What’s the movie Matilda about?
Young genius Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson from Mrs. Doubtfire) is regularly neglected and mistreated by her parents and her older brother. At school, she discovers the harsh punishments that Miss Trunchbull (Pamela Ferris), the tyrannical principal, inflicts on students, while her teacher, Miss Honey (Embeth Jean Davidtz), becomes attached to Matilda because of her intelligence. Honey demands that Matilda be promoted to a higher class, but Trunchbull refuses. Miss Honey tells the Wormwoods about their daughter's genius but they ignore her while Matilda discovers that her father, Harry (Danny De Vito from Batman Returns), is under FBI surveillance. Her parents refuse to believe her. Matilda exercises her telekinetic power by making objects fly in the house and thwarting FBI agents who threaten to put her in an orphanage. She goes to Trunchbull's house to try to scare her with her power, but the director discovers her presence. The next day, Matilda reveals her powers to Honey, but Trunchbull goes to the classroom to get Matilda to confess. Trunchbull ends up leaving school for good. The FBI having discovered enough evidence to bring Harry down, the Wormwoods must flee to Guam. They want to get Matilda back from Honey's house but she refuses to follow them and asks to be adopted by Honey. They eventually agree and Matilda lives happily with Honey, who then becomes the new director of Crunchem Hall.

It's not any darker then a child of that time period back talking their parents and getting spanked. I remember giving my mother grief in a grocery store and she paddled me hard enough that I couldn't sit. He'll it was common place to hear a mother say just wait till your father gets home. No offense if you're younger but disciplining children was different then it is now. Not to mention this movie literally has a character throwing kids through windows, choking them and all sorts of craziness. This threat was light in comparison.

Fun fact When the time came to record this scene, Mara Wilson (Matildas actress), was nervous about having to dance on the table. Que Danny Devito (Matildas father) stating that the problem was "your having to dance alone". So when Matilda is dancing in this scene, the rest of the cast is actually also dancing of screen along with her

From what I've heard, Danny DiVito was an amazing actor as a terrible dad, but off camera he was extremely supportive and nurturing of her. Hard to believe as he pulls off being an asshole so well!

The flow of this movie is absolutely perfect. I love how the scenes shift quickly between Matilda struggling to use her powers, figuring them out and then being able to use them effortlessly, and then to her first opportunity to really use them to effect change in her life (the scene right after this where Matilda is able to snatch the video tape from the FBI agents)

I can relate to this scene because the mean things people say or do give you more power than the nice things people say or do. I have autism spectrum disorders and when you have a disability people tend to be overly nice and overly helpful to you based on perceptions of pity and that's disempowering. It's hard to be assertive and speak your mind when that happens. Matilda has a laundry list of memories of all the mean things people have said and done to her and about her which gives her the key to her power just like Kevin from "Home Alone" when he remembers all the mean things his family has said to him before they left for Paris without him. Matilda's father, mother, brother, and principal have said some of the meanest things to her just like Kevin's mother, brother, sister, and uncle. When people are mean to you or bullying you, it gives you a reason to put them in their places and gain your peace of mind.

Hilariously enough, in the book, Matilda actually did once trick her family into thinking that their house was haunted. This was out of revenge for her father ripping up her library book. Matilda went to visit her friend and neighbor, Fred, and asked to borrow his pet parrot, Chopper (named after Roald Dahl’s dog). When Matilda brought Chopper home, she shoved his cage up the chimney, and when her family was eating dinner and watching TV, Chopper started talking, and they thought that a burglar had gotten into the house, but after finding no burglar, but still hearing voices, they thought it was a ghost, and ran out the front door. The next day, Matilda took Chopper home to Fred.

@@fishyfish6510 No. Matilda was the Wormwoods' natural born daughter. They had no real interest in having a second child as her brother is around 12 and didn't need as much from their parents as Matilda did.
