Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle (Boxer CRV) proposed by Rheinmetall to meet the Australian Army’s Mounted Combat Reconnaissance Capability requirement under Phase 2 of Land 400 is the effective integration of two military-off-the-shelf systems: the Boxer 8x8 wheeled armoured vehicle and the Lance two-man 30mm turret.
Hope you enjoy!

Range is a really big issue for Australian kit, people who haven't been up north frequently have trouble understanding some of the distances up there. Boxer CRV looks like a good option, all I ask is that defence procurement leave it the F alone, don't try to improve it, jacking up the cost and compromising capability to get changes that are more about people marking their beauracratic territory than operational need.

Politenessman they will do the land125 all over again. they will take the 2nd hand yank strikers rather then buying somthing new. I'm still in shock they got the Gwagons rather the 2nd hand humvees. I'm not jaded at all im just pissed we got the m777's rather then Self propelled.

re the m777s I agree, but you can make an argument that since we only have 57 tanks (and last time I looked most of those are in storage), buying SP guns to support an armoured battlegroup we can't field is over the top.

Well as far as i know it is a requirement from the australien army that the Boxer for the australien army gets build there. Where I work we built the first i belive 6 test vehicles that were sent to australia to be tested. I worked a bit on it, since we had trouble building them in time with that litle amount of people that were planned to work on it so they asked for some trainee. I can say it is a great vehicle an fun to work on

Just saw a pair of boxers being transported the other day, I was truly blown away at how big they were. I initially thought they were LAV's, but quickly realised everything was just bigger. The wheels were bigger, the vehicle was taller, it hung out from the sides of the wide trailer. It wasn't until I saw the 30mm cannon, then I realised it was a boxer and got to enjoy a little moment gawking at it as I overtook the truck.

Boxer is huge, is that new gen of giant 8x8 vehicles. And the Australian Boxers especially are more like light Tanks on wheels. Theyre apparently 40 ton heavy; means theyre close to the weight of russian MBTs and same as the heaviest IFVs. Theres been some rumors they actually struggle a bit with the heavy weight (feature creep?), but theres not anything official. I hope it works out smoothly enough.

Thanks for this one. Great review. Just a little note. The computer model drawing shown at 10:58 is the Boxer for Lithuanian Land Force with a Samson Mk II 30mm gun and Spike-LR AT missiles which is officially an IFV. It's a done order and we'll be getting 88 of those with deliveries starting this year. There was a lot of fuss (and competition) in Lithuania over this procurement (remember we're a tiny country and half a billion USD for some hardware is a great deal of cash for us). But from the very beginning the Boxer was unofficially considered to be the best vehicle out there even if not the cheapest. My only regret is that we didn't go for the Lance turret. But I guess you can't have it all. Even with Samson Mk II it's going to be one hell of a machine. There is absolutely no way Australia could go wrong with this one.

Being such a large country we desperately need long range rapid deployment vehicles. Tracked vehicles are vital for all terrain mobility but logistical support to cover long range missions need to be considered. I love this "Boxer" as a 8×8 class leader.👍

Cool video - as always :D I saw a couple Boxer last year. I live relatively near to some Bundeswehr proving/maneuver grounds at the Polish border. Always go to pick mushrooms right outside said fields (in the 90s maybe even inside but that is a little too stupid and potentially expensive for my customs). Right before I get there I pass this road through the forest (around "Cottbus" there is nothing but forest!) and on the right hand there is a tank road (they build it in the 90s since the tanks always crushed the road but the GDR didn't care at all - their roads were shit anyways) made of sand. A group of Boxers was there. And they crossed the road at a tank intersection (laid with heavy cobblestones) while I had to wait at a red light. They are so impressive! This video can't even show a third of their glory. They look nice here and all. But in reality they are *so huge!* And they look very futuristic. Kraut space magic futuristic! What I actually liked the most was that there were no real notable blue/black fumes coming out of the vehicle. Older tanks and IFVs and even the Leo2 could fit in a painting from the 19th century but the Boxer? Comparable to a brand new inner city bus in fumes and also fume smell. For military equipment we speak about a very very clean and efficient engine here!

fascinating to see how modularity has really been taken to heart, and that only makes sense. If you can crank out one basic platform over and over again and then just plug-and play what you need when you need it for whatever role you wanted covered then you're on to a winner.

nice to hear your comments about the pro/cons of tracks/wheels. One other comment on 'Wheels' for a recon vehicle is that if the enemy finds the 'foot prints' in the mud they may think it was a farm vehicle. If they see 'tracks' I don't think they would be saying to themselves 'probably just some guy out for an afternoon drive in his dosser'.

This is the absolute best idea I've seen, because the drop-in modules mean that a military can have several spare vehicles in reserve, and the range, mobility, and armament make it an ideal infantry delivery and support vehicle.

All I can say is that when I was in Armoured Recon we had the M113A1 ..... I think the Boxer is a bit of an improvement :) I completely agree that the 30mm armament is a necessary choice for the Australian Recon role. The video talks about not getting engaged in any combat as a recon unit, but the function of an armoured recon unit in the Australian Defence Force often involves engaging the enemy for a whole range of reasons. Most people that know of armoured recon seem to think the objective is to sneak around behind enemy lines avoiding contact. While this is a big part of it, there are many circumstances where a unit will intentionally engage an enemy. Even if it's just to piss them off a bit :) When that happens a 30mm bit of kit would be very handy.

Trying to find some weaknesses in the system, and it difficult to find any. However, the Reconnaissance / Fire Support version looks to be vulnerable to dismounted infantry, yet the pure battle taxi model looks to be the best. Either way, I am impressed by the multi modular design. All in all, it is a system which has set new standards in APC design.

One of the biggest weaknesses of the Boxer, as will all full sized german armored vehicles, is the sheer size. Just like the Puma, this thing is taller than the Leo2. And Leo is already pretty tall a tank. Funnily enough, Germany is also operating the super tiny Wiesel and is developing the equally tiny LuWa to replace it. Fennek is also not very big. So somehow, Germany seems to be building some of the smallest and some of the biggest armored vehicles. Very little in between. If you compare it with soviet and post-soviet designs, they all seem very low profile in comparison. I guess thaf will be direly needed if they ever have to go up against Boxer or Puma (or Lynx). PS: I have always been in !ove with the Wiesel and LuWa looks almost as cute.
@zhufortheimpaler4041
@zhufortheimpaler4041 Жыл бұрын
@@tomitiustritus6672 the height is due to the heavy IED blast protection. A Boxer can survive IED blasts, most tracked armored vehicles like Abrams, Challenger 2 or basicly every IFV would be left in shreds afterwards.

Update for you... The Australian Army has just taken delivery of the first two of 212 on order. This vehicle is highly impressive, but you don't mention it's amphibious capability- the ASLAAV that it is replacing in the CRV role is capable of 8kts for around 25nm in Sea State 2. You are right about the 30mm main gun, far superior to the ASLAAV's 25mm gun. Would love to see you present the Phase 3 IFV variant, this will be a Tracked version with a Redback 40mm turret (an Aussie weapon that was sold to the yanks, you got to check that out- the future of weapons). My personal opinion of this system is - it's the Army's version of MEKO. Glad we bought them. Ja Worsley ODIN Media.

Boxer CRV ticks a lot of boxes for Aussie army. Only issue is whether they can afford it. 8x8 strategic mobility suits Aussie environment - units may well have to transit to combat zone via road. Amphibious capability less important for CRV role. Very very impressed with this vehicle's capabilities; modularity allows easy upgrading as well when new tech or newer components come out. Whole vehicle doesn't need to be sidelined. That's a big plus for a small army. Thx again for video.

I really like your analysis, Matsimus. Perhaps you could also review the vehicles the Australian army uses for IFV's and APC's? I'm familiar with Australian army M113's. Back in the day, ours were even better than the US variant - we had turrets with .50 cal and co-ax .30 cal where US models only had gun-shields. Just a few of those vehicles made a huge difference to the outcome of battles like Long Tan. I left the service not long after we'd adopted the LAV-25 for reconnaissance duty. How does the old LAV compare to the new Boxer CRV?

Here in OZ we hate it so much, we are looking at the tracked Lynx at the same time. The commonality is what is imperative. The smarts are in building them here, so the supply chain will be local. An infantry fighting vehicle is just the start, the beauty of these systems are their modules, to change out their mission roles which can be changed out in 35 mins. This gives you the luxury of having x amount of base units and mission expansion role on short notice. The best part of all is there a fully automated 155mm howitzer that can be bolted on as well with the overall weight of 46 tons.

well that why Australia designed the first and most practical MRAP the Bushmaster our soldiers were protected while everyone else was dying in land rovers and humvees. it took the US so long to get MRAP's and when the Dutch saw their troops getting killed in the middle east they bought our Bushmaters over any other MRAP

Interesting to see how active defense systems will reduce the need for heavy armor and make IFV even more capable. The speed, range and lighter weight of wheeled vehicles are really important when it comes to the logistics of getting it in theater and then supporting once there.

The US Marines and US Army should adopt this vehicle for recon needs because sharing production and usage with the Germans, the Dutch and the Australians would gain maximum performance and protection for our troops along with the advantages of commonality with NATO and SEATO allies at a low cost. as a combat or reconnaissance vehicle it is excellent, but as transport to the battlefield and support for infantry it's redundant, another story is service and general maintainability, especially in combat conditions, as there are so many progressive solutions and advanced stuffing , it's still an armored personnel carrier - not fighter jet ... , and of course not unimportant question - price .

the modular nature of the boxer seems like a fancy gimick that will almost never be used. it's almost like a guy with an AR-15 bragging how he can carry 2 uppers and switch between cqb and long range when he wants to, yet when you ask him how often that happens, he falls curiously silent.

Remember this machine is built for war. If it drives over IED and drive module is damaged you can put mission module on working drive module from any nation or vice versa. Second thing it allow for fast prototyping and already there are many variants of mission modules
@MrBandholm
@MrBandholm 7 жыл бұрын
Modular setups are the future... It may look like a gimick, however the result of the setup turns out to be of real benefit. It is most effective on ships, due to the larger size, and longer life, but the principles are the same... The real effect, if done right, means that a weapon system, sensor pack and so on, can be upgraded or maintained/repaired much more cost-effective and faster, than a conventional setup... How effective is it on a vehicle this size, I don't know... But I do know that the Danish navy has build its ships up around the concept, making the ships much more flexible, and cheaper in their expected life cost, because the instead of going to dock and cut a hole in the hull to access the hardware inside (meaning an upgrade will only happen once), container moduls can be pulled out and replaced in as short a time as 15 minuts... So if a sensor package is damaged or something, the container modul can simply just be unplugged, pulled out, and replaced with one that works, and the damaged sensors can be worked on while the unit is out in the field/sea.

Yes +MatoVuc, as previous speakers said, you are not thinking this through. Ofc no soldier in the field is going to swap his nice m4 in a cqb 'build' into a dmr variant while sitting in his one man hole in the night. That's not what his all is about however. It is about logistics, cost effectiveness and versatility. A more practical example might be able to make it more clear. Just think on it on divisonal level for a second. Let's say you have a mechanized division equipped with boxer based vehicles. You have a mortar battalion using the 120mm mortar turret and a reconaissance battalion using this crv turrent. Then you have your infantry using boxers for transport and a medical battalion using boxers in the field ambulance configuration. Isn't the advantage of having just one vehicle for all this tasks already obvious? Not only that you don't need to worry about all sorts of different spares parts for all the different vehicles anymore as you just have one vehicle. You also can easily exchange vehicles between your units in relative short time simply by exchanging equipment modules. Especially after a division has been in battle for some time and after suffering quite some casualties you now have the opportunity to concentrate on these kind of boxers you need the most in a certain situation. That's a huge advantage. Modularity is not a new invention however. Just look at all the different sdkfz/251 variants in WW2. Actually interchangeability always had a major influence in German military development not only when it comes to vehicle development. One can almost consider this a doctrine. It's one reason why the German Army didn't use a heavy machine-gun caliber like the .50. They simply didn't want to think about a lot of different calibers but instead only have one rifle caliber and a pistol caliber. The German 8mm Mauser has been used in sniper rifles, standard infantry rifles, light to heavy machine guns and even in the air-defence on bombers and on the ground in twin mounted mg42's. Up to the stg.44 there simply was no other rifle caliber in the German Military. You can also look at the large family of vehicles based on the chassis of a Leopard 1 and 2 nowadays. Modularity isn't something the Germans invented however. I just thought it's a good example.

rantanplan178 having operated in a unit based on variants of the Patria AMV, i am aware of the benefits and drawbacks of running with a family of vehicles. my point is that i don't exactly see much use for the swappable module system as it will require at the least a crane to swap out and it doesn't seem like something you'd do very often while deployed. at most, i see it as a production and cost saving measure, but as a practical ability in the field, not so much.
