* on his behavior as a player and not on his behavior as a human being outside of Critical Role, he eventually *had* to go because he was being more and more disrespectful and causing more and more friction with the group. I have never been on the hate-train for Orion like so many whiny fans were, as I caught up on the videos I would see so many lazy attempts to brand him as a villain just for not being perfect and it irritated the _fuck_ out of me, but even I know that Orion had to go once he started making the group visibly uncomfortable (such as the time he made an awkward joke that made Laura uncomfortable and Travis quietly seethe). While everyone had the respect and restraint to put up with his behavior, I doubt anyone would blame them for losing their temper and just telling him to get the fuck out by that point.
@Lucifronz10 ай бұрын
@@Xylarxcode I'd argue it's the fact that *Sam* never seemed to get along with him that was the biggest indicator that he didn't fit in. Sam doesn't really have a problem with anyone and is always lightening the mood, so when he seems agitated by Orion's constant bullshittery, it's clearly getting to be too much for everyone in the group.

The best part of this for me is that an item that stores 3 spell levels seems so much more useful than an item that lets you keep concentrating on a spell for two more rounds after you start a new concentration spell, so this trade seems really in Scanlan's favour. Yeah, the circlet has some uses, but I feel like they're pretty niche uses. And the best part about the Ioun Stone is that anyone can cast a spell into it (they don't even have to be attuned while they do it, you only have to be attuned to get the spell back out), so they could've been walking around with an emergency Revivify after Pike left if they had realised it.

@@animewarrior3 What is Tiberius as a character aside from jokes? “I’m Tiberius Stormwind from Dracconia! Ah yes haha I use spell to make fart noise!” Which that’s fine. There can be joke characters. But there’s no depth there. This becomes increasingly apparent as the show continues. He tries to just steal other characters traits because he has none of his own. He tries to one up Percy by out gadget-ing him “Yes Matt, I’d like 1,000 mirrors please”. He tries to out rouge Vax by building the (old lady slaughtering) triple throwing dagger. +Gergely Takács If Zahra continues as a recurring character, she'll make a good occasional replacement; while differently-skilled, she has strong mind-altering magic and can lay a steady level of whoop-ass. And now that Keyleth can tree-port, that makes up for at least one "hole" in their previous mystical repertoire.
@VandheerOfKazaarn8 жыл бұрын
+tideoftime well, yea, I'm watching part 43 now, and I really would like it if Zahra became a fulltime member. By the way, I meant that Keyleth, and correct me if I'm wrong, uses divine magic in the majority, and only Tiberius used Arcane magics, which, as insufferable as he was sometimes, made him a rather useful "asset" for the team. Even if Zahra is differently kitted than Tibs, a great hole indeed would be filled in the needs of Vox Machina
@tideoftime8 жыл бұрын
Gergely Takács Well, Keyleth using divine magic and Tiberius using arcane magic is a tomayto, tomahto situation: the specifics may be different (Keyleth has to prepare most all of her magic, and she is more nature/elemental-based, while Tiberius could use the magic he knows more-or-less at will), but they are balanced. Tiberius being a sorcerer vs. a wizard means that his range of magic (while potent) isn't that great; he's good at what he does, but he doesn't have the flexibility that, for example, Keyleth does. He could do what he does, specifically, more reliably/dependably than Keyleth, but she has a far greater range of magics available to her than he does... again, tomayto, tomahto. The "hole" that was essentially critical to the group was the ability to teleport. While Tiberius is better at that than Keyleth, her having the ability to (albeit limitedly) tree-port helps towards making up for that. Couple that with Scanlan's magic and Zahra's occasional help, and Tiberius' "cannon" status isn't as much of a hole to fill as one might think. (It's more so that his personality/quirky mannerisms are what is missing, less so his magic, in terms of the game-play.) Honestly, Pike's frequent absence is more detrimental than Tiberius' leaving -- her ability to heal others in the middle of battle, fight via weapon or magic, and (as would have been useful in several episodes) repel the undead is more a missing element that the rest of the group can't as readily compensate for: Keyleth's healing magic must be prepared ahead, Scanlan's healing is very limited, and Vex's (while better than Scanlan's) is similarly limited, and none of them can readily cast restoration or similar with the ease that Pike can. Zahra, conceptually, easily compensates for Tiberius (if, again, via a different methodology -- warlock vs. sorcerer), and as cited the others can at least "bandage" the aspects that are missing from Tiberius leaving; the clerical aspects, not so much.

Can anyone explain to me what happened with Orion? As in how he was a bad player? I just finished campaign one. Before I jumped in, I did a fair amount of research about where to start with the show and came across many people advising to start around episode mid 20’s once he left, but I chose not to and started from episode 1. The entire time I was paying extra attention to his character to figure out why people disliked him and I was wholly unsuccessful. In fact, I genuinely missed his character once he was gone, and developed a rather unhealthy annoyance with the character of Keylith instead. Albeit, I listened to the show on Spotify while at work. Therefore I missed, entirely, the physicality of the show, which may have been a big portion of the audience’s disdain for him. I only learned how much you actually DO miss by only listening to the show when watching the campaign 1 wrap up on Talks Machina. In the wrap up they talked about scanlans 9th level spell situation, and because I only listened to the finale, I ENTIRELY missed it. I went back and watched that moment over and over and cried like a snotty baby. That emotion 100000% did not come through in the audio format. So who knows what else could have been left on the table for me.

So, with no context, this part of the episode can be funny, and the first time I saw it I thought so too. However, knowing everything that happened with Orion, what led to him leaving, and the item in question, it's suddenly not so funny and mean spirited. Especially when you find out that he had not only pestered Sam for this item for several sessions, but one of the sessions that Tiberius asks Scanlan to trade this item, he does it while Sam's not there and Matt is playing Scanlan instead. It doesn't matter if Scanlan doesn't get as much use out of the item, the point is that he's said no, the item belongs to him, and trying to trade an item with a character while the player is gone is a shitty thing to do.

I miss Tiberius and what he contributed to the group's dynamic. I do not miss Orion, and his constant, annoying power gaming.
@tideoftime8 жыл бұрын
+MajorRoe I think that in Orion's case it's more a question of the setting/system -- he'd likely be more happy, contextually, playing something like Mage: the Ascension (or Awakening) or, for even more powerful, relative to the other settings, system, Dark Ages: Mage. Even at its loosest, DnD has never had a properly flexible magic system, which the cited systems do have (along with a both narrative-and-gaming-level balance that helps the GM keep things in check, as needed, to counter-point the power and spontaneous spell-creation that those systems offer). It's less a case of Orion not being "manageable", so to speak, but more so that he wants to play in a setting where the metaphysics *aren't* like DnD's but rather more properly flexible and creative/expressive... whether he consciously realizes it or not.... Just saying....
@alexroberts18368 жыл бұрын
+tideoftime I think he doesnt mean power gaming in a sense like creating new spells/enchantments. And more like in, oh hey yeah I would like to call for an Army because of my backround. Which was the annoying part of his playstyle. I think nobody had something against him trying to use his class in a creative way, it was just his abusing of his backround. Majorcase was him trying to get an Army from his father to fight the briarwoods.. Another example would be when they went into the underworld and fought their first beholder, where he contacted his brother for knowledge. And I dont even want to imagine the other Artifacts he searched for.
@tideoftime8 жыл бұрын
***** Those are valid citations, as well; however, he also did a fair amount of powergaming in the conventional sense, as well. Matt often enough had to reel him back in when he would try to push things too far; Matt was also perhaps a bit too trusting in some regards. Examples: Orion "forgetting" how stored spell-levels worked, or how his jewel would only *briefly* allow for dual-concentration spells; his flat-out lying to Matt about whether or not his telekinesis would be strong enough (in the illithyd/beholder adventure) to carry the number of people plus base-weight of the improvised platform that were indicated (Orion's math was off by *several* hundred pounds... and there was no "Oh, I'm bad with math" that would rationalize that -- Orion lied, period, and Matt was trusting enough not to double check his figures; it isn't a case of powergaming at that point, but rather of being able to trust the person sitting across the table from you). There are other examples as well but those above provide the gist of stuff that Orion would often try to get away with. More to the point, however, it wasn't about the stats/what-have-you, as such, but rather that the levels of DnD that they were playing simply weren't where he, Orion, was really trying to "game at", as it were. He was really seeming to want to game at around 5+ levels higher or barring that play in a system that is faster/looser than DnD has ever been (he'd likely be more in-sync with how Mage: the Ascension, particularly its Dark Ages setting wherein things like mystical Paradox weren't an issue, usually runs; but that's a separate conversation altogether). But that's all moot now, isn't it? CR is chugging along nicely and Orion (hopefully) is feeling more in-sync with his projects relative to his leaving the show. >shrugs

And looking at their character sheets from www.critrolestats.com/pcstats-wm at level 2, Beau had no 18s. She had a 17 and put the +1 from her racial into Dex. Fjord did manage to get a single 18. Caleb got a 17 with a +1 from his racial, Nott got a 17 with a +2 from her racial, and Jester only has 17s. Out of all of them there was only one single rolled 18 and it was alongside a 7 and a 9. I've only recently gotten what seems like a straight answer from folks on the twitter-verse. I can't vouch 100% for the veracity of their statements, but it makes a lot of sense/smooths over a lot of contradictions in Matt and Orion's narratives of what happened. Matt Mercer has a tendency these days to occasionally retweet fans' strong criticism of Orion's personality/habits/etc. (before undoing it shortly thereafter). After Matt did something like this on twitter a couple weeks ago (retweeting a response to Orion's video that criticized him rather sharply), a fan went on to explain a situation involving Orion and abuse of a former partner. Won't get into it 100%, but it seems like that would explain the animosity that appears to exist between them. It seems like Matt is trying to be respectful about things by not airing Orion's dirty laundry publicly, but it also appears that Orion might have done something that directly led to his dismissal.

I will be honest, this is painful to watch. I feel Orion wanted to be an the arrogant, over confident jerk type of character (like Alucard from Hellsing ultimate abridged or Vegeta from Team Four star), but that character type doesn't translate well in TTRPG games because although the audience likes them, the other characters don't and in a TTRPG, the other characters are the other players. @@dragonfire7354 Yeah, while campaign one was happening everyone was ragging on the Keyleth hate but in truth it was very deserved. She was the dumbest and most myopic character to ever have such a high Wisdom score, and don't even get me started on her attempts to be "the moral center"/"inspiring leader" of the group because she failed every time. And unlike what the Keyleth-fans liked to say, this criticism was completely valid for the character -- Marisha's new character, Beau, is great and she plays her really well. Watching old clips of her from the first campaign now is pure cringe.
