Hey guys, in today's video I'm going to be showing you how to set up cloth simulation in Unreal Engine 5. This works for simulating anything you want, from clothing to flags, this does it all. In this video I will also show you how to set up wind to be used in your flag simulation too.

I love this channel, haven't watched enough of your content! Have you made a video on general soft body/flex body physics? Like how you'd simulate rope laying on the ground etc. I've been digging and haven't found a good UE5 video on it yet

That's so bizarre I have a flag with the union jack as well in Unreal Engine, the flag works and blows in the wind, when using the Wind Directional source. Yes, I'm British as well

Great tutorial thanks! I had issues importing it and it creating a Physics asset. Worked out that you cant use image as planes in blender.

It can't create a physical asset : The bone size is too small to create Physics Asset 'Foodstand_Flag_PhysicsAsset' from Skeletal Mesh 'Foodstand_Flag'. You will have to create physics asset manually. I guess it has something to do with blender export. but I don't understand how to solve this. So it does work with the wind, but I can't interat with it.

Can we bind it like we have 2 flag but wind direction should affect only one and for second flag we can use another wind direction with less speed or strength!

Hi thanks for the tutorial it works great. , is it possible to attach a wind direction component to a blueprint? I want the sails of my ship to only blow in the direction I'm travelling. or maybe is there a better way to do this than with the wind?

great video - thank you! 🫡🇬🇧 i had the same issue with 100 not being high enough for the Paint Value - and causing glitches - but that was fixed when i set both the Brush Strength and Falloff to 1.

Thank you for the awesome video Matt. I noticed that both your flags are moving in sync with each other. Do you know of an easy way to offset the wind or cloth solver so they move randomly and not the same? I've got a line of flags all flapping and moving in the exact same way. Not very realistic.

Hey Matt i`m using this clothing system for my Character`s hair in my game. But it clips through the body, maybe you could make a video on doing basic hair physics using cloth simulation!

Great as always, Matt. Question, is there a way to have collision? When there was no wind your flags just fell through your pole. But I could see a million uses if this was able to drape over things and not pass through.

Great point! This somehow slipped my mind when creating this video as I didn't really notice it. The below link should hopefully help out and explains it pretty well with pictures. Just a note that your cloth must be exactly 1 vertex deep along one axis (so your material must be 2-sided). If the cloth is more than perfectly flat (2 or more vertices), it will inflate like a balloon, rather than sag/flap.

I believe you can control that with the pressure settings. I would have to test it to see.

If anyone is still having an issue with ballooning of their mesh, double click the physics asset and move the collision capsule until the mesh behaves the way you want it.

Hey Matt, quick question, how would you add some "weight" to the material? For example, whether that was a flag, or a cape, or anything, its very floaty, is there a way to dampen that down so that it doesn't bounce/flap around so much? Also, collision? I noticed your flags wrapped around themselves/went through themselves, is there a way to prevent that? thanks in advance :)

the free Content Examples project in the Samples section of the marketplace has a map for cloth, and in there you can see the different setting for things like silk, rubber and burlap.

Hi, I have created exactly what you do. It works well in simulation, but when I export it, the flag moves 100 times faster. How could I solve this issue? It works normally before export, but the result is totally different after export. It's been a week, but I could not figure out what went wrong.

Hi. I want a solution for my problem. I have a character with pose static mesh import from maya. character had a cape cloth. I export it individual and enable skeletal mesh option. After applying the cloth simulation the cloth cross between body and other stuff.. I want to apply collision but that doesn't work for me.. any solution for this problem?

Thanks for posting this, it was very helpful. How do you record the wind movement in Sequencer? It seems to only work in game mode but when I render the wind doesn't work.

Hello everyone, I'm having a problem in one of the steps of this workflow. See, when I press "activate cloth paint", my mesh turns completely invisible and non-interactive ... if I press "h" I can see it again, but only as long as I keep the key pressed and I cannot do anything else with it... My version of the engine is 5.0.3, and weirdly enough, in 5.1 it seems to work properly. Does anyone have any clue on why this could be happening?

Hi @Matt Aspland, is it possible to make the wind always point towards a certain actor in the scene? Like if I had a black hole that moved around in the scene and I wanted the wind to always go towards it?

@@MattAspland this definitely helps. I just need to check on having multiple wind elements in the scene with an area of effect so that the wind on the opposite side of the black hole would still point towards it.

I don't have the "clothing" option in my window menu. Am I missing something? Edit: Got it, I'm on the skeleton and not on the skeletal mesh. There are two buttons on the top right, with a drawing of a skeleton and another one next to it. The right one should be selected.

When I follow this tutorial and import the FBX from Blender, I get an error saying "bone size is too small to create physics asset". But I don't see you creating any bones? The weird thing is that my flag is over 1m in size and I get the same error message even when I try to create the physics asset manually.

instead of painting with the "Paint Value" to 1000, set that to 0.

following this tute, when I right click and 'create clothing data from selection' and then 'create' it does not appear in the clothing window. I'm working on a dress with a hood. There are no bones in it - just an export from marvelous designer.

@@howtostartaclothingbrandd well, yes and sadly, also no. If I cut away the hood part of the dress then it allowed the cloth painting. However when I attempt to simulate it immediately balloons out into a capsule shape surrounding her. It might be because it’s 100x too big when I add it to the metahuman. I have to scale it to .01 size. So, still experimenting

This month of Epic Free Content has a asset pack called "Dynamic Volumetric Sky" it comes with a day/night cycle which may be what you are looking for

the cloth needs to be one vertex thick... a single poly that's subdivided... then the material is set to "two sided."

I'd avoid it when you don't need it, you can get cheaper performance with either animations *or* what I like for some wavy cloth effects is using the simplegrassshader node and apply that in your material instead. Cheaper. Personally i'd use cloth physics mainly for objects that need high detail, like characters for example with a cape or something.
