In this lesson, we learn how to solve problems that involve falling objects due the the acceleration of gravity. We use the same equations of motion as before for the constant acceleration problems. However, the acceleration that we use is denoted "g" and is the acceleration due to gravity.
Because of this, the motion is purely in the y-direction, which is vertical. Other than these small changes, the problems are solved in a similar way as done previously.

I wish you were my teacher. you explain everything so well. I am actually understanding what you teach. I still have problems analysing the equations and solving them, nothing that a bit of practise won't solve. thank you for making this page.

I'll be using your physics principles for determining forces acting on safety harnesses in my own videos. I just needed a refresher. As a scaffolder, I find it important to know these principles and use WEIGHT and MASS, when free falling wearing a safety harness

Thank you for posting this, I just discovered your channel and it’s just gold. I know that you’re selling video courses. When I had enough money I’ll make sure to buy them. I’m big supporter of “free education” but the work you’re doing is important and it deserves to be paid.

@@MathAndScience WHY E=MC2 IS NECESSARILY AND CLEARLY F=MA ON BALANCE: Energy has/involves GRAVITY, AND ENERGY has/involves inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE. C4 is the proof of the fact that E=mc2 IS F=ma ON BALANCE. This explains the fourth dimension. TIME is NECESSARILY possible/potential AND actual IN BALANCE, AS E=MC2 IS F=MA ON BALANCE; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity !!! The stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky. E=MC2 IS F=ma. ("Mass"/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity.) The EARTH/ground AND what is THE SUN are CLEARLY (on balance) E=MC2 AS F=ma. TIME dilation ULTIMATELY proves ON BALANCE that E=MC2 IS F=ma IN BALANCE, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity !!! (Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy.) The sky is blue, AND THE EARTH is ALSO BLUE. The stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky. E=MC2 IS F=ma ON BALANCE. Great !!! This NECESSARILY represents, INVOLVES, AND DESCRIBES what is possible/potential AND actual IN BALANCE, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity. GRAVITATIONAL force/ENERGY IS proportional to (or BALANCED with/as) inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE, AS E=MC2 IS F=ma; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. Gravity/acceleration involves BALANCED inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE, AS E=MC2 IS F=ma ON BALANCE; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity !!! It all CLEARLY makes perfect sense. BALANCE AND completeness go hand in hand. By Frank DiMeglio

Sir, I have a question. In using the acceleration due to gravity, does the sign always depend on the direction of the object? For example, if the object moves downward, use (+9.8) and if it moves upward use (-9.8). Or if the formula already uses positive, you could use -9.8 and vice versa?

no down is negative look at a x/y chart at origin it's zero zero so down Y is negative, and up is positive [and left is neg. X while right is Pos. X so gravity/is down; so negative. Planets may vary in the magnitude but down is neg. and up is positive; this guy is excellent

Thanks so much for your time and effort ! A question : If gravity is because of curb. of space-time and there is no Force to grab things so why after realesing an objct from a distance above Earth it falls Down towards the center of Earth no mater where on Earth it is dropped and why after casting an object opwards then it Will not stand still when it reaches the highest point when velocity becomes zero ? Thanks !

2:03 I think it should be +9.8 because the object is not moving against gravity but if it went up it would be - 9.8

How do you aply this to gravity with respect to starting distance to find the velocity at the ending destance. This equasion should not include time, just distance from object. I can not use the equasion “square root of 2gh” because that is implying that the stringth of gravity is constant and does not change with respect to distance so that equasion does not work for me.

When you throw an object directly down from a specific height rather than dropping it, will the initial velocity still be equal to 0?
@MathAndScience
@MathAndScience 2 жыл бұрын
When you throw something the initial velocity won’t be zero. It will be whatever speed the object had when it immediately left your hand.

how do you account for the increasing strength of gravity as the falling objects distance to the reference object decreases?
@natureboy1961
@natureboy1961 2 жыл бұрын
its a constant acceleration and not a constant velocity, the reason its constant acceleration is because distance to the reference object is decreasing, so the closer it gets the faster it goes, so it would be accounted for in this equation, that's my guess.

Sir, I would be very grateful if you answer this question: How is that a object accelerating at a speed of 9.8m/s but just covering 4.9m? And what does it mean by s/s(per second per second)? I am having a lot of trouble with this questions.So please kindly reply,Sir.
@kimarano9790
@kimarano9790 4 жыл бұрын
I think because the acceleration is -9.8m/s², so the distance covered in 1 second is just half of the acceleration
@nerderspree
@nerderspree 2 жыл бұрын
2 years late, but the reason is that it only reaches the speed 9.8 m/s at the 1 second mark. You can't travel 9.8 meters in the first second if your speed is less than 9.8 m/s for the entirety of that second. Remember, its speed is increasing from 0. So, as math would have it, the distance reached over the course of the first second is 1/2 that of the speed reached by the end of that second due to acceleration.

None of this explains why the effects of bouyancy ceases to exist in freefall. Gas within a liquid will always go in the direction of acceleration. It doesn't, it freezes in freefall, telling us that there is no force involved in the downward vector.

Very good explanations but it would be nice if you stated gravitational acceleration with the proper units. Instead of citing gravitational acceleration as -9.8, it would be better if you included the proper units of meters/s^2. So it should look like g = -9.8 meters/s^2.

My teacher honestly has an introduction video that says she doesn't explain things well so there are plenty of things on youtube. She just hands out homework and if you have a question she refers you the policies and procedures. I will no longer call her doctor but instructor.
