M109A6 Paladin 155 mm self-propelled howitzer is a further upgrade of the M109 self-propelled howitzer, which was introduced in early 1960s. This M109A6 Paladin self-propelled howitzer entered service with the US Army in 1991. Production ceased in 1999. A total of 950 artillery systems were built for the US Army. Export operators are Israel and Taiwan. With the cancellation of Crusader and NLOS-C programmes the US Army will continue to rely on the M109A6 Paladin artillery system, until it will be upgraded to the M109A7 standard.
The M109A6 has a larger turret than its predecessor. It is armed with the M284 155mm/L39 howitzer, fitted with a semi-automatic loading system. Maximum range of fire is 24 km with standard projectiles and 30 km with rocket-assisted projectiles. Maximum rate of fire is 4 rounds per minute. Sustained rate is one round every three minutes.
Some of the US Army M109A6 Paladins are being fitted with modification kits to fire M982 Excalibur extended-range precision guided projectiles. The Excalibur has a maximum range of 40 km.
The Paladin can stop and fire the first round in under 60 seconds. Brief redeployment time allows to avoid counter-battery fire and gives shoot-and-scoot capability.
Secondary armament consists of a roof-mounted 12.7 mm machine gun. Some vehicles were fitted with 40 mm automatic grenade launcher in place of machine gun.
The M109A6 is fitted with an automatic fire control system with an integrated navigation and inertial positioning system. It is also fitted with a muzzle reference system.
Armor of the M109A6 Paladin provides protection against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. Vehicle is fitted with NBC protection system. Turret is fitted with Kevlar anti-spall lining.
Vehicle is powered by the Detroit Diesel 8V71T diesel engine, developing 440 hp. Some Paladins will be upgraded with a Cummins 600 hp diesel engine.
The M109A6 Paladin is supported by the M992 ammunition supply vehicle. It can carry a maximum of 93 rounds and transfer them to the self-propelled howitzer via conveyer.
Hope you enjoy!

I love the fact that they find it necessary to put it on something that already fires 40 kilo lumps of fiery splintery death and is never close enough to the enemy to shoot at it with a 12.7 mm machine gun.

Growing up as a kid in Germany in the 80's...one time we were doing a charity car wash in Churchill Barracks (Lippstadt) and after a shed load of cars were done, a M109 from 49 Rgt RA turned up. Was quite a picture seeing a load of Scouts clambering over that beast with soapy sponges. LOL Great times back then. (Even as a teenager)

Hey Max, I was in 49 Rgt RA in Lippstadt from 89 to 92 . Good times and we still had the M109's then. Matsimus, you didn't mention that the M109 also had nuclear capability, perhaps you wasn't aware. The idea was to fire the nuclear round and jump in a landrover and bugger off quickly leaving the gun behind as it would be in the fall out zone.

Hey Matsimus, just a couple small details you got wrong. The gun only has a on board crew of four. Section chief, gunner, driver, and what the arty calls the number one man. All ammo handlers ride in the CAT, and do not enter the gun during firing. Also, there is no rear turret ammo door. The turret bustle is were the powder charges for the rounds is carried. The only rounds above the turret ring are the six ready rounds, behind the breach. The NBC system is a older over pressure model. The gun crew would still need to wear their chemical suits, and masks, but the system blows clean air into your MOPP gear. It was great on hot days. Overall a great vid. And it was great to see my old howitzer slinging rounds. Looking forward to seeing more in the future.

US Army had for a long time avoided auto-loaders because of a strong belief in Murphy's Law. The Crusader, a SPH that was supposed to replace the Paladin was supposed to have an auto-loader that would allow a single tube to fire and adjust 3 rounds so they hit time-on-target. Unfortunately, our politicians decided that the Crusader was not going to be needed due to the collapse of the USSR, so we are still using a design from Vietman. With accurate meteorological data, combined with data from multiple sensors on the gun, an M109A6 is often accurate with in 10m of target on first shot. However we rarely fire less than a platoon of 3 guns on an infantry or armored target. Other than HE with impact, timed or radar fuses, as well as a combination of fuse and fins that make it a lader guided shell, we have variety of rounds that can be fired. Basics such as Smoke, Flare, and Chemical. The more exotic scatterable mine field, and a variety of other submunition rounds, and to really reach and touch some one the Rocket Assisted Projectile. I was a FDC specislist in a Paladin Battery for a couple of years it was fun. oh, although I've never seen one in person I was able to look at the weight and firing data for one of the older 155mm tactical nuclear rounds, which the Paladin is capable of firing. Not sure if the US Army even has these in inventory any more, or if one was ever test fired, as even at max range the firing unit was considered danger close.

The W48 Nuclear Projectile (and the W79 8") was phased out in 1992 by the INF treaty. I had just started in the "Special Weapons Section" of my unit (4/92) when they ended our mission. They were VERY long in the tooth (just like Russia's rounds) and it was just "for show" when we agreed to remove them (they were nearing the end of their serviceable lifespan anyway). Tomahawks were more powerful, longer ranged, more accurate, and ships and subs were more survivable.

@@AflacMan13 No, I don't think the W48 Wasn't "practically" tested (it's been decades since I was in Special Weapons). It was simply a follow-on of the W33 which WAS tested before the US signed the Test Ban Treaty. Since the W48 was essentially an "improved W33," which was already proven reliable, they never actually detonated a W48 to my knowledge. There were "non-detonation" "stress tests" of the warheads though.

In my youth in 1972 serving in the R.A.F. at Boscombe Down I had the chance to attend demonstration of fire power at Larkhill. It was very impressive with the firing of a Honest John missile ,military bands and static displays. But the star of the show was the M109 which Fired a round at a distant target at high elevation and then fired again at a lower elevation. Both rounds hit the target at exactly the same time. Very impressive.

To add NBC to the M109 would require a lot of re-engineering. The replacement Vehicles they got tossed out all had the NBC protection. It's not just a question of adding an overpressure filtration system oh, it requires that the vehicle be sealed and that would start at the doors and turret ring. And then move out from there. I was a kid when the M109 was introduced and I'm 60 years old now. My dad was an ordinance specialist at the end of his army career. He got to ride around in the first M 60s and the first m109s. You also got to experience the hardships and violence of World War II and Korea. He hung his helmet up for the last time in 1966.

The reason why the competitors have a greater potential range is that they use a longer 52 caliber barrel instead of the Paladin's 39 caliber gun. They can all use the same ammunition (it's standardized), so when you see two 155 mm guns with the same barrel length but different ranges, you know that the manufacturer is trying to squeeze in a few extra kilometers by sneaky reporting (typically by reporting the range for base bleed or rocket assisted projectiles instead of the standard potato) to make it appear like they have an edge over a competitor. A 52 caliber gun is 52 caliber gun. The internal ballistics do not differ to any meaningful degree and the projectile does not give a flying fuck what brand of vehicle the gun is attached to. Long story short, those range differences don't actually exist.

just couple of days ago the US government announced the sales of 40 M109A6 SPH and support vehicles to Taiwan. Although no Excalibur artillery rounds were included in the FMS package, it does includes the Precision Guidance Kits (PGK) made by the ATK company, which can transform ordinary 155mm artillery shells into precision strike weapons, almost as accurate as the Excalibur and way less expensive.

I was a Driver on an M109A6 Paladin crew from 1999-2004, and I noticed you mixed some data from the A6 with the A5. We had a crew of 4, not 6: Commander who worked the Fire Control Computer, aimed the gun, and supervised the Howitzer Section. Gunner who assisted the Loader and double-checked everything but also aimed the gun using the Panoramic Periscope when the Computer was not used. Loader who loaded and fired the gun on command. The Driver who was basically the Engineer of the section, keeping the vehicle running as Hydraulics were used for automatic traverse and elevation as well as automatic Laying of the gun. The Howitzer Section's Ammunition Team Chief directed the other 2-5 Artillerymen carried on the M992 'CAT' that carried 90 rounds of separate-loading ammunition in additional to the gun's 39 rounds. When required they would drive the CAT from the perimeter up to the Howitzer, dismount, and pass by hand ammunition through a single hatch in the rear lower hull (the two-piece turret doors on the A5 were replaced on the A6 by a large bustle for the powder charges).

We still had the M109A2 (even A3) through most of the 1990s in the regular US Army; Ft Sill, OK. They were supposed to switch us over to early version Paladins in the very beginning 1990s, but... Well first had to wait while they thought about the Crusader and the NLOS cannon. But in the very late 1990s our units finally started getting the slightly better gunned A6. The A7 would still be the normal M109 chassis, but with the Bradley's engine/transmission pack, transfer drive, and final drives. Which is awesome, considering I spent my time in a 1968 chassis M109A3 that needed some love with a hammer to get that stupid thing to turn over. Manual loading can be done on a nearly dead M109. Throw the tracks, pull the pack, no worries, we'll still shoot with that pig. Have actually done it that way, not getting out of the field until every round has been fired.

During my first tour in Iraq we had two Paladins at our FOB. They would always be moving around the FOB so the enemy couldn't target them with mortor fire. The FOB was pretty much square shaped and had a large wall around it. The Paladins would travel along the outside of the wall mostly. My tent was directly against the wall and one late night one of the Paladins must have parked right on the other side of the wall where I slept. I was dead asleep when it started firing and I almost shit myself when that first round went off! I wasn't sure if a mortor had landed and went off beside me or if it was the Paladin's firing. But after I realized what had happened, I went over to them and cused them the hell out!

The new rounds being produced because of the to close for comfort, will be almost 70 miles. As the turret mechanic on them, there's more under the hood. But thats all equipment.

I was on one of these guns for 3 years before going to a 777. My unit also was involved in the PIM for the M109A7. We always wondered why they never incorporate auto rammers in these guns but it all boils down to these vehicles already being cramped and it also means one less component that can fail and break. And CAT also stands for Chow, Ammo, and Trash.

Think he was referring to keeping costs down. EI it's cheaper to upgrade your current stock vs buying a whole new fleet of them + spare parts + ammo.

One of the biggest problems in any large military is logistics. How many different types of engines, transmission, drive sprockets, tracks, so and so and so. If we (USA) can look at one system ,the M270 MLRS. It shares a lot of major components with the M2/M3 Bradley. Why not look at what all systems you can mount on M270 chassis. Think about M109 turret mounted on that chassis.Bring back something like M548 type vehicle (ammo transporter), M577(command vehicle), maybe even M578 (recovery vehicle). Once you take off the rocket system. It's a flat bed cabover track truck. You could put anything on it. Thing about a unit that has all track vehicles using same major components. You could increase or decrease the length. You now have 5-6 different type of vehicles that share almost all the same major components. Decreasing amount of repair parts, decreasing maintenance down time. Witch will increase its presence on the battle field. But I'm just think out loud.

Good vid. The A7 that is now starting to be fielded is NOT on a Bradley chasis. It is common do describe in that way, but it really is different. Many common parts though. I do really like your description of the vehicle and capabilities. You are very thorough and your information flows well

I watched a video a few years ago, on cable here in the US, about an upgraded 109 Paladin with an auto-loading system that was computer fire controlled. What I found amazing about it was it could put 5 rounds on the same target and all the rounds hitting at the same time. It was as you say, an amazing bit of kit...lol But it could have been an artillery piece, I have watched so many videos..

I was on the M109A6... That being said... ROUND HE, FUZE PD, CHARGE 3 LIMA READY TO BE VERIFIED! PERMISSION TO PRIME?! PRIME! PERMISSION TO HOOK UP?! HOOK UP! NUMBER ONE STANDBY, NUMBER ONE FIRE!!! BOOM! One thing you got wrong, The spades are dropped when firing high powder charges not heavy rounds, Not sure why they are using the long lanyard in some of these shots but probably because of high powder charges which will fill the cabin with toxic smoke but we usually keep the hatches open to vent... Also the M109A6's I worked in DID have NBC gear, They even had hoses to hook up to your MOPP suite to give you a little bit of ventilation... Maybe I'm misremembering it's been years...

At 3:30 the gunner pushes the breach handle forward because the witness marks aren’t aligned. This vehicle is amazing but that only when it works properly. I’ve had to break track on this thing a dozen times and have had to fix the timing system on the breach multiple times. It’s a real POS but keep great maintenance on it and it’ll take care of you.
