@@incubrian I've really been working with metrone lately and I notice the band started pulling him faster on the guitar solo and he didn't hold them back. So the chorus at the end of the song is definitely faster than the first chorus. Matt Cameron is solid as a rock but also kinda boring as a rock to me. I do love his drumming in soundgarden some real cool stuff he played with them.

Matt Cameron probably plays the song at the exact bpm's the guys in the band ask him to play it. Those things are settled well before the gig, so I think it's not Matt's fault but Eddie/Mike asking.
@tribe8342
@tribe8342 5 жыл бұрын
It's not about the bpm but Matt just doesn't have that 'swing' feel or should I say 'funk' feel where Pearl Jam were big because of that style. It is called 'JAM' for reason though. Now when Matt behind the drum PJ sound like KISS. Like 70's rock band. I'm not saying he's a bad drummer, he just doesn't blend with the band. It's like Larry Carlton with Fourplay. The fans loved Lee Ritenour as so the old PJ fans love Dave A. Dave A can fill what empty space in the PJ song. Just listen to this Even Flow version, it felt stiff and cold not funk as like they played long a go with Dave A.

The “odd” time signature of Soundgarden is partly what made me fall in love with them. They’re so groovy. I have to agree with some of the comments here. When I listen to this guy it's like seeing black and white, great but black and white picture. When I listen to the drumming from the studio recording it's like I'm riding and swaying on the fucking rainbow of groove, dynamics and even the pure sound of the drum parts.

The studio recording nuances/subtleties can't be duplicated live, and it's too slow for a live show. Two choices, play it studio tempo and put people to sleep, or speed it up to add energy and keep people rockin'

Been reading some of the posts around the tempo and thought to weigh in. I've got about 30 years of experience playing drums both in live and studio gigs and experienced both sides of the situation. Sometimes a band will opt to play a song faster simply because it sounds (and feels) better in a live situation than at the original tempo is was recorded. We've also slowed songs down when played live to get a heavier feel as opposed to the original recorded tempo. I fully agree that "in the heat of the moment", tempos can and do get pushed (I'm certainly guilty of this in my gigs at times) but Matt is a seasoned pro; this is no doubt a conscious effort on the band's part to push the tempo. It's actually nice to see they have the freedom to do this since they aren't locked into a click track or sequencer for this song and just playing "live"! It's a good discussion though!

He doesn't display very technically difficult playing in Soundgarden, but there's a feel that I've found in it that really stands out to me. For instance, I heard a Temple of the Dog song way back (like, I didn't even pay attention to band names then, let alone know bandmates by their names), and something about the drumming really stood out. Another time, I hear some songs from Pearl Jam's Riot Act, and I got the same feeling, but had no idea it was the same drummer. Then I played Spoonman on Rock Band, and I was sold. That and Pretty Noose were the most fun tracks to play in all the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games i played.

ILikeWafflz it's his timing that makes his drumming unique. He makes odd time sound like straight time and uses odd time in his own drumming in actual straight time songs in many instances. He's not the absolute greatest of all time, but he's A LOT better than a lot of the PJ fans give him credit for. I will admit his groove a lot different than the groove in PJ songs which is probably why people talk shit on him but it's a talented groove Also, the jam part of Reach Down by Temple of the Dog has some awesome drumming.

I'm a full time drummer and I'm not crazy about Matt on this song. But he is a way better and far more accomplished drummer than Dave Abbruzzese. I think it's just the fact that he completely changed the style of this song with his drumming, and I personally don't like it. The chorus sounds weird when Eddie tries to sing it so fast. But Cameron is a sick drummer nonetheless. Anyone who's listened to a soundgarden record would know that.

I think the drummer and the vocalist has the hardest job in the band, in my own opinion. Not saying Jeff awesome bass and Stone awesome guitarist and Mike McCready 🎸 totally incredible and of Boom's awesome B3 piano playing!! I truly love and appreciate all bands members. Yes I agree drummers are my favourite band members and for me always the coolest haha but you're right this is hard job. Drummer always hiding in the back but if he make mistake everybody will see and hear. Drummers btw are real athletes playing for 3 hrs this is good workout. Sorry if I make mistakes not my first language 😅

Underrated by who? The body who arguably rates drummers recognizes this man as one of the best. Album sales and concert attendance makes your comment absurd. Your comment is so cliché that it appears beneath almost every music video on KZfaq. Maybe we should rate the morons who parrot your comment. You are one of a million dipshits. Congratulations!
