Who are the Molokans? The Russian Religious Christian Sect exiled to Azerbaijan from Central European Russia in the 1800’s. This group of people don’t have photos in their homes, don’t watch TV, don’t drink alcohol or eat pork. They set up home in the village of Ivanovka in the centre of Azerbaijan. A place where they were free to practice their own religion and live in peace.
These ethnic Russians were banished here during the Russian Empire period by Tsar Katherine the great for their different religious beliefs and in the hope to cause them issues from the local Azeri muslim population. However, this wasn’t the case and the Russian population were welcomed in to Azerbaijan and have stayed here ever since, throughout both the Soviet Union period and the period of modern Azerbaijan.
Nowadays, there are generations of Molokans who speak Russian, are ethnically Russian but have no association with the modern country. We travelled to Ivanovka to explore and fond out more about this unique Christian sect, their traditions and how they live in 2022 & modern Azerbaijan more generally 🇦🇿🇷🇺

I loved this place. I'm a 57 year old American citizen. I remember the preinternet days. NO cell phones. I miss those days. I have been following Azerbaijan type of videos on KZfaq because I relish the simpler times. I was born in Argentina so I'm talking RURAL memories. Thank you for sharing this with us, stay safe.

What a story to tell guys. This is what distinguishes you from other KZfaqrs. Harriet and I never miss a vlog. You guys just get better and better. We knew nothing about Molokans. So friendly they are to extend their home to you. They don't watch their lives on TV. They live it every day without distraction. Love You Matt and Julia💖💖💖 Harriet, Jim and Yuki. Richmond, Va.

I am no longer a practicing Molokan and have not been since childhood, but I am always deeply interested about where the Molokans got to after their exile. There are thousands here in my home of Australia, and tens of thousands within America (predominantly along the West Coast). There was also a settlement in Mexico which has very little remaining traces albeit a few families as well as a beautiful museum that I would very much like to visit someday. Apparently, I am alive today due to a great great grandfather jumping off a train after being forcibly conscripted to a war that they likely would not have survived. Although I am no longer practicing, the legacy of my people is still very important to me and there may come a day where my child will want to know of our heritage and story. Thanks for the video :)

I live in Oregon, where there are a few hundred Molokans. I and my wife made a break with the Molokan church when we aligned ourselves with a Christian fellowship based in Norway. I could not have made such a move without my upbringing as a Molokan, of which I am deeply grateful. I also am still very interested in Molokan subjects -- history, traditions, personalities, worship, beliefs, etc.

The Molokans are much like some of the groups here in Canada, no "churches", icons, hierarchy, and simple lives without any of the other "conveniences" . They're obviously keeping the traditional lives of their ancestors. There are collective farms here too, but gov't regulations mean the titles are registered. Interesting combination of cultures, religious beliefs, and practices among so many diverse people. Thank you for the window into a place where people live in peace amongst each other.

What a village. Quaint and old yet the people were all lovely. I won't lie I was a little scared for you guys at first, but then I understood why the lady said she and her husband would not want to leave. I watch a couple from Azerbaijan and they always bite into something sweet before they sip their tea. Since they never sweeten their teas I assumed that's why they eat something sweet each sip. That's what the chocolate was for...LOL. Wonderful video as always...never miss a single vlog. Stay safe guys. 🤩

I so very much enjoyed this video.. you just keep getting better and better, so proud of you Matt & Julia. I thank you for taking us on these adventures & sharing the various cultures with us. This one really struck me, the woman sharing their beliefs - no pork, no alcohol, no idols, no mysterious symbols just full of the Holy Spirit.. maybe it hit me harder because it aligns with my own studies & what I've learned along the way. So glad you share the Molokans and their life with us. Thank-you!

Matt & Julia, there are numerous Molokan communities throughout California , the city of Kerman located in Fresno County has a well established community . Thanks for an informative and entertaining presentation .

This is true. There is a large molokan population in Southern California as well. My brother married a girl from Fresno, or more likely “Kerman”; however we mostly referred to it as “Fresno”. The Molokan communities in LA/Orange County and the Central Valley are very close knit while at the same time marrying their kids together. Marriage with people who are not Molokan is not allowed

@FoxWolfWorld You speak correctly as many of my ancestors are buried in Kern County. My family immigrated from Russia to the San Francisco and San Bernadino area. My great grandmother is buried at the Molokan Russian Cemetary and my family had to fight to have her son buried next to her. West Sacramento, up here in the North, is predominantly a Russian community. We visit one of the shops at least once a year. I love my heritage. ❤

I wish they went into more detail in what they believe. I can't see how not drinking or eating pork could get them exile by the Orthodox church? As an Orthodox myself who grandmothers family were from ohrid & had Bogomil ancestry it seems inconsistent to me that a group so far in belief from Orthodoxy in Macedonia coexisted with no problems that one which (nothing I can see) ideas aren't incompatible at all would be exiled?

Hi Matt and Julia 👋. What an informative, eye opening and enjoyable video. I have read of different groups that moved to the "outlying" regions of the Empire during Catherine the Great's reign but didn't know anything of the Molokans. I am fascinated with their beliefs and find them quite appealing to Christians such as myself who yearn for "getting back to the basics" of faith and away from the "trappings" of the ritualized practices and infrastructure of "the church". Just observing how so many different faiths get along peacefully (as Matt pointed out) seems to give weight to their "practicing what they preach". Thanks, guys for your ability to get people to happily open up to both of you and share their thoughts and experiences. Take care, stay well and safe. Have a pleasant and rewarding week. 👍🫂❤️🙏🌎

This was really interesting. Molokans as you describe them seem to be a sort of Russian Amish people, or perhaps more like the non conformists that broke off from the Anglican church in the UK around the time of the reformation. And they have erected a statue to Martin Fry. Nice The Quakers don't use a church in the traditional sence either, but meet together without a 'preacher'. This was really interesting. Thanks.

A wonderful vlog, giving us an insight in a group of people that I’m sure, most would of never heard of before, and what a lovely group of people they seem, and to see all communities living side by side and getting on together, can only teach us all something, the guest house owner seemed really nice, and the older generations you spoke to, were very open and honest about their way of life, looked like you both enjoyed your time there, anyway, as usual, enjoy and have fun on your travels, oh and getting a slab of chocolate with your cups of tea, I’m with Julia on this one, I’m moving there too lol

Super interesting video guys you excel in this region of the world. it's a shame more people seem to watch rubbish generic copycat content than actual real stuff like this but that's youtube for you. Also curious would you both say you are Christian or,

Thank you mate! 🙏🏼 For sure, social media is a fickle place! How’s Armenia? Neither of us are religious at all to be honest, nor were we christened, but religion intrigues us and certainly how people of different faiths live among one another, you?

@@MattandJulia Armenia is incredible we understand why you love the caucasus we've never seen this level of hospitality and invites to everything. I though Julia would have been Christian with her background, we are Christian yeah. Keep doing stuff like this anyway it's great :)

There is also a sizable community of Molokans (and Old Believers) in, of all places, the state of Oregon in the US.

@@MattandJuliathere are a lot of molokans in the LA metropolitan area. Mainly Orange County. I am one of them. I grew up here. Much of the traditions you experienced in Azerbaijan are still the same here.

My father's family were Molokans here in Los Angeles. My grandfather came here from a Molokan community in Kars, Turkey and my grandmother's family came from a group that settled in Baja California Mexico. Later moving to Boyle Heights Los Angeles.
