Matt finally puts up and buys a Porsche! This 1987 Carrera is a whale-tail narrow-body coupe with A/C and a Sunroof in Cassis Red over Red Leather interior. At the time of purchase it has 92,000 miles after two owners. The Cassis Red exterior paint is 100% original except for a few touch up spots on the lower front valence and hood.
The plans for this car include a full transformation into a Keen Project Safari build - learn more about the Keen Project Safari 911's here!

I agree. There are a finite number of 3.2L/G50 911 cars out there. Remember that the build numbers for this model were extremely low compared with later 911. Sure he is only drilling a couple of holes... That’s not the point. He’s building a car to lift and prep for off-road use. Take a fantastic/rare chassis and beat the shit out of it to the point where later it will be cost prohibitive to re-tighten to the spec that this beautiful 911 enjoys. Really sad to see the destruction of a special car. There are so many great alternative makes/models that are not as precious or expensive to make into “Safari” car.

@ziomorph

HAHAHA modifying a car almost never increases value, it does the opposite. Especially in this case.
@ziomorph
@ziomorph 6 жыл бұрын
Wow they've put up a car for sale? Thats great, I can put up a Toyota Carolla for 500k as well. Now lets get back to reality and look at real classic cars. Guess which ones fetch higher values. YES! its the ones that don't have their interior swapped, their body panels drilled into, suspension changed, and driven in the "safari" manner. If someone wants, they can do that to a car, but theres a 99.5% chance it will drop in value.
@ziomorph
@ziomorph 6 жыл бұрын
Let's use our brains. We have two cars. Car A is a 1987 911 that has 50,000 miles, and has been turned into a "safari" 911, a transformation that costs $15,000. The last 5,000 of its miles have been rough, and the car's interior, exterior, suspension and various other components have been changed. Car B is also a 1987 911 with 50,000 miles. Its still stock in every sense, and has not suffered from a life of "safari" driving. Which do you think will fetch more? Go look at similar examples in classic cars.
@ziomorph
@ziomorph 6 жыл бұрын
Ok, I will quote your article. "It's for sale at Belgian dealer Iconiccars for €129,900." Now guess what that means. It means its for sale. Doesn't mean its sold. You can put a car up for sale at any value. Doesn't mean that it will sell for that, or is valued at your price. Now clean Turbo 911 with 36,000km will most likely sell for relatively close to that asking amount, but will the "safari" sell for their asking price? If you can find me a 911 Safari that sold for that much, I will "take the L"
@ziomorph
@ziomorph 6 жыл бұрын
Guessing you're some 16 year old whose never sold or bought a car, so you don't understand how asking prices, and real values differ, especially on special cars like this. Good luck in the future kiddo

I watched it. Its neat, I just think taking a really nice example and doing a bunch of stuff to it doesn't seem to be the best idea? Won't that car be worth significantly less as soon as he modifies it and tears it up on gravel roads? Seems like it would be more cost effective to buy one that's already somewhat worked over or something. The car hes got looks kinda perfect as is aside from the color which is subjective. Seems kinda contradictory to have a really mint, off-road vehicle. Of course, Matt can do as he likes so none of what we say matters. Ah, the Internet.

Different preferences. It doesn't have a big V8, which alot of american enthusiasts like, ore a soft suspension, doesn't have the straight line speed, is rather small and doesn't turn just over idle at 60 mph. The 911 is not fitted for most parts of america, since it is a rather sporty momentum car. So it doesn't have the appeal of for example a clean vintage charger...

So you want to doubt, that americans prefer soft suspension? many cars get different suspension setups for the european and us market, Prius for example. Why does VW offer smaller vehicles with the same name in europe (passat) ? Europe get's a smaller car with a newer chassis and harder suspension. Why were the muscle cars never bought outside the US? Europe has smaller roads, medival citties and all of the roads have corners. It's not just my ''opinion'' but common sense. sources: www.autobild.de/artikel/vw-passat-fuer-den-us-markt-1334961.html www.honkforhelp.com/explore/2016/buying-guide-european-vs-american-cars/

Matt, I’ve been following Keen’s work for about 2 years now and every safari build he has put out has been gorgeous. Can’t wait to see this finished and especially what you pick out for the seats. Don’t let all the comments down here get to you, and I hope you have a blast in it once it’s done.

Matt this was a steal. 1987 is the year I'm concentrating my search on specifically for that 3.2 liter as well as the G50 gearbox. And that COLOR. DAMN.

Those are the same Recaro seats from my old '85.5 944. By far the most comfortable seats I've ever experienced. I would drive from Annapolis to SE Kansas, doing 24hrs of driving in 30 hrs, and my lower back never hurt.

Nice job Matt. I bought an 87 944 (less than 38K on the clock) several years back and changed/upgraded the radio, wheels, tires, air intake, stabilizing bars, steering wheel, short throw shifter, and many other mod to make it mine. I kept all the original parts to give to the next owner. Enjoy!

Hey Matt, I think it would be really interesting if you added the price paid for the car and the budget for the upgrades. Could be beneficial to someone else looking to do a similar build.

With a clean condition like that, color is really not a big deal. What is a big deal is a proper investment 911 in excellent condition is going to be hacked up for a safari build. IWould daily drive this and for sure modify it somewhat, but please keep it original IMHO.
