Matt Willis, the musician and singer known for co-founding Busted, joins the podcast to speak about the true impact of addiction. We discuss why addiction is such a taboo subject, how to approach difficult conversations with your loved ones and the journey to recovery. Matt shares the struggles he faced in his youth and how they spiralled into addiction. After Busted split up when he was only 21, he felt his life lacked direction and purpose. He discusses how he found his purpose again and how crucial his family are.
In this episode, Matt shares his thoughts on shame, fault vs. responsibility, challenging yourself and much more. This is an emotional and moving conversation about hope and empathy.

Addiction can happen to anyone so never judge. I was in addiction for years now I'm over 4 years clean and sober though every days a battle. I don't get complacent because I know the outcome if I do it would be like a car crash. The only advice I could pass on through my experience is get help and take one day at a time. God bless 🙌

Best one yet. So open, introspective and honest. Makes me question a lot of my own behaviour past and present. Thank you for this.

Mat!!! Thanks you so much for your words. I have an interesting story that im not going to get into but my life started in an extraordinarily low place and somehow i was able to manage my way out if it and right when i thought i made it, i got into drugs. I had multiple businesses and ruined it all. Im still struggling with addiction actively and somehow im working my way back up. Ahhh i wish i could get sober

Such a great interview. Matt has done so much for reducing the stigma around addiction. His honesty and openness is admirable. I hope his recovery continues forever and he can continue to use his voice to help others. When he was talking about happy childhood memories that he couldn’t remember, was that a result of drug alcohol abuse? I didn’t quite get the reason

Has he? Apart from a short documentary and a couple of podcasts, he’s not even spoken about it much. I’ve never once heard him speak rawly or graphically about addiction or even mention what he was even addicted to . There are hundreds of others who have actually helped reduce the stigma. Talking about how they would pawn their kid’s ipad for money to get another bag of heroin, would throw up over themselves etc. Also explaining the causes such as being violently and sexually abused during childhood. Matt doing the odd podcast barely touching on the subject isn’t really “using his voice”. The way he skips around answering questions, not giving any personal information and avoiding talking about his trauma or addiction really shows he’s not the person to advocate for addicts or people who suffer from being stigmatised. I think he has too much pride for that. To answer your question, it’s very common for people to ‘forget’ their childhoods due to trauma because it’s too painful to dig up the past. The memories are often there if they want to remember though.

Honesty does not help his children who have to be around when he falls off the wagon and his wife Emma, why do women put up with it ? Let him face his demons on his own.
@snipersimon

you dont know the situation, its probable that matt was never drunk around his kids, or managed around his kids. id have thought that if he was ever a risk around his own kids, that Emma would have stepped in and took it further. This man suffered all his life, dont judge him until you see what he went through. It's easy for us all the judge someone when we dont have the same issues. Im sure theres something in your life that if someone took away you would realise how addicted you are. Without Emma, i highly doubt Matt would be here today, nor would busted, and the joy he brings to many. Matt is a fucking hero for talking loudly about this and showing people theres light.
