He was a marvelous player ! One of the best I've ever seen in my life . I really can't understand how England left him out of World Cups . These coaches don't know nothing about football . Best regards from Brazil .

He could have a goal of decade competition all to himself, and he did it all in poor side, a true legend of south coast football,

And he was so down-to-earth too. I asked him about this goal on twitter a few months ago as the French guy at Newcastle, Albert, had lobbed Schmeichel the week before and I asked "did you see that and think "I'll have a pop if I get the chance?"" he replied soon after and said "Yup :D" genius.

Have you lot heard the story, that after this game Giggs, kept trying to lob Schmeichel in training shouting, " LE TISSIER," as he did! Schmeichel then chased him around the pitch!

one of the most technically gifted englishmen with a football... that's why he won all of 8 caps. paul scholes, retires from international football at 29, joe cole - forever condemned to the wing... jack wilshere not being allowed over the half way line. and endless cycle of wasted talent for the sake of power and 'passion' shame

LeTissier was a reason to watch football. His goals were masterpieces. He really proved that a ball can go through a defender's body.Nothing was impossible for LeTiss, and he was outrageously underrated. I'm not a Saints' fan, but I appreciate masters of football.

Wasted his career? He is known by Saints fans as the best player to ever play for the club and proved he wasn't money driven like a lot of players. He was loyal and was one of the best at his time. Have a look on KZfaq for some clips on him and then tell me what you think

It seems like so long ago I was sat in that stand behind the goal with my father and my brother! We always used to hang on in the Premiership by the skin of our teeth! 6-3 and 4-1 scores against Manchester United. '"I'll tell you who I used to love watching", says Xavi Barcelona's prodigious midfielder "Matt Le Tissier. He played for Southampton as small club with a small stadium. But he would never leave. He wasn't like a typical English player and he would have done well in Spain. He had offers all the time to leave but he stayed where his heart is.

@118chris118 Thats a great comment Chris.I was born and bred in Southampton but When I was younger I followed Liverpool. As I got older I thought to myself Im no glory hunter and should actually be standing by my own team so I turned my support to Southampton. Then came Le Tiss. Such a naturlly gifted player and one that stayed loyal to play for his beloved Saints. Le God the legend. Respect to you Chris and Rangers FC PS We will be back in the premiership in the next 2 seasons watch this space

Widely considered as one of the best players to have played in the premiership. He was consistently nominated for goal of the season. As a Chelsea fan I can't think of one Pompey player that comes close. I can think of several that played for Southampton, Shearer included. Regardless of who you support you should be able to see as a football fan (unless you are too blind to see further than your dick size) that Le Tissier was an incredible talent

@calumstarkey Thanks for the headsup......what you say makes a lot of sense. From watching Le Tissier play for England the few times I did, he never really seemed too comfortable. I sometimes think some players, maybe Matt, play their best when there're the 'go to' guy.....I know I played on stacked teams but never really hit my stride until I was 'the' guy. The coach's philosophy can make an impact too....good or bad.
@RockandRollMusic0012 жыл бұрын
@Cockel100 - He's right though. We are not good enough because we don't select our best players (and when we do we neverplay them where they play best).The reason we never win anything is that we pick guys like Heskey (who is a reasonably talented workmanlike player) ahead of guys like Le Tissier (who is a brilliant game turning freak of nature). It's happened time and time again over the years and it's very frustrating.

@adelaidejetboy I'm inclined to agree, and while I'm not saying American players are on par with England's (because were' not), but we do the same thing here. We don't give caps to the players that can game-changing things and keep trying to get gold from gravy with players that can't.
@rc286913 жыл бұрын
@pocketofgoodness As a Villa fan he was the bane of our lives and The Only player ever to make Paul McGrath look average twice. The ones who made McGrath look average once can be counted on one hand. LeTissier was a favourite of mine and all thinking fans, not the Sky/London Media elite who seemed to dislike him because he had a brain, was a one club man and wasn't bezaddled by London's bright lights. If Venables had half a brain he could have built a winning England team around him.
@benw56711 жыл бұрын
His work rate wasn't high enough... I think that was the main problem! Would have been ridiculous though had we given him more chances seeing as he apparently doesn't need to work hard to score the most ridiculously good goals!

@calumstarkey Could never understand why he never really got a good chance to play for England. I heard it was the coach who didn't like his floating but considering the lack of pure strikers, Lineker aside, you would have thought his place on the squad secure. He sent me a rosette and an autograph pic after I mentionned how outstanding I though he was to a visiting friend of his so I sent him a Hockey shirt of my home team......wonder if he ever got it.
